What kind of business environment can produce high single champion enterprise entrepreneurship is a new issue for discussion in research on entrepreneurship. Based on institutional configuration theory and the fcQCA method, the present paper analyses the relationship between the business environment and single champion enterprise entrepreneurship from the perspective of configuration. This paper studies the role of the business environment in 80 case cities all over the country in promoting high single champion enterprise entrepreneurship and discusses three business environment configurations concerning high single champion enterprise entrepreneurship and two configurations concerning non-high single champion enterprise entrepreneurship. Three typical business environment element configurations can promote high single champion enterprise entrepreneurship, namely, the market innovation type dominated by multiple resources, the financial service–driven type assisted by resources, and the market-driven type led by financial services, which reflects the significance of financial services and the market environment.

The internet medical industry is a new direction of the medical industry; however, internet medical enterprises have been going through a reshuffling period after 2016 and urgently need to improve their performance. The main aim of this study was to reveal the relationship between intellectual capital (IC) configurations and firm performance and guide ideal IC configuration decision to improve the performance of internet medical enterprises in China. First, a mechanism model was constructed to reveal the effects of IC configurations on firm performance, which is contribution to enrich IC configuration theory research. Then, fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) was used to guide its IC configurations selection currently using data from internet medical enterprises in China from 2012 to 2019. The research is contribution to enrich application research of IC configuration. The results show that IC affects firm performance by means of the configuration; currently ideal IC configurations selection of the internet medical industry should pay attention to human, relationship and physical capital; period and specific business will both affect the choice of IC configuration. The results of this study can deepen managers’ understanding of IC configurations and guide ideal IC configurations selection in the internet medical industry.

Employee direct involvement and indirect involvement have been identified as essential forms of an enterprise’s democratic management in the digital economy. Research on the complementary effects of direct and indirect involvement is still in a blank state in China, which limits the external validity and accumulation of employee participation theory. The present study aimed to investigate the complementary effects of employee direct involvement and indirect involvement on the firm’s financial performance. Although previous research suggests that the influence of employee direct or indirect involvement on corporate financial performance has been examined separately, it is unclear whether the association between employee direct involvement and indirect involvement is complementary or conflictual. Based on strategic human resource management theory, we semantically encode 2,680 corporate social responsibility reports and the annual reports of 268 state-owned listed enterprises published from 2014 to 2018 via content analysis method, and the economic effects of employee direct involvement and indirect involvement were concurrently measured. We use configuration theory to explore the complementary effects between employee direct involvement and indirect involvement. Our results reveal that (1) employee involvement in Chinese enterprises was unbalanced, (2) both employee direct involvement and indirect involvement were positively related to enterprise’s financial performance, and (3) there is a complementary effect between the two forms of employee involvement. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Although the realization of building information modeling (BIM) performance is the basis for the generation of user’s satisfaction, few studies have explored the influence path between BIM performance and BIM user’s satisfaction in recent years. Therefore, to enrich the research results of BIM user’s satisfaction and provide reference schemes for engineering practice, this study adopts the fsQCA (fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis) method, taking 39 project cases using BIM technology as the base sample to analyze the influence path between BIM performance and user’s satisfaction. Moreover, this study is based on the configuration theory, examining four elements of BIM performance: BIM accuracy, information integration, functional advantages and manager support, and the complexity of the project. Finally, this study identifies three types of configuration results: performance type, support type, and comprehensive type. The performance type can achieve high user satisfaction in relatively complex projects; the support type requires executive support to improve user satisfaction in less complex projects, and the comprehensive type improves satisfaction through multiple BIM performances without considering project complexity.

This paper presents a new winding configuration theory of conventional and unconventional slot-pole combinations that can be used to configure windings with any slot-pole combination. First, various two-layer windings can be divided into conventional balanced winding (CBW), unbalanced winding (UBW), unconventional even slot winding (UESW) and unconventional odd slot winding (UOSW). In addition, the winding configuration can be divided into two steps—slot sorting and slot distributions to phases—and the rule of winding distribution and connection of the four kinds of windings is given. Moreover, there are four models established corresponding to the four kinds of windings. The air-gap flux density and harmonic of models with double layer flux-barrier PM-assisted rotor and without flux-barrier rotor are analyzed and compared using two-dimensional transient finite element analysis (FEA). The effect of stator magneto motive force (MMF) on torque performance affected by winding configuration is analyzed by comparing air gap magnetic density under two kinds of rotors. The simulation of torque shows that UBW, UESW, and UOSW have a certain reducing effect on torque ripple in PMASynRM. Meanwhile, a brief comparison is made in terms of radial forces and power losses; the effects produced by UBW, UESW, and UOSW compared to CBW in these two aspects are acceptable.

PurposeDrawing on configuration theory and adopting a holistic perspective, the authors aim to explore strategic supply chain elements' interaction with internal and external contextual conditions. Specifically, they evaluate multivariate co-alignment of supply chain's capabilities (agility, adaptability, alignment), adhocracy organizational structure and environmental uncertainty (dynamism, munificence and complexity) that lead to superior performance outcomes (supply chain cycle time, financial performance, market performance).Design/methodology/approachA survey research design is adopted to collect primary and secondary data from 182 international firms. Cluster analysis and profile deviation techniques are employed first to derive a taxonomy of strategic supply chains and then examine multivariate co-alignment.FindingsThe analysis reveals that four groups of triple-A supply chains could emerge. It is found that strategic supply chains exhibit a flexible/organic/fluid organizational structure and a high level of triple-As in their processes. These supply chains perform superior to a higher level of environmental complexity, munificence and dynamism.Practical implicationsThis study's results provide insights for practitioners by informing their investment decisions for developing strategic supply chains. Specifically, this research highlights the contextuality of triple-A supply chains and offers best practices to capitalize on strategic supply chains.Originality/valueExecutives in organizations require a holistic understanding of various elements to ensure that the organizational system as a whole performs effectively. This research offers insights into the interdependencies of triple-A supply chains with other organizational and external environmental elements. Noteworthy implications for scholarship in operations/supply chain management and supply chain practitioners are presented.

PurposeWhile marketing analytics can be used to improve organizational decision-making and performance significantly, little research exists to examine how the configurations of multiple conditions affect marketing analytics use. This study draws on configuration theory to investigate marketing analytics use in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).Design/methodology/approachThis research employs a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis using data collected from a survey of 187 managers in UK SMEs.FindingsThe key findings show that (1) configurations of multiple conditions provide alternative pathways to marketing analytics use, and (2) the configurations for small firms are different from those for medium-sized firms.Research limitations/implicationsThe research results are based on several key configurational factors and a single key-informant method to collect subjective data from UK SME managers.Practical implicationsThe study helps SMEs to understand that marketing analytics use is influenced by the interaction of multiple conditions, that there are alternative pathways to marketing analytics use, and that SMEs should choose the configuration that fits best with their organizational contexts.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the literature by addressing an important yet underresearched area, i.e. marketing analytics use in SMEs, applying a configurational approach to the research phenomenon. It highlights different pathways to marketing analytics use in SMEs. The findings provide empirical evidence on the possibility and implication of marketing analytics use being asymmetrical and different between small and medium-sized firms.
