In the present study four Granulina species we recognized from the Turkish coasts: G. marginata (Bivona, 1832), G. occulta (Monterosato, 1869), G. boucheti Gofas, 1992 and G. melitensis Smriglio, Mariottini & Rufini, 1998. The high variability of the shell morphology is studied and «morphologic affinities» are comparatively analized, and two different complex of species are here recognised: the G. marginata/G. boucheti complex and the G. occulta/G. melitensis complex. Meanwhile, with our records the number of the species known from the research area has been increased to four with the addtion of G. boucheti and G. melitensis. The name Granulina guttula La Perna, 1999 is restored, being considered as not preoccuped by Erato guttula Sowerby, 1832. Granulina gubbiolii Smriglio & Mariottini, 1999 is here recognised as a junior synonym of Granulina minusculina (Locard, 1897).

Re-examination of the holotype of Neoaxius nicoyaensis Sakai, 2017 showed that it is conspecific with the axiid Guyanacaris caespitosa Squires, 1979 and thus Neoaxius Sakai, 2017 and Neoaxiidae Sakai, 2017 are respectively subjective junior synonyms of Guyanacaris Sakai, 2011 and Axiidae Huxley, 1879. The types and numerous specimens of the callianassid Trypaea vilavelebita Sakai & Türkay, 2012 are juveniles of the common northeastern Atlantic-Mediterranean species, Callianassa subterranea (Montagu, 1808); the name is therefore a subjective junior synonym. The monotypic callianopsid genera Pleurocalliax Sakai, 2011, Neocallianopsis Sakai, 2011 and Phaetoncalliax Sakai, Türkay, Beuck & Freiwald, 2015 are found not to differ from Callianopsis de Saint Laurent, 1973, the only alleged differences found to be untrue or trivial. Phaetoncalliax mauritana Sakai, Türkay, Beuck & Freiwald, 2015 and Neocallianopsis africana Sakai, Türkay, Beuck & Freiwald, 2015 are thereby transferred to Callianopsis, the latter a subjective junior synonym of the former. Contrary to the assertion of its author, the gourretiid Pseudogourretia portsudanensis Sakai, 2005, the only species in its genus, has no pleurobranchs. The genus Pseudogourretia Sakai, 2005 is therefore synonymised with Gourretia de Saint Laurent, 1973. The respective holotypes of Paracalliax stenophthalmus Sakai, Türkay, Beuck & Freiwald, 2015 and Paracalliax bollorei de Saint Laurent, 1979 were re-examined. Both are from the Banc d’Arguin, off Mauritania, and are identical at the species level. The upogebiid Kuwaitupogebia nithyanandan Sakai, Türkay & Al Aidaroos, 2015 from Kuwait is identical to Upogebia balmaorum Ngoc-Ho, 1990 from the Seychelles, Madagascar and tropical Western Australia. Kuwaitupogebia Sakai, Türkay & Al Aidaroos, 2015 is therefore synonymised with Upogebia Leach, 1814 and Kuwaitupogebiidae Sakai, Türkay & Al Aidaroos, 2015 with Upogebiidae Borradaile, 1903.

On the ground of an extensive study of topotypes and of the shell morphology documented in comparable Mediterranean populations, Granulina pusaterii Smriglio & Mariottini, 2003 described from the Tunisian Plateau is proved to belong to the natural variability of G. melitensis Smriglio, Mariottini & Rufini, 1998 and it is proposed as junior synonym name of the latter.

The family Drilliidae includes approximately 30 genera and 500 recent species. Among them, the genus Conopleura includes three recent species and shows a disjunct distribution in the central Indo-Pacific and the temperate northern Atlantic (Mediterranean Sea). Here, we review the genus, redescribe it, and investigate the validity of its accepted taxa by shell morphology and geometric morphometry. Conopleura striata and C. latiaxisa are considered as valid species. Their distribution has been enlarged to Taiwan and India for C. striata, and to Japan for C. latiaxisa. On the contrary, some discrepancies highlighted in the generic and familiar attribution of the Mediterranean species C. aliena suggested that it was established on abnormal shells of Tritia lima, a taxon of which C. aliena is considered a junior subjective synonym. This confutes the disjunct distribution of Conopleura. Based on a wide literature and material search on abnormalities in gastropods, we highlight the occurrence of a recurring aberration (here defined “Conopleura-like”) in gastropod shells that already led to the incorrect establishment of new taxa since early scientific observations.

Abstract Galactic infrared (IR) bubbles, which can be seen as shell-like structures at mid-IR wavelengths, are known to possess massive stars within their shell boundaries. In our previous study (Hanaoka, 2019, PASJ, 71, 6), we expanded the research area to the whole Galactic plane ($0^{\circ } \le l \le 360^{\circ }$, $|b| \le 5^{\circ }$) and studied systematic differences in the shell morphology and the IR luminosity of the IR bubbles between inner and outer Galactic regions. In this study, utilizing high spatial-resolution data of AKARI and WISE in the mid-IR and Herschel in the far-IR, we investigate the spatial distributions of dust components around each IR bubble to discuss the relation between the star-formation activity and the dust properties of the IR bubbles. For the 247 IR bubbles studied in Hanaoka (2019, PASJ, 71, 6), 165 IR bubbles are investigated in this study, which have the Herschel data ($|b|\le 1^{\circ }$) and known distances. We created their spectral energy distributions on a pixel-by-pixel basis around each IR bubble, and decomposed them with a dust model consisting of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), hot dust, warm dust and cold dust. As a result, we find that the offsets of dust heating sources from the shell centers in inner Galactic regions are systematically larger than those in outer Galactic regions. Many of the broken bubbles in inner Galactic regions show large angles between the offset and the direction of the broken shell from the center. Moreover, the spatial variations of the PAH intensity and cold dust emissivity around the IR bubbles in inner Galactic regions are larger than those in outer Galactic regions. We discuss these results in light of the interstellar environments and the formation mechanism of the massive stars associated with the IR bubbles.

