Changing pedagogic identities of tutors and students in the design studio: Case study of desk and peer critiques

This article explores the tools and processes of effective learning in the design studio with a special emphasis on the pedagogic roles of the tutors and the students in desk critique and peer critique. It aims to identify the ways that pedagogical roles of the tutor and the student change due to the nature of their communication and the degree of their engagement in learning processes. The inquiry is based on the findings of a qualitative case study involving tutors, students and graduates from a bachelor of architecture degree programme. Data were gathered via focus group and in-depth interviews, studio observations and analysed through qualitative content analysis. The findings indicated that the pedagogic identity of a tutor could help scaffold the formation of a community of learners in the design studio. However, the lack of negotiation and trust between a tutor and students in the feedback processes weakens the students’ effective learning experiences.

India is grappling with the problem of controlling tuberculosis nearly for the past 50 years. The problem of nonadherence to treatment regimen has also worsened the situation of multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in India. This article explores the factors behind nonadherence among erstwhile TB defaulters in a rural district in India. In-depth interviews with seven chronic defaulters and with healthcare professionals were conducted at a government-run Chest Clinic. In addition to in-depth interviews with defaulters and healthcare professionals, medical records and government orders related to TB control were examined extensively. Participants were also observed to understand their interaction with healthcare professionals and fellow patients, especially during drug delivery time. Qualitative content analysis is the most appropriate method to analyze the transcribed text and archival records. Qualitative content analysis brought out five major themes responsible for their past nonadherence behavior, namely, (a) Awareness about tuberculosis and treatment, (b) Symptom recognition and self-medication, (c) Family support, (d) Accessibility, and (e) Stigma. Findings are documented according to the major themes and documenting direct quotes from participants and with healthcare professionals wherever appropriate. This case study also provided context-specific recommendations to the healthcare professionals as regards the nonadherence behavior among TB patients. It is hoped these focused recommendations, albeit known to the healthcare professionals, would be extremely useful in making modifications to the existing program to tackle the nonadherence behavior.

O objetivo é averiguar a correlação dos fatores motivacionais e produtivos no contexto institucional da Polícia Civil. O estudo de caso foi conduzido por entrevistas em profundidade com um Delegado de Polícia, um Investigador de Polícia, e um Escrivão de Polícia. A análise de conteúdo foi utilizada. Conclui-se que há evidente correlação entre o desenvolvimento de artefatos motivacionais, sejam eles de ordem ambiental ou individual, com a produtividade na instituição da Polícia Civil. Destaca-se também, que apesar do controle e avaliação dos índices de produtividade serem predominantemente burocráticos, institucionalizados e legitimados, a ligação que se estabelece com a manifestação dos artefatos motivacionais é subjetiva, relacional e intangível nas normas institucionais. Destaca-se este evento neste artigo, porque como foi visto anteriormente, tanto a natureza do trabalho, quanto o ambiente da Polícia Civil, estão em total desencontro ao desenvolvimento de produtividade e motivação no sentido clássico destas vertentes. The aims is to determine the correlation of the motivational and productive factors in the institutional context of the Civil Police. The case study was conducted by in-depth interviews with a Chief of Police, Police Investigator, and Actuary Police. The content analysis was used for fixed grid. It is concluded that there is clear correlation between the development of motivational artifacts, whether environmental or individual order, with productivity in the civil police institution. Also noteworthy is that despite the control and evaluation of productivity indexes were predominantly bureaucratic, institutionalized and legitimized, the connection that is established with the manifestation of motivational artifacts is subjective, relational and intangible assets in the institutional rules. It highlights this event in this article, because as discussed above, both the nature of the work, as the environment of the Civil Police, are in complete disagreement with the development of productivity and motivation in the classical sense of the aforementioned areas.

‘Reality’ television is a global and highly popular television phenomenon. Despite its public and academic critique as cultural ‘trash’, the genre enjoys great economic legitimacy. In recent years, other ‘trashy’ television genres, such as soap operas, have gained aesthetic-artistic legitimacy alongside their economic legitimacy. Taking a Bourdieusian approach and using the discourse about Israeli ‘reality’ shows as a case study, this article addresses the question of whether a similar process is evident in television critics’ attitudes towards reality television. Using quantitative and qualitative content analysis of reviews of ‘reality’ shows between 2003 and 2014, the article shows that the main question debated in such reviews is the genre’s morality rather than its aesthetic value: for Israeli critics, it is the moral attributes of these shows, not their aesthetic or artistic worth, which determine their ‘quality’.

This research paper inspected the role of Pakistani media to protect indigenous languages and culture in Pakistan. The study examined the situation; if Pakistani media outpours concern with the native languages or not. The article also checked the media landscape, its language-wise segregation and scenario of literacy in different areas of the country. The outcomes of the study showed that Pakistani media is neglecting the indigenous languages. The study results exhibited clearly that media houses’ focus on protecting native languages, is not profound. The findings also showed that foreign ownership of Media houses plays a role in neglecting indigenous language promotions. The current study presented that Pakistani mainstream media is damaging the local and native languages. The study was the outcome of qualitative content analysis and in-depth interviews of senior communication experts.

