Creative and original message appeals stimulate customers, generating arousal through novelties, meanings, associations, inspirations, human emotions and connections, and the degree to which the message appeals resonate and get the attention of the customers. Hedonic appeals imbue desirability around a product, endowing it with mystery or coolness, subtly invoking intentions, anticipation, and agency. Firms should highlight more about the hedonic rather than utilitarian features of products with high quality, highly consistent, or less complex firm-generated messages to persuade consumers to purchase. High-quality content is original and virtuosic, novel and compelling, curated and accurate, insightful and relevant, relatable and credible, authentic and immersive, and engaging and resonating with customers. Message goal consistency calls for alignment to central brand guidelines (i.e., what the brand stands for, its value proposition, and its purpose) and adherence to the brand DNA regarding look and feel, tone and manner in content creation. Writing clearly and concisely in a novel approach creates intrigue by making firm-generated content communications stick. Excellent writing and easy readability make for easy comprehension and consequently better persuasion. Firms stand to gain more by devoting resources, such as employee training for content creation and technology acquisition in getting high quality, easy-to-comprehend, and goal consistent messages to customers.

We introduce a novel approach to extract semantic relations (e.g., is-a and part-of relations) from Wikipedia articles. These relations are used to build up a large and up-to-date thesaurus providing background knowledge for tasks such as determining semantic ontology mappings. Our automatic approach uses a comprehensive set of semantic patterns, finite state machines and NLP techniques to extract millions of relations between concepts. An evaluation for different domains shows the high quality and effectiveness of the proposed approach. We also illustrate the value of the newly found relations for improving existing ontology mappings.

Crowdsourced content creation like articles or slogans can be powered by crowds of volunteers or workers from paid task markets. Volunteers often have expertise and are intrinsically motivated, but are a limited resource, and are not always reliably available. On the other hand, paid crowd workers are reliably available, can be guided to produce high-quality content, but cost money. How can these different populations of crowd workers be leveraged together to power cost-effective yet high-quality crowd-powered content-creation systems? To answer this question, we need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each. We conducted an online study where we hired paid crowd workers and recruited volunteers from social media to complete three content creation tasks for three real-world non-profit organizations that focus on empowering women. These tasks ranged in complexity from simply generating keywords or slogans to creating a draft biographical article. Our results show that paid crowds completed work and structured content following editorial guidelines more effectively. However, volunteer crowds provide content that is more original. Based on the findings, we suggest that crowd-powered content-creation systems could gain the best of both worlds by leveraging volunteers to scaffold the direction that original content should take; while having paid crowd workers structure content and prepare it for real world use.

A metamorphosis or a morphing is the process of continuously transforming one object into another, and are popular in computer animation, industrial design, and growth simulation. In this paper, a novel approach is presented for computing continuous shape transformation between polyhedral objects in this paper. Metamorphosis can be achieved by decomposing two objects into sets of individual convex sub-objects respectively and constructing the mapping between two sets, this method can solve the metamorphosis problem of two non-homotopic objects (including concave objects and holey objects). The results of object metamorphosis are discussed in this paper. The experiments show that this method can generate natural, high quality metamorphosis results with simple computation. This method can also be used in font composition and interpolation between two keyframes in 2D and 3D computer animation automatically.

Introduction/Innovation Concept: Digital media are a new frontier in medical education scholarship. Asynchronous education resources facilitate a multi-modal approach to teaching, and allows residents to personalize their learning to achieve mastery in their own time. The CanadiEM Digital Scholars Program is a nationwide initiative that provides residents with practical experiences in creating digital educational materials under the supervision of experts in the field. The program allows for collaboration and access to mentorship from top digital educators from across North America. Methods: Interested residents accepted into the program spent a period of their PGY4 year completing modules developed in the theory and science behind digital education. Four modules, developed in an iterative process, have been built on the topics of podcasting, blogging, digital identity, and patient communication. Each fellow was supervised members of the CanadiEM team, a faculty member from the resident’s home institution, and digital experts from across North America. Curriculum, Tool, or Material: The first fellow completed all aspects of the designed curriculum. Above this, he also engaged in blog content creation, initiated research on digital scholarship, and managed the editorial section of CanadiEM. The second fellow is currently halfway through his year (and is expected to complete the program within the year) and has co-authored 30 blog posts and 53 podcasts in 6 months. Conclusion: The CanadiEM Digital Scholars Program utilizes a novel approach to foster development of digital educators utilizing experts across North America. We have demonstrated the feasibility and sustainability with our initial pilot years. This program is being scaled next year to include two scholars per year, which will facilitate cross-collaboration between the scholars.

