The Dunkin Hartley is the most common guinea pig strain used in biomedical research, particularly for studies of asthma, allergy, infectious disease, reproduction, and osteoarthritis. Minimally invasive blood tests, such as complete blood counts and serum biochemistry profiles, are often collected for diagnostics and laboratory analyses. However, reference intervals for these assays have not yet been well-documented in this strain. The purpose of this study was to establish reference intervals for hematologic and biochemical parameters of Dunkin Hartley guinea pigs and determine age- and sex-related differences. Hematologic and biochemical parameters were retrospectively obtained from 145 male and 68 female guinea pigs between 2 and 15 months of age. All blood parameters were analyzed by a veterinary clinical pathology laboratory. Reference intervals were established according to the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology guidelines. Age- and sex-related differences were determined using unpaired t-tests or nonparametric Mann-Whitney tests. Hematocrit, red blood cell distribution width, mean platelet volume, white blood cell count, heterophils, monocytes, eosinophils, glucose, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, calcium, magnesium, total protein, albumin, globulin, cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma glutamyl transferase, and bicarbonate increased with age. Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, cellular hemoglobin concentration mean, platelets, lymphocytes, phosphorus, albumin/globulin ratio, alkaline phosphatase, anion gap, and calculated osmolality decreased with age. Males had higher hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cell count, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, white blood cell count, heterophils, Foa-Kurloff cells, alanine aminotransferase, and bicarbonate and lower mean corpuscular volume, red blood cell distribution width, platelets, mean platelet volume, eosinophils, total protein, albumin, globulin, cholesterol, potassium, anion gap, calculated osmolality, and iron compared to females. Establishing age and sex differences in hematologic and biochemical parameters of Dunkin Hartley guinea pigs provides valuable insight into their physiology to better evaluate diagnostics and experimental results.

Background: This study aimed to assess the basic red blood cell variables and hematological indices in children and adolescents and analyze the differences regarding age and sex. Methods: Overall, 320 young participants, age 8 to 18 yr, were enrolled at Laboratory of Sport’s Medicine, Medical Faculty, Skopje, Macedonia in 2016. Capillary blood samples were drawn and following hematologic parameters were measured: the red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), hematocrit level (Hct) and hematological indexes: mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean hemoglobin concentration (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and red cell distribution width (RDW). Results: RBC variables in male group showed high statistical level of significance between age different groups (P=0.001) for all studied parameters except MCHC (P=0.423) and RDW (P=0.174). ANOVA test and multivariate tests in female group showed that there was no significant difference for all hematological parameters between age different groups. Regarding the sex differences, male participants had significantly higher red blood count (P<0.001), hemoglobin content (P<0.001) and hematocrit (P<0.001). Conclusion: Hematological parameters in adolescent as inhomogeneous population are not quantified sufficiently, especially hematological indices. RBC variables, regardless of the age, differ very much between male and female examinees, in favor of the male examinees. Hematological indices were insignificantly higher in males. Regarding the age of examinees, RBC variables showed significant inter-groups differences only within male adolescents. While with girls, ages span 8 to 18 yr, we did not find significant differences for most of the hematological variables.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Platelet along with red blood cell count is a part of complete blood cell count, one of the most frequent laboratory tests in medicine. Platelet distribution width, plateletcrit and mean platelet volume are three indices provided by hematological analyzers. There are few reports in literature regarding the correlation of these three parameters with red blood cell parameters. AIM: Aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between these platelets parameters and red cell parameters: hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume and red blood cell distribution width. METHODS: Three hundred and three healthy blood donor volunteers (176 men and 127 women, mean age 37,3 years) were included. None of them had any known hematological disease in the past. The parameters mentioned above were measured by the automated hematological analyzer Coulter®LH780. RESULTS: The mean values for platelets were: PCT: 0,25±0,11%, MPV: 8,11±1,94 fL and PDW: 15,89±2,74%. The mean values for their parallel red blood cell parameters were: HCT: 40,55±2,63%), MCV: 91±4,17 fL, RDW: 13,3±1,35% Statistical and regression analysis including the correlation coefficient between platelet and red cell parameters as well as Student’s t-test was carried out. CONCLUSIONS: There seems to be no significant correlation between HCT and PCT. MCV and MPV were not correlated significantly as well, indicating that red blood cell and platelet sizes are independent. But there is a statistically significant correlation between RDW and PDW (r: 0,68, p<0,01) demostrating that anisocytosis of red blood cells and platelets might occur simultaneously. Based on these observations, further more studies should be carried out for the correlation between platelets and red blood cell indices in certain disorders.