AbstractThis study aims to identify, analyze and describe the vulnerability of workplace accidents that are commonly experienced by groups of Bajo Tribal fishermen. In addition, the types of causes of work accidents and the strategies of Bajo fishermen divers overcome the vulnerability to workplace accidents. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative (case study method). While, data collection is done through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results showed that the types of work accidents that are often experienced by Bajo diver fishermen are cramping of limbs (feet, hands, and stomach),to temporary paralysis and total paralysis. Some of the causes of Bajo diver work accidents are accidents when using fish bombs; forget (kalupang) using a modified compressor when diving; exhausted when diving (kamaleang); exposed to very cold lumps of water that resemble ice water; and attacked by sea ghosts (kasamperoang). The strategy of the Bajo divers in overcoming work accidents begins with "paruru" (rituals carried out in the house before going to sea), "racing nails" (the ritual of feeding boat guards and marine guards on boats), "niba pinah" ( the ritual of throwing betel nut into the sea to ask for protection from the guardians of the sea), observing the conditions of the sea, and understanding the symptoms of illness and its treatment personally, handling families, involving traditional healers and medical personnel.   Penelitian ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi, menganalisis dan mendeskripsikan kerentanan kecelakaan kerja yang pada umumnya dialami oleh kelompok-kelompok nelayan penyelam Suku Bajo. Selain itu, juga dijelaskan jenis-jenis penyebab kecelakaan kerja dan strategi penyelam nelayan Bajo mengatasi kerentanan kecelakaan kerja. Metode yang digunakan dalam peneltian ini adalah metode kualitatif (studi kasus) yang bersifat deskriptif. Sedang, pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi, wawancara mendalam, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa jenis-jenis kecelakaan kerja yang seringkali dialami nelayan penyelam Suku Bajo adalah kram anggota tubuh (kaki, tangan, dan perut), hingga lumpuh sementara dan lumpuh total. Beberapa penyebab kecelakaan kerja penyelam Bajo adalah adanya kecelakaan saat penggunaan alat bom ikan; lupa (kalupang) menggunakan alat kompresor yang dimodifikasi saat menyelam; kelelahan saat menyelam (kamaleang); terkena gumpalan air yang sangat dingin yang menyerupai air es; dan diserang hantu laut (kasamperoang). Strategi penyelam Suku Bajo dalam mengatasi kecelakaan kerja, diawali dengan melakukan “paruru” (ritual yang dilakukan di dalam rumah sebelum melaut),“pakang balapati” (ritual memberi makan penjaga perahu dan penjaga laut yang dilakukan diatas perahu), “niba pinah”(ritual membuang pinang ke laut untuk meminta perlindungan kepada penjaga laut), mengamati kondisi laut dan memahami gejala sakit dan pengobatannya secara personal, penanganan keluarga, melibatkan dukun dan tenaga medis modern.

Abstract Background: It is known that the transition from medical school to clinical work can be stressful. In some countries, an introductory service bridges the gap, introducing the doctor-to-be to clinical work. However, there is a lack of scientific knowledge about whether these introductory services serve their purpose as justifiable introductions. To address the gap, this paper aimed to explore experiences that junior doctors hold of the medical internship.Methods: Using a qualitative description approach, data was collected through twelve individual in-depth interviews with volunteering medical interns from three different hospital sites in Sweden. Data were verbatim transcribed and analysed by qualitative content analysis, generating categories and themes. Results: Four main themes were identified in our data. The interns felt increasingly comfortable as doctors (‘finding one’s feet’) through taking responsibility for patients while receiving necessary help and assistance (‘a doctor with support’). Although appreciative of getting an overview of the healthcare organisation (‘healthcare sightseeing’), interns were exhausted by repeatedly changing workplaces and felt stuck in a rigid framework (‘stuck at the zoo’).Conclusions: This study showed that the transition from medical student to clinical doctor does not necessarily have to be characterised by stress and mental exhaustion but can, with extensive support, provide a fruitful opportunity for interns to grow into their roles as doctors.

This paper presents the views of four Thai government organizations who had been awarded ISO/IEC 29110 Basic Profile Certification. Team ideas as to the success factors and barriers involved in implementations are explored. In-depth interviews with closed- and open-ended questions were conducted. The data collected was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The results show two reasons for choosing standard, first, to enhance software development process, and second, because the financial support from the SIPA. The success factors were supportive organizational policy, staff participation, availability of time and resources for the improvement of the software process, consultations with the SIPA and team commitment and recognition. The barrier factors were time constraints, lack of experience, documentation load, unsynchronized means of communication and improper project selection. The findings were based on four diverse organizations. Other countries may take into account the variations e.g. working culture or organizational structure when seeking to apply these results.

This qualitative case study presents the reflections of ten Chinese and Taiwanese Americans on their experiences in community-based Chinese Heritage Schools (CHS) in Houston, Texas. Five themes emerged from the in-depth interviews with the participants: (1) self-perceptions of being Chinese/Taiwanese Americans, (2) motivations for learning Chinese, (3) key learning experiences at CHS, (4) perspectives on CHS, and (5) suggestions proposed by the participants.

This qualitative case study investigated the lived spiritual experiences of participants who attend a Five Weeks seminar about holistic and end of life (EOL) care decisions. Auditaped, semistructured interviews recorded participants’ responses. Content analysis was the central technique used to identify themes. Four themes emerged. These included perspectives, life after death, reflective insights, and rituals. Implications and recommendations are included for caring practices related to EOL care and spiritual support.

Introduction The role of midwives has changed in providing care for low-risk pregnancies and childbirth. This study explores the perceptions of perinatal care providers and recipients regarding midwifery services. Methods This study used a qualitative content analysis approach. Data were collected through 49 semi-structured in-depth interviews, and analysed with qualitative content analysis. Results The medicalisation of pregnancy and childbirth has marginalised midwifery. Midwifery, which should be at the heart of all low-risk pregnancies and childbirth, has deteriorated such that it has become disempowered in interdisciplinary relations. Conclusions Midwifery is at risk of being totally excluded from low-risk pregnancy care and childbirth.