This conceptual article examines how Sustainable Initiatives of government and corporates can help shape behaviours of Millenials that can address the different needs and expectations of potential and existing employees. This can result in a sustained competitive advantage for the firms and enhanced self-esteem for the existing and prospective employees. Sustainability efforts should encourage youngsters to imbibe behaviours that are in line with governments and corporates' efforts to create a better planet to live in. These behaviours should help firms attract and retain a high-quality workforce because by integrating Sustainable HRM practices into the employee value proposition, they can establish a unique, employer brand. The paper also highlights the challenges faced by the government and corporates together to achieve these sustainable objectives.

AbstractWikipedia is cited in high-profile scientific journals, despite its poor reputation as information source. What warrants this acceptance by scientists? In search for answers, this article presents an assessment of the English Wikipedia according to Silberger's guide for reference works, analyzing its purpose, scope, arrangement, information given, access, and special characteristics, with an additional aspect: quality control of new content. An account of the author's experience in creating an entry in the Portuguese Wikipedia complements the assessment. In conclusion, Wikipedia has high quality content, with advantages such as the large volume of content in many languages, as well as disadvantages such as the emphasis on “popular” topics. There is also inadequate content, whose containment and repair depend on the literacy and engagement of the linguistic community that publishes it, as well as on following Wikipedia's editorial principles. Content creation is an opportunity to engage higher education students, as well as content evaluation, which is a form of peer review. Fruitful use of Wikipedia content depends essentially on the reader's critical judgment. Keywords: Wikipedia; Encyclopedias; Reference materials; Digital curation; Peer review.

Abstract This article tackles directionality as one of the most contentious issues in translation studies, still without solid empirical footing. The research presented here shows that, to understand directionality effects on the process of translation and its end product, performance in L2 → L1 and L1 → L2 translation needs to be compared in a specific setting in which more factors than directionality are considered—especially text type. For 26 professional translators who participated in an experimental study, L1 → L2 translation did not take significantly more time than L2 → L1 translation and the end products of both needed improvement from proofreaders who are native speakers of the target language. A close analysis of corrections made by the proofreaders shows that different aspects of translation quality are affected by directionality. A case study of two translators who produced high quality L1 → L2 translations reveals that their performance was affected more by text type than by directionality.

Abstract Background YouTube™ (“YouTube”) is often used as an educational tool to instruct anesthesia providers on regional anesthesia nerve blocks. However, there is no current objective standard to assess the educational quality of these user-uploaded videos. A new approach was used to objectively validate these videos by comparing them to high quality educational sources for the seven most commonly used nerve blocks. Objective We sought to evaluate the educational quality of user-uploaded videos when compared to the highest quality anesthesia society websites (NYSORA, ACEP, USRA) Methods We first catalogued the characteristics of the instructional material on three of the highest quality anesthesia society websites (NYSORA, ACEP, USRA) into 18 different items. Next, we surveyed the five most popular anesthesia block videos on YouTube for each of the seven peripheral nerve blocks in question. The presence or absence of each category was recorded. Results Although there were varying degrees of correlation between the high quality sources and the videos, rarely did YouTube videos contain as high a percentage of these educational characteristics as the well-established sources. Some videos contained very few of these important educational characteristics. Conclusion Although YouTube has been used an educational tool, we recommend that only high quality sources be used to teach or illustrate regional anesthesia nerve blocks.
