Drawing from the job demands–resources (JD-R) model, this study sets out to investigate two complementary mechanisms that underpin the connection between employees’ exposure to abusive supervision and diminished job performance – one that is health-related (higher emotional exhaustion) and another that is motivation-related (lower work engagement). It also examines how this harmful process might be contained by employees’ mindfulness, particularly as manifest in its attention–awareness component. Data collected across three points in time among employees and supervisors in different organizations show that the motivation-based mechanism is more prominent than its health-impairment counterpart in connecting abusive supervision with lower job performance. The results also reveal a buffering effect of employees’ mindfulness on their responses to abusive supervision. JEL Classification: M50

ABSTRACTObjective:The current literature on caregiving and bereavement indicates that the relationship between these two common life events is complex and needs to be further studied in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of their interaction. Methods:In the current project, 50 spouses of hospice patients with end-stage lung cancer or dementia were assessed while caregiving and at an average of 4 months after the death on a variety of measures, including caregiving stressors, appraisals, social resources, and well-being. A stress process model was utilized in order to examine which preloss factors were associated with postloss depression, life satisfaction, and grief. Results:Our results indicated that patient diagnosis (cancer or dementia) and caregiver appraisals (stressfulness of functional impairment and positive aspects of caregiving) were not predictors on any of our well-being outcomes. However, fewer months caregiving was a significant predictor of both higher depression and grief postloss. Additionally, lower levels of social activities, smaller social networks, and lower satisfaction with social support were significantly associated with higher postloss depression.Significance of results:Results support both the resource depletion and anticipatory grief hypotheses and suggest that short-term bereavement outcomes are different than factors that predict well-being while caregiving. Future studies should address whether long-term bereavement outcomes differ by baseline caregiving characteristics to guide intervention research.

Abstract Providing care to an aging society in the new normal requires increased attention to the informal caregivers who support the health and well-being of older adults with chronic conditions. Hispanic caregivers carry a high caregiver-associated burden. Health disparities experienced by Hispanics, coupled with the emotional, social and physical demands of caregiving, may set an unprecedented risk for lower health-related quality of life (HRQoL). In a quantitative analysis, we investigated the relationship between spirituality, loneliness and HRQoL in Hispanic cancer caregivers using baseline data from the Support for Latinas with Breast Cancer study (N= 234 Hispanic caregivers). Findings suggested an indirect effect of spirituality on HRQoL through reduced loneliness among more spiritual caregivers, effects that were independent of age. The second study was conducted using qualitative semi-structured interviews (N= 10) with Hispanic caregivers. Interviews evaluated spirituality and HRQoL in Hispanic cancer caregivers who reported variable levels of loneliness. Five themes emerged: caregiver experience, coping strategies, loneliness, religion to gain strength or support, and spirituality to gain strength or support. Results supported the role of spirituality in promoting higher HRQoL in Hispanic cancer caregivers and elucidated pathways to intervene on HRQoL through spirituality. With Hispanics often underutilizing formal services, having an improved understanding of caregiving experiences, particularly related to spirituality, will support the development of culturally-relevant strategies and programming to promote HRQoL for Hispanic caregivers.

The current study examined the moderating role of socioeconomic status (SES) in the association between digital health literacy (DHL) and psychological well-being of 801 university students in Hong Kong and Macao amid the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Results showed that DHL and SES were positively associated with psychological well-being. Surprisingly, SES negatively modified the relationship between DHL and psychological well-being. We argue that while attempts are being made to improve the well-being through DHL among students and others alike, a one-size-fits-all approach would not suffice because of diversity in students’ socioeconomic backgrounds.

Background. Fulminant myocarditis (FM) is a potentially lethal condition in children due to rapid progressive hemodynamic instability and cardiogenic shock. Patients with FM might show different clinical manifestations on emergency department admission. Case. Herein, we describe the case of a 12-year-old girl who was admitted to our institution’s emergency department due to complaints of abdominal pain and incessant vomiting. However, we detected an early onset of atrial fibrillation (AF) accompanied by FM. The patient’s condition of AF and severe hemodynamic disorder was successfully treated in our institution’s pediatric intensive care unit. Conclusion. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the co-occurrence of FM and AF successfully treated in childhood. This case report will serve as a guide for the treatment of cases with FM accompanied by AF.

Abstract Previous studies note daily emotional well-being and sleep duration as significant correlates of cardiovascular health including cardiometabolic syndrome. However, not much is known about the interactive effects of emotional well-being and sleep. Expanding upon current research, this study examined whether sleep deficiency, defined as having on average <7 hours of sleep a day, moderated the associations between daily emotional well-being and cardiometabolic syndrome. Data was drawn from the Midlife in the United States Biomarker Project and the National Study of Daily Experiences (N = 1,163; Mean age = 53.3). Results showed significant interaction effects- higher negative affect was associated with worse cardiometabolic syndrome and higher positive affect was associated with better cardiometabolic syndrome only among those with deficient sleep. Such association was stronger for older adults compared to young adults. These findings suggest that individuals with insufficient sleep are more affected by health-related benefits and costs of daily emotional experiences.
