ABSTRACTThis research aims at highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of face to face Group Consulting Sessions (GCS) and the online ones, on the basis of learning process and communication. Through  selection of  the relative bibliography, the basic theoretical approaches of  the research topic  and the results of  prior research are presented. The population from which the sample of this research was selected, includes postgraduate students of Hellenic Open University (HOU) attending the “Education Sciences” and “Adult Education” programs. The quantitative and qualitative data were collected through the convenient sampling method and the use of  questionnaires and personal interviews. The data were analyzed through the SPSS statistical software. Subsequently, the interpretation of the research results is presented. More specifically, as far as the effectiveness of the learning process in face to face GCS of HOU is concerned, the higher percentage of the research participants has declared a high degree of satisfaction and the same applies to the electronic GSS of HOU. As far as the effectiveness of communication in face to face GCS of HOU is concerned, the higher percentage of the participants has declared its satisfaction and  declared its preference for “face to face” communication for the creation of interpersonal relations and  cooperation with the teachers and the rest of the students. Furthermore, as far as the quality of communication in GCS of HOU is concerned, participants declared their satisfaction on the one hand but on the other there were contrary views  depending on personal experiences. However, the crucial role of the electronic GCS of HOU was highlighted as far as their use as supportive tools of learning and psychological encouragement  of students complementary to face to face GCS is concerned. Furthermore, the same applies to their use as interconnection tools of HOU, teachers and students with the rest of educational institutions of Greece and abroad for learning issues.

Empathy is an important part of emotional intelligence and the latter is crucial for human relations, whether they be interpersonal relations, relations among people at work, or in a wider community. Therefore, empathy is important for adult education, for guidance counsellors, and for other adult educators. Adult educators must be empathic in order to understand the perspectives and needs of the participants in the educational process and empathy is a precondition for understanding. The development of empathy as a competence is a lifelong learning process. Namely, despite some biological predispositions for empathy, the latter can be learnt. It is the contention of the article that empathy is one of the most important intercultural competencies, because if a person is not empathic, other intercultural competencies vary rarely cannot develop to their full extent. Thus empathy is a precondition for successful intercultural dialogue.

There are many aspects and aspects that can become the standard for the success or failure of an educational process. This aspect is usually present in the teacher as mentor, teacher and also on the side of students. One aspect that can be a barrier to the success of students in absorbing subjects from the teacher is the factor of communication that is not working effectively. Communication is very important considering that the educational process is currently directed into a room filled by teachers and students. In such conditions a two-way communication pattern is required, in order to create optimal interaction in each face-to-face between teachers and students, so that educational goals can be achieved. This paper will discuss the significance of teacher communication and its effect on student interest in learning.

The use of electronic slide presentations (ESP), usually through PowerPoint or Prezi software, has become widespread in higher education and is part of the expectations and perceptions of both teachers and students of how a successful and quality class should be. Is this dissemination of ESP use justified by the pedagogical quality fostered in learning? While its use can help focus attention on the content of the subject during classes, there are also limitations in this process, both in the dimension of teaching, by the teacher, and in the dimension of learning, by the student. This paper seeks to provide a contribution to the debate on this topic, and the advantages and limitations in using ESP. It is concluded that there is a need, on the one hand, to define the use of ESP, by assaying their application, as well as, on the other hand, to simultaneously develop other pedagogical ways of teaching, whose articulation can make the student’s role more active and pertinent, and enable the feedback to the student on the part of the teacher, so that it may be possible to regulate the teaching and learning process in a timely manner.

The sophisticated information and technology (IT) development can be the answer for various problems post the covid-19 pandemic, particularly the teaching and learning challenges. The role of IT that is booming nowadays is online learning. Online learning is obviously different from regular learning. In this mode of learning, the students are required to have the ability to receive and process information. It serves as media that connect teachers and students who are being remote from one another at any time and anyplace. There are various media utilized to perform online learning such as WhatsApp, Google Meet, Zoom, Google Classroom, and other e-learning platforms. Among all these media, though, WhatsApp apparently appointed as the simplest and easiest media to access in all levels of education. Online learning at current is the effective medium to carry on the teaching and learning process in all levels of education. For the effectiveness of online teaching and learning process during the covid-19 pandemic, there have been a number of learning models suggested by the expert such as remote learning, face to face learning, e-learning, project-based learning, and Blended Learning.

Vocational education and training (VET) has been facing a lot of challenges lately in the context of geostrategic forces that are shaping our world. Recent technological changes, combined with shifts in global economic power, accelerating urbanization, and demographic changes have put pressure on the VET to become more responsive to the needs of the labour market and society. E-learning has been seen as an effective way of improving the quality of teaching and learning in VET schools due to its various forms. Nevertheless, there has been some disagreement in the litearture on the advantages and disadvantages of the use of of e-learning in VET. Besides, some studies recently reported a decline in enthusiasm about the effects of e-learning in companies. In order to closely examine the effects of e-learning in VET, we conduct a literature review. We then carry out a discussion of the pros and cons with the aim of developing suggestions for the better use of e-learning in VET. The results of the litearture review show that learners and providers of e-learning benefit from it in different ways. In order to minimise the risks involved in using e-learning, a mixture of online and face-to-face events could be used, and adjusted pedagogical concepts should be designed and developed explicitly for e-learning.

The university is currently involved--within Europe--in a process of coordinating higher education for adaptation to the new ECTS European credits, which implies changing from a teacher-centred model (teacher conveys knowledge) to a learner-centred model, a real challenge. Since 1996, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) has been carrying out the “Campus Virtual de la UAB” project. This platform fulfils several roles that aim at providing an answer to this challenge: it provides support to face-to-face teaching; it encourages teaching innovation; it promotes the creation of learning materials; it fosters communication; it favours monitoring of the learning process; it favours self-learning and self-assessment; and it enables blended teaching experiences. This chapter will focus on how to use the communication and discussion functionalities between teachers and students, between students themselves, and on monitoring of the students’ learning process.