The maternal body must adapt to fetal growth and development during the state of pregnancy for successful foal and mother. Pregnancy status as in other mammals is related to physiology and hematology. This study aimed to compare the hematology profiles and biochemical parameters of late pregnant and non-pregnant mares. Twenty-two mares were included in the study. Mares were divided into two groups according to the pregnancy status. Hematology profile and biochemical parameters were analyzed from blood samples collected from the jugular vein. All data were analyzed using Stata 12/MP4. White blood cell count, lymphocyte, red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, monocyte and percentage of monocyte were significantly lower in non-pregnant mares compared to late pregnant mares (P<0.05). No significant differences were noted in values of neutrophil, eosinophil, mean cell volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, platelet, mean platelet volume, red cell distribution width in both groups (P>0.05). On the other hand, biochemical parameters analysis showed that calcium, total bilirubin, and triglyceride concentrations were greater in late pregnant mares (P<0.05). However, urea, albumin, cholesterol, and magnesium concentrations were similar among groups (P>0.05). In conclusion, the present study showed hematology profile and biochemical parameters differences in late pregnant and non-pregnant mares. These values could be useful in clinical practices to assess the situation of late pregnant mares.

Background: During viral outbreaks, pregnancy poses an increased risk of infection for women. Methods: In a prospective study, all patients admitted for delivery at term to Elena Doamna Obstetrics and Gynecology University Hospital in Iasi, Romania, between 1 April 2020 and 31 December 2020 were included. There were 457 patients, divided into two groups: group 1, SARS-CoV-2-positive patients (n = 46) and group 2, SARS-CoV-2-negative patients (n = 411). Among other tests, complete blood count was determined upon admittance, and the following values were studied: white blood cell count, lymphocytes, neutrophils, red blood cell count, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, red blood cell distribution width, hematocrit, platelet count, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, plateletcrit, and platelet large cell ratio. Results: in pregnant SARS-CoV-2-infected patients at term, there was a significant decrease in white blood cell, neutrophil, and lymphocyte count, and an increase in mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, compared to healthy pregnant women at term, although all still within normal limits. None of the other components of the complete blood count or fetal outcomes studied was significantly influenced by SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnant patients at term.

The article presents the results of the research concerning the morphological changes in the blood of the predatory fish species (perch, pike and zander) сaused by nematodical parasitic disease – eustrongylidosis. The research has been conducted in 2014–2018. It has been found that in the blood of perch with eustrongylidosis the hemoglobin and the red-blood-cell count decreased by 6.87 and 42.11 respectively, the white-blood-cell count increased by 8.95%; the basophils and pseudobasophils count – by 129.17%; the eosinophils and pseudoeosinophils count – by 131%; the number of band and segmented neutrophils increased by 27.92 and 37.5% respectively; the young neutrophils were not registered; the number of monocytes – by 16.34%; the lymphocyte count reduced by 3.27% in contrast with a fish that were not sick with the disease. The significant morphological changes in the blood of pikes with eustrongylidosis were also observed. Thus, the hemoglobin concentration, the number of red blood cells and lymphocytes decreased by 11.02, 26.32 and 3.16% respectively. The total leukocytes count increased by 22.02%; the basophils and pseudobasophils count – by 114%; the eosinophils and pseudoiesinophils count – by 95.83%; the number of band and segmented neutrophils increased by 1.71 and 46.72% respectively; a reduction of the young neutrophil granulocytes amount to 26% was noted; the number of monocytes of the blood increased by 25.83% in contrast with pikes that were not affected by the eustrongylidosis. A reduction of the red-blood-cell and lymphocytes amount, as well as hemoglobin concentration – to 30.05, 4.4 та 6.3% respectively was observed in hematological screening of the blood of zanders. The amount of leukocytes in the blood of infested fish increased by 10.6%; the basophils and pseudobasophils count – by 69.23%; the eosinophils and pseudoeosinophils count – by 116.67%; the number of band and segmented neutrophils increased by 15.58 and 23.27% respectively; the elevation of the number of young neutrophils to 5.75% was registered; the number of monocytes increased by 17.46% in contrast with zanders that were not infested.

