The effective utilization of capacity is an important operational goal that managers strive to achieve. Most textbooks use the following simple “bottleneck formula” to illustrate the calculation of process capacity: the capacity of each resource is first calculated by examining that resource in isolation; process capacity is then taken as the smallest (bottleneck) among the resource capacities. The bottleneck formula is, in fact, an approximation of the true process capacity and correctly calculates capacity only in some straightforward settings, for example, in processes where each activity requires only one resource and in processes where each resource is dedicated to only one activity. However, when activities require multiple resources simultaneously (collaboration) and when resources are capable of doing multiple activities (multitasking), the simple formula can be significantly inaccurate. Further, several commonly held managerial insights related to process capacity and least-capacity resources that emerge from the formula can be misleading. The main goal of this case is to alert students that, for processes with collaboration and multitasking, the use of the bottleneck formula brings the potential danger of reaching incorrect conclusions about capacity and what constitutes a bottleneck of a process and may eventually lead to erroneous decisions with significant financial impact, for example, investing in procuring an expensive resource without being able to realize the presumed increase in capacity. More generally, the case illustrates the principles of process capacity and bottleneck structures and clarifies some often-repeated misunderstandings on the relationship between process capacity and least-capacity resources. The case also illustrates the importance of using Gantt charts for conveniently displaying schedules of activities.

Research question: This paper studies the relation between organizational culture and perceived organizational effectiveness of an insurance company in a developing country with an emerging economy.Motivation: The main objective of the research is to determine whether there is a correlation between organizational culture and climate as a narrower concept, on the one hand and perceived organizational effectiveness on the other hand. Some authors noted a correlation between these organizational aspects. For example, Yan (2016) empirically confirmed that organizational culture positively and significantly correlates with organizational effectiveness. The relationship between organizational culture and organizational effectiveness was also examined by Cox and Trotter (2016), Chen (2017) and Deem, De Lotell and Kelly (2015). Idea: Starting from the findings of other authors that organizational culture indeed affects effectiveness, the authors of this paper wanted to examine whether this relation existed in  a state-owned insurance company in an emerging economy and if so, how to use this  to improve employees’ performance and overall business results. Data: They conducted the research in June 2017 on the sample of employees of Dunav Insurance Company and obtained six hundred and sixty six valid questionnaires. Tools: The questionnaires consisted of five general questions about demographic variables and twenty-nine closed-ended questions related to the topic. The researchers assessed the correlation between variables by Spearman Rho Coefficient and Chi-Square significance. Findings: The results showed the relationship between a number of aspects of organizational culture and climate on one hand and perceived organizational effectiveness on the other hand. Research results showed that the evaluation of effective utilization of working hours and professional capabilities is largely connected with the aspects of organizational climate that reflect poor working conditions and unethical attitude of employees. However, the evaluation of effective utilization of professional capabilities also relates to the perception of predominant aspects of an organizational climate that inspire positive internal relations. Contribution: The results presented in the paper can be used as the basis for organizational and managerial decision-making to improve work processes in the observed organization.

Abstract: The paper examines the relationship between the macroscopic parameters, such as the Young's modulus in the Hooke's law, the sound speed and the Debye characteristic temperature, with the binding energy of an individual atom. A formula for calculating the elastic deformation modulus is proposed. A simple formula is obtained to calculate the sound speed in a metal rod. It is suggested that the Debay characteristic temperature is connected with the binding energy of the ion in the solid lattice.

What kind of business environment can produce high single champion enterprise entrepreneurship is a new issue for discussion in research on entrepreneurship. Based on institutional configuration theory and the fcQCA method, the present paper analyses the relationship between the business environment and single champion enterprise entrepreneurship from the perspective of configuration. This paper studies the role of the business environment in 80 case cities all over the country in promoting high single champion enterprise entrepreneurship and discusses three business environment configurations concerning high single champion enterprise entrepreneurship and two configurations concerning non-high single champion enterprise entrepreneurship. Three typical business environment element configurations can promote high single champion enterprise entrepreneurship, namely, the market innovation type dominated by multiple resources, the financial service–driven type assisted by resources, and the market-driven type led by financial services, which reflects the significance of financial services and the market environment.

