Abstract The variability in placement of students with autism and intellectual disability and lack of access to general education for these students suggests the need to identify factors associated with placement and then address the role of current policy. This article presents the results of a 5-year trend analysis of placement of students with autism and intellectual disability in California and the relationship between these trends in placement and district factors. Results suggest trends in increased access to general education environments for both groups of students and relationships between the probability of placement in general education settings and the percentage of students in the district who receive free or reduced-price meals. Implications for district and state leaders are discussed.

The role of head trauma in the development of glioblastoma is highly controversial and has been minimized since first put forward. This is not unexpected because skull injuries are overwhelmingly more common than glioblastoma. This paper presents a commentary based on the contributions of James Ewing, who established a major set of criteria for the recognition of an official relationship between trauma and cancer. Ewing’s criteria were very stringent. The scholars who succeeded Ewing have facilitated the characterization of traumatic brain injuries since the introduction of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Discussions of the various criteria that have since developed are now being conducted, and those of an unnecessarily limiting nature are being highlighted. Three transcription factors associated with traumatic brain injury have been identified: p53, hypoxia-inducible factor-1α, and c-MYC. A role for these three transcription factors in the relationship between traumatic brain injury and glioblastoma is suggested; this role may support a cause-and-effect link with the subsequent development of glioblastoma.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to offer a unique perspective on the role of entrepreneurs’ hard work for the relationship between entrepreneur human capital and venture success. To this end, this study examined whether entrepreneurs with high human capital work harder than entrepreneurs with low human capital, the effect of entrepreneurs’ hard work on venture performance, and whether entrepreneurs’ hard work mediates the relationship between entrepreneur human capital and venture performance.Design/methodology/approachIn this explorative study, the role of entrepreneurs’ hard work as a mediator that transfers entrepreneur human capital into venture success was examined in a sample of 2,648 single-founder startups in the USA and 21,184 observations during the period of 2004-2011.FindingsThe effect of entrepreneurs’ industry experience on entrepreneurs’ hard work was significantly positive, while the effect of entrepreneurs’ general education on entrepreneurs’ hard work was significantly negative. Moreover, entrepreneurs’ hard work was a significant predictor of venture success. Finally, the results showed that entrepreneurs’ hard work partially mediates the positive relationship between entrepreneurs’ industry experience and venture success.Originality/valueOn one hand, the link between human capital and firm performance has been studied thoroughly and findings so far support the positive link between them. On the other hand, there has been continuous criticism that human capital gained much of its attention at the expense of human labor. There is a paucity of research, however, that investigating the dynamics of the relationships between human capital and human labor. This study provides an empirical explanation of such dynamics of the relationships of human characteristics in the context of entrepreneurship.

Background: Children with intellectual disability commonly lack access to pediatric hospice care services. Residential care may be a critical component in providing access to hospice care for children with intellectual disability. Objective/Hypothesis: This research tested whether residential care intensifies the relationship between intellectual disability and hospice utilization (ie, hospice enrollment, hospice length of stay), while controlling for demographic characteristics. Methods: Multivariate regression analyses were conducted using 2008 to 2010 California Medicaid claims data. Results: The odds of children with intellectual disability in residential care enrolling in hospice care were 3 times higher than their counterparts in their last year of life, when controlling for demographics. Residential care promoted hospice enrollment among children with intellectual disability. The interaction between intellectual disability and residential care was not related to hospice length of stay. Residential care did not attenuate or intensify the relationship between intellectual disability and hospice length of stay. Conclusions: The findings highlight the important role of residential care in facilitating hospice enrollment for children with intellectual disability. More research is needed to understand the capability of residential care staff to identify children with intellectual disability earlier in their end-of-life trajectory and initiate longer hospice length of stays.

The concept of intellectual readiness for learning, which is considered as the main condition for successful education at a university, is defined. Developed competencies of BSc students in training area 35.03.06 “Agro engineering” were analyzed. This analysis demonstrates the importance of knowledge of the basic mathematical and natural laws for solving typical problems and participating in experimental professional research. The role of the “Electrical Materials”course in the development of students’ general professional and specific professional competencies is revealed. The paper presents the research results identifying the relationship between the mental development level, formed in general education, and the success of mastering the “Electrical materials” course. At the same time, knowledge of scientific concepts, the development of the classification mental operation and the ability to perform mental actions by analogy turned out to be determining. According to the results of the research, five groups of students were identified. They differ in the success of the acquisition of knowledge and proximity to the socio-psychological standard. Quantitative and qualitative indicators of their mental development characteristics were also described. The specificity of the relationships between the parameters of intellectual readiness and success in mastering the discipline is described. It is concluded that it is necessary to stimulate the mental development of students in the process of developing professional competencies, taking into account the specific features of the structure of intellectual abilities, improving methods for assessing intellectual readiness.

It shows the role of education and upbringing in increasing the socio-political activity of women, as well as the huge contribution of women of our country to the spiritual and moral development of society, the well-being of our children. The article reveals the essence and significance of reforms in public education, decrees, resolutions, as well as other problems in this system and specific plans and prospects for its development. It deals with the system of effective measures for spiritual education, emphasizes the importance of further strengthening the cooperation between higher education institutions and general education schools.

This paper discusses a case of maternal homicide which occurred in the course of a major affective disorder. The relationship between mental illness and criminality is reviewed with a particular emphasis on affective disorder in relation to filicide. A number of significant issues are dealt with including consequences of failure to elicit positive family history of affective disorder, suicide and filicide. Indeed, a history of familial double filicide raises the question of possible hereditary influences. The significance of hypochondriacal symptomatology in the course of the illness and the role of steroids in precipitating or aggravating a psychotic depression also need to be explored. It primarily addresses the importance of prevention and recognition of risk factors associated with child murder committed by depressed parents.

Debate regarding the relationship between individual and state has been prominent throughout the current UK government's term in office and localism has come to occupy a central role in current policy. This article argues that attempts to deliver this localist vision should focus on the critical role of social trust and that this is best developed through collaboration. The actions identified as necessary for delivering decentralisation are considered alongside a review of the view of localism articulated in Coalition policy. The article then explores collaboration and co-production as a means of strengthening social networks and delivering the promises of localism.

Background: The study explores the relationship between quality of life (QoL) and employability skills in a non-random sample of 100 employees of occupational centres (OCs) in Barcelona (Spain). The influence of gender, age and level of intellectual disability (ID) is also explored. Method: A quantitative approach was adopted to collect and examine data, gathered through two different instruments: the GENCAT SCALE (Verdugo et al., 2008) (and the Employability Skills Scale (Jariot, Laborda and González, 2020). Results: A correlation between QoL and employability skills has been found. A relationship between age and employability skills was also found, in which younger individuals reported better in employability skills. Age was also found to have an effect on some QoL domains. The ID level turned out to be a significant factor in the development of employability skills, as well as in some QoL domains. The crucial role of job placement in personal development is underlined, as well as the need for more inclusive procedures in occupancy services.
