This qualitative case study investigated the lived spiritual experiences of participants who attend a Five Weeks seminar about holistic and end of life (EOL) care decisions. Auditaped, semistructured interviews recorded participants’ responses. Content analysis was the central technique used to identify themes. Four themes emerged. These included perspectives, life after death, reflective insights, and rituals. Implications and recommendations are included for caring practices related to EOL care and spiritual support.

The internet has revolutionized the way people communicate, how they manage their business, and even how they conduct their studies. Organizations can conduct meetings virtually and store all their data online. With this convenience, however, comes the risk of cybercrime (CC). Some of the world's most renowned organizations have found themselves having to incur huge recovery costs after falling prey to CC. Higher learning institutions' databases are increasingly falling victim to CCs, owing to the vast amounts of personal and research data they harbor. Despite this, the area of CCs in learning institutions remains understudied. This chapter seeks to identify how CC is manifested in such institutions and the specific cybersecurity measures that stakeholders could use to minimize their exposure to the same. The qualitative case study was designed to explore the research questions, and collected data through semistructured interviews. The findings showed hacking, phishing, and spoofing as the most common manifestations of cybercrime in higher learning institutions.

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore children with disabilities’ social relationships and motivation to take part in sledge hockey. Harter’s (1978) theory of Competence Motivation was used as the conceptual framework. Ten children (1 girl and 9 boys) between ages 11–16 years, who experienced a range of disabilities, participated. Primary data were collected using semistructured interviews, participant observations, and field and reflective notes. The thematic analysis led to four themes: (a) coach feedback, (b) parental involvement, (c) skill and belonging, and (d) (dis)ability sport. The findings revealed that interactions with significant others contributed extensively to the participant’s perceptions of competence and motivation to participate, as did the sport’s competitive nature. The findings are discussed in the context of Harter’s theory and the children’s sport and adapted physical activity inclusion literature.

This article explores the tools and processes of effective learning in the design studio with a special emphasis on the pedagogic roles of the tutors and the students in desk critique and peer critique. It aims to identify the ways that pedagogical roles of the tutor and the student change due to the nature of their communication and the degree of their engagement in learning processes. The inquiry is based on the findings of a qualitative case study involving tutors, students and graduates from a bachelor of architecture degree programme. Data were gathered via focus group and in-depth interviews, studio observations and analysed through qualitative content analysis. The findings indicated that the pedagogic identity of a tutor could help scaffold the formation of a community of learners in the design studio. However, the lack of negotiation and trust between a tutor and students in the feedback processes weakens the students’ effective learning experiences.

Aim. To identify end-of-life (EOL) decision making processes for patients with non-cancer illnesses in a major metropolitan hospital. Methods. A retrospective review using a case study framework of 47 randomly selected patient records over a 6-month period explored issues in EOL care planning. Results. Reviewed charts represented 53% of total deaths in the study period. All patients (aged 66–99) had co-morbid conditions. In 64%, the first record of EOL discussions occurred in the last 24 h of life. Four case groups were identified, ranging from a clear plan developed with patient/family involvement and fully implemented, to no plan with minimal patient/family involvement in decision making. Factors related to clearer EOL care planning according to expressed patient wishes included multiple previous admissions, shorter hospitalisations at EOL, living with a relative and involvement of family in decisions about care. Conclusion. This study has shown that the development and effective implementation of EOL plans is associated with the active involvement of both family members and health professionals. It also draws attention to the risks of delaying EOL discussions until late in the illness trajectory or later in life as well as pointing to challenges in acting on EOL developed outside the hospital environment. What is known about the topic? End of life (EOL) care planning has been widely discussed in some countries but research into outcomes of such programs has produced variable results both in real outcomes for patients and in satisfaction and ease of application for health professionals. Programs of advance care planning have been introduced in some Australian health services but are yet to produce definitive results. What does this paper add? This paper identifies some of the factors that appear to impact on EOL decision making processes in a major Australian metropolitan hospital for patients suffering non-cancer life-limiting illnesses. These data will facilitate the development of more effective EOL care processes in this and other similar healthcare services. What are the implications for practitioners? Clear effective processes for making EOL decisions are likely to result in better outcomes for patients, family members and practitioners. A distinctive cluster of patient circumstances may identify risk for poor advance care planning.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to improve our understanding of how frontline employees cope with service recovery situations and recover from them. It also takes a closer look at employee empowerment. This work represents a qualitative case study, and investigates the topic from the perspective of frontline employees. Data collection is implemented by interviewing the case hotel’s frontline personnel. A content analysis method was utilised to analyse the collected data. The findings suggest that the support of colleagues is more crucial in coping with service recovery situations and recovering from them than the support of managers. Personality traits also play a role. A theoretical scheme of the service recovery process from the perspective of frontline employees is developed from the analysis of the interviews. The findings indicate that written instructions would assist employees in service recovery situations.

This case study investigated the psychological and emotional experiences of nine health care professionals who attended a Five Wishes seminar, designed to acquaint participants with thinking holistically about death. All the self-selected participants had experienced the death of a loved one and indicated they were able to discuss death issues. Data collection included interviews, observations, physical artifacts, and the Five Wishes documents. Content analysis was the central technique used to identify themes. Findings indicated participants attended the EOL seminar to share information with their colleagues and patients; the information also interested them personally. However, facing death and making EOL care decisions were difficult for the participants. The EOL seminars educated them regarding some of the mysteries and problem s of EOL care and offered them some solutions and insights bot h professionally and personally. This study has implications for educators and health care professionals: 1) EOL decisions are facilitated by the social support of group settings . 2) Reluctance about facing death can be reduced by comprehensive, lifelong education beginning in the early childhood years and culminating with holistic advanced directives such as the Five Wishes.

Hotels are water-intensive businesses, and water scarcity presents a pressing problem for managers who rely on an uninterrupted supply of water to meet guests’ needs and maintain profitability. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore strategies that hotel managers used to successfully maintain adequate water supplies in arid regions. Data were collected from semistructured interviews and hotel water usage reports from three hotels in Spanish island of Gran Canaria. This study may contribute to business practice by illuminating processes that hotel managers, employees, guests, and partners, can take to improve environmental performance and align practices with water governance.