AbstractBACKGROUNDIn a collaboration between the Canadian Laboratory Initiative on Pediatric Reference Intervals (CALIPER) and the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS), we determined reference value distributions using an a priori approach and created a comprehensive database of age- and sex-stratified reference intervals for clinically relevant hematologic parameters in a large household population of children and adults.METHODSThe CHMS collected data and blood samples from 11 999 respondents aged 3–79 years. Hematology markers were measured with either the Beckman Coulter HmX or Siemens Sysmex CA-500 Series analyzers. After applying exclusion criteria and removing outliers, we determined statistically relevant age and sex partitions and calculated reference intervals, including 90% CIs, according to CSLI C28-A3 guidelines.RESULTSHematology marker values showed dynamic changes from childhood into adulthood as well as between sexes, necessitating distinct partitions throughout life. Most age partitions were necessary during childhood, reflecting the hematologic changes that occur during growth and development. Hemoglobin, red blood cell count, hematocrit, and indices (mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) increased with age, but females had lower hemoglobin and hematocrit starting at puberty. Platelet count gradually decreased with age and required multiple sex partitions during adolescence and adulthood. White blood cell count remained relatively constant over life, whereas fibrinogen increased slightly, requiring distinct age and sex partitions.CONCLUSIONSThe robust dataset generated in this study has allowed observation of dynamic biological profiles of several hematology markers and the establishment of comprehensive age- and sex-specific reference intervals that may contribute to accurate monitoring of pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.

The purpose of the research: study of the influence of increased doses of fenbendazole supramolecular complex (FSMC) on sheep’s organism. Materials and methods. The experiment was carried out at the Podolsk Department of All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Fundamental and Applied Parasitology of Animals and Plants named after K. I. Skryabin on 20 manorial invasion-free sheep aged 2-3 years old. Animals were divided according to the principle of analogues into 4 groups, 5 heads in each group. Animals of the 1, 2 and 3 group were orally administered with FSMC given as a single dose of 2, 6, 10 mg/kg, respectively, according to the active substance, i.e in therapeutic and in a dose increased by 3 and 5 times. Sheep of the fourth group didn’t receive the drug and they were as control. Study of clinical, hematological and biochemical parameters of animals from all groups was conducted 1 day before and in 1, 3, 5 days after administration of the drug by means of standard methods. Results and discussion. FSMC in therapeutic dose as well as in a dose increased by 3 and 5 times doesn’t have negative influence on clinical, hematological and biochemical parameters of the sheep. State of the sheep, which received the drug in doses of 20, 60, 100 mg/kg, was within the physiologically normal state and didn’t differ from the state before administration of the drug and from the animals of the control group. Drug security index exceeds 5. Red blood cell count, white blood cell count, hemoglobin count, leukogram parameters as well as biochemical parameters of blood: activity of alkaline phosphatase and amylase, bilirubin, creatinine, urea and glucose counts were within normal limits and didn’t differ from the parameters of the control animals.