Novel textiles have received a lot of attention from researchers in the last decade due to some of their unique features. The introduction of intelligent materials into textile structures offers an opportunity to develop multifunctional textiles, such as sensing, reacting, conducting electricity and performing energy conversion operations. In this research work nanocomposite-based highly piezoelectric and electroactive β-phase new textile has been developed using the pad-dry-cure method. The deposition of poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) − carbon nanofillers (CNF) − tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), Si(OCH2CH3)4 was acquired on a treated textile substrate using coating technique followed by evaporation to transform the passive (non-functional) textile into a dynamic textile with an enhanced piezoelectric β-phase. The aim of the study is the investigation of the impact the coating of textile via piezoelectric nanocomposites based PVDF-CNF (by optimizing piezoelectric crystalline phase). The chemical composition of CT/PVDF-CNC-TEOS textile was detected by qualitative elemental analysis (SEM/EDX). The added of 0.5% of CNF during the process provides material textiles with a piezoelectric β-phase of up to 50% has been measured by FTIR experiments. These results indicated that CNF has high efficiency in transforming the phase α introduced in the unloaded PVDF, to the β-phase in the case of nanocomposites. Consequently, this fabricated new textile exhibits glorious piezoelectric β-phase even with relatively low coating content of PVDF-CNF-TEOS. The study demonstrates that the pad-dry-cure method can potentially be used for the development of piezoelectric nanocomposite-coated wearable new textiles for sensors and energy harvesting applications. We believe that our study may inspire the research area for future advanced applications.

Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) is the most growing research area in wireless communication and has been gaining significant attention over recent years due to its role in designing intelligent transportation systems. Wireless multi-hop forwarding in VANETs is challenging since the data has to be relayed as soon as possible through the intermediate vehicles from the source to destination. This paper proposes a modified fuzzy-based greedy routing protocol (MFGR) which is an enhanced version of fuzzy logic-based greedy routing protocol (FLGR). Our proposed protocol applies fuzzy logic for the selection of the next greedy forwarder to forward the data reliably towards the destination. Five parameters, namely distance, direction, speed, position, and trust have been used to evaluate the node’s stability using fuzzy logic. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MFGR scheme can achieve the best performance in terms of the highest packet delivery ratio (PDR) and minimizes the average number of hops among all protocols.

The location-routing problem is a research area that simultaneously solves location-allocation and vehicle routing issues. It is critical to delivering emergency goods to customers with high reliability. In this paper, reliability in location and routing problems was considered as the probability of failure in depots, vehicles, and routs. The problem has two objectives, minimizing the cost and maximizing the reliability, the latter expressed by minimizing the expected cost of failure. First, a mathematical model of the problem was presented and due to its NP-hard nature, it was solved by a meta-heuristic approach using a NSGA-II algorithm and a discrete multi-objective firefly algorithm. The efficiency of these algorithms was studied through a complete set of examples and it was found that the multi-objective discrete firefly algorithm has a better Diversification Metric (DM) index; the Mean Ideal Distance (MID) and Spacing Metric (SM) indexes are only suitable for small to medium problems, losing their effectiveness for big problems.

The National Center for Health Statistics is assessing the usefulness of recruited web panels in multiple research areas. One research area examines the use of close-ended probe questions and split-panel experiments for evaluating question-response patterns. Another research area is the development of statistical methodology to leverage the strength of national survey data to evaluate, and possibly improve, health estimates from recruited panels. Recruited web panels, with their lower cost and faster production cycle, in combination with established population health surveys, may be useful for some purposes for statistical agencies. Our initial results indicate that web survey data from a recruited panel can be used for question evaluation studies without affecting other survey content. However, the success of these data to provide estimates that align with those from large national surveys will depend on many factors, including further understanding of design features of the recruited panel (e.g. coverage and mode effects), the statistical methods and covariates used to obtain the original and adjusted weights, and the health outcomes of interest.

Natural Language Processing for under-resourced languages is now a mainstream research area. However, there are limited studies on Natural Language Processing applications for many indigenous East African languages. As a contribution to covering the current gap of knowledge, this paper focuses on evaluating the application of well-established machine translation methods for one heavily under-resourced indigenous East African language called Lumasaaba. Specifically, we review the most common machine translation methods in the context of Lumasaaba including both rule-based and data-driven methods. Then we apply a state of the art data-driven machine translation method to learn models for automating translation between Lumasaaba and English using a very limited data set of parallel sentences. Automatic evaluation results show that a transformer-based Neural Machine Translation model architecture leads to consistently better BLEU scores than the recurrent neural network-based models. Moreover, the automatically generated translations can be comprehended to a reasonable extent and are usually associated with the source language input.