We analyze the concept of legal awareness of citizens, its structure, significance for a particular individual and for society as a whole, ways to increase the level of legal awareness of the population, as well as the con-sequences due to an increase in the level of legal awareness. We cover the is-sue of excess information in the legal sphere, its causes and consequences. We consider the essence of legal information burnout, its signs, potential danger and impact, identified preventive measures and methods to combat this phenomenon. We comprehend the impact of excessive legal information on professional deformation and professional burnout of lawyers, we have determined the functional significance of excessive legal information to citi-zens to maintain the proper level of their legal functional literacy. The pur-pose of the study is to determine the relationship between the increased vol-ume of legal awareness, information overload, legal information burnout and, as a consequence, the professional deformation of lawyers. We make an attempt to declare the existence of the phenomenon, which is conventionally called by the author legal information burnout. The study will be of interest to specialists in the field of jurisprudence, psychology, information technology, and may also be useful for other specialists and all those who are interested in the issues of this issue.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to estimate the relationship between the financial impact of a new drug and the recommendation for reimbursement by the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC).Methods: Data in the PBAC summary database were abstracted for decisions made between July 2005 and November 2009. Financial impact—the upper bound of the values presented in the PBAC summary database—was categorized as ≤A$0, >A$0 up to A$10 million, A$10 million up to A$30 million, and >A$30 million per year. Descriptive, logistic, survival, and recursive partitioning decision analyses were used to estimate the relationship between the financial impact of a new drug indication and the recommendation for reimbursement. Multivariable analyses controlled for other clinical and economic variables, including cost per quality-adjusted life-year gained. Results: Financial impact was a significant predictor of the recommendation for reimbursement. In the logistic analysis, the odds ratios of reimbursement for drug submissions with financial impacts ≥A$10 million to ≥A$30 million or >A$0 to <A$10 million compared with ≤A$0 were 0.12 (95 percent confidence interval [CI]: 0.03–0.51) and 0.16 (95 percent CI: 0.04–0.60), respectively. In the recursive partition decision analysis, the first split of the data was for submissions with a positive financial impact compared with those with a zero or negative financial impact. Conclusions: In Australia, financial impact on the drug budget is an important determinant of whether a new drug is recommended for reimbursement when cost-effectiveness estimates and other clinical and economic variables are controlled.

The pharmaceutical products market in Mexico involves four main actors: health providers, health payers, patients and pharmaceutical companies. The relationship between health providers and the pharmaceutical companies that supply the products required to prevent and treat illnesses is of particular interest. This relationship can be described within the frame of the treatment of diabetes mellitus (DM), a major health issue in most countries, and an urgent one in Mexico. The financial impact of the treatment of diabetes could be optimized through the use of the tools provided by market intelligence systems and best clinical practices. These results would also have an impact on major health metrics for the relevant population.

It is estimated that there are over a million pornographic sites on the Internet, with as many as 10,000 added every week. In addition to having a major financial impact, adult pornography is strongly associated with various types of violence against women, especially sexual assault. Some studies have found that the contribution of pornography to woman abuse in dating, marriage, and during or after separation/divorce is related to male peer support, which refers to the attachments to male peers and the resources they provide that perpetuate and legitimate woman abuse. The main objective of this chapter is twofold: (1) to review the extant social scientific research on the relationship between violence against women, male peer support, and adult Internet pornography and (2) to suggest new directions in empirical work on the association between these three social problems.

Short cut methods of estimating energy expenditure from pulmonary ventilation are examined. Although for any one subject carrying out a particular task, the relationship between his energy expenditure and his ventilation is approximately linear, the equation of the regression line differs from task to task and, for any particular task, from subject to subject. Thus, the estimation of energy expenditure, for the generality of subjects and tasks, from pulmonary ventilation alone, by application of a single simple formula, is seen to be unacceptable as the estimates could be subject to serious error. Analysis of expired air cannot, therefore, be dispensed with but the calculations for estimating energy expenditure in terms of ventilation and the analysis of the expired air, already simplified by Weir, are shown to be even further reducible. A nomogram by which they can be carried out with negligible error is presented. Submitted on March 1, 1962

Although social sustainability is an important component of sustainable agricultural production, little research has been conducted to assess social sustainability performance at the farm level. This study measures farmers’ social sustainability performance using (in)efficiency measures derived from a non-parametric dynamic directional distance function approach. It further examines the relationship between social (in)efficiency and financial performance measured by profitability, which is crucial to understand the financial impact of engaging in socially responsible activities. The empirical application focuses on a sample of Wisconsin dairy farms over the period 2007–2017. Results show that sample farms could have (decreased/)increased their social (in)efficiency by an average of 14%. Social (in)efficiency was found to be (negatively/)positively related to farm profitability, implying that social objectives can be achieved in tandem with economic goals.
