Moose ( L.) browsing causes severe damage in Scots pine ( L.) seedling stands. The effects of this damage on the quality of sawlogs were studied in a long-term controlled experiment. This article reports the stem size and external quality characteristics of Scots pine stems 34 years after artificial moose browsing damage. Damaging the trees by clipping the main stem at the seedling stage reduced the diameter, height, and tree volume of the trees at the end of the experiment. The tree growth reduction was dependent on the severity of clipping. The differences between the damaged and the control trees were more obvious in diameter than in height at the time of final felling. Stem form defects and vertical branches were the most typical externally detectable defects caused by clipping. Defects in the butt logs were detected in 71–89% of the damaged trees, depending on the clipping treatment severity. The stronger the clipping treatment, the more likely the stem form was defected and the more commonly were vertical branches and crooks detected in the stems. The results indicate that both tree dimensions and stem quality suffer from moose browsing. The findings of this controlled experiment more likely underestimate than overestimate the damage in comparison to real moose browsing. Further analyses are required to assess the effects of browsing damage on the internal quality of sawlogs and subsequent economic outcomes.Alces alcesPinus sylvestris

The study addresses the problem of diversification and quality of willow (Salix) cut stems. Very few ornamental willow species are currently in production for the cut-stem trade in temperate North America, and they have a relatively short annual harvest period. This study selected 20 taxa of willow with the potential for cut-stem industry based on observations of more than 150 taxa in central Ohio for 4 years. Growth and ornamental qualities of branches and inflorescences of those species, hybrids, or cultivars were measured and evaluated. The species range in hardiness from USDA zones 2 through 7, but the majority are best suited to zone 4 and 5 conditions. Specific descriptions of each species are provided, focusing on those details important for the floral industry including stem length, bark and bud colors, catkin color and quality, optimal harvest time, and the sequence of bloom among species. Stems for catkin display can be harvested and marketed from January through April. Branches used for bark and bud color displays and for stem shape have an even longer harvest period. New selections provide a greater range of stem size, catkin characteristics, bark and bud color, and prolonged harvest period, than commonly used pussy-willows.

Abstract Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) is frequently planted on former agricultural fields throughout the southeastern United States. Limited information is available on the long-term growth and yield as well as stem quality of longleaf pine growing on these sites with and without midrotation fertilization. The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the growth rates, wood yields, and stem quality of old-field longleaf pine and (2) to quantify growth improvements provided by midrotation fertilization. Study sites were established on former agricultural fields in Screven and Tift County, Georgia in unthinned longleaf pine stands planted during December 1986. Three treatments including a control, single full dose, and split dose of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium were applied prior to thinning. Assessments of diameter at breast height, height growth, volume, green weight, and basal area at both sites were conducted at ages 21, 23, 27, 30, and 32. After 32 years, results indicated no statistically significant improvements of any growth parameters compared to the control in relation to midrotation fertilization treatments, and stem defects occurred in approximately 29–35 percent of trees. The fast growth rate and low nutrient demand of longleaf pine on these sites obviate the need for midrotation fertilization.

AbstractManufacturers and laboratories might benefit from using a modern integrated tool for quality management/assurance. The tool should not be confounded by commutability issues and focus on the intrinsic analytical quality and comparability of assays as performed in routine laboratories. In addition, it should enable monitoring of long-term stability of performance, with the possibility to quasi “real-time” remedial action. Therefore, we developed the “Empower” project.The project comprises four pillars: (i) master comparisons with panels of frozen single-donation samples, (ii) monitoring of patient percentiles and (iii) internal quality control data, and (iv) conceptual and statistical education about analytical quality. In the pillars described here (i and ii), state-of-the-art as well as biologically derived specifications are used.In the 2014 master comparisons survey, 125 laboratories forming 8 peer groups participated. It showed not only good intrinsic analytical quality of assays but also assay biases/non-comparability. Although laboratory performance was mostly satisfactory, sometimes huge between-laboratory differences were observed. In patient percentile monitoring, currently, 100 laboratories participate with 182 devices. Particularly, laboratories with a high daily throughput and low patient population variation show a stable moving median in time with good between-instrument concordance. Shifts/drifts due to lot changes are sometimes revealed. There is evidence that outpatient medians mirror the calibration set-points shown in the master comparisons.The Empower project gives manufacturers and laboratories a realistic view on assay quality/comparability as well as stability of performance and/or the reasons for increased variation. Therefore, it is a modern tool for quality management/assurance toward improved patient care.

Under the background of mass entrepreneurship and innovation, improving the quality of the teaching results and accomplishing the conversion of teaching achievements are the changes for the reform and development of colleges and universities. The reform of “Studio Model” teaching is more conducive to the improvement of undergraduate teaching quality, converse to results orientation. The effective quality guarantee mechanism is the important guarantee for forming undergraduate teaching method reform. Through the discussion of the concept and method of Carnegie Mellon University and the colleges of China. This paper puts forward the teaching reformation and exploration of the “Studio Model”, Based on the idea of implementing the “effective teaching”, this paper constructs the results-oriented curriculum in a pragmatic and innovative way, designs the teaching with the design competition and the practice project as the motivation.


Jordanian tourist hotels are a booming company with a wide cultural diversity , especially in Amman. Attractive investment opportunities in these companies have attracted millions of dollars. Over 70 tourist hotels were, for example, inaugurated in Jordan in 2019. Most of Jordan's tourist hotels are locally owned in Amman and are international in nature. Hotels in Jordan use different strategies for managing human capital to attract, teach, retain and hire qualified personnel to enhance their quality of service. This paper is aimed at exploring the empirical model for internal marketing (IM) and internal quality of service (ISQ) hotels based in Jordan. In an organised and self-administered survey, target managers and employees of Jordanian hotels were chosen. A jury of 300 owners and employees participated in the interview. A variety of analyses of exploratory and confirmative factors were used to assess the scale, unidimensionality, relevance and reliability of the study systems. 'internal purchasers' (employees) have 'job expectations' which should be met to meet the requirements of external clients. The IM and ISQ components were investigated in hotels in tourist destinations. Administrators and administrators will use the study findings to improve their IM and ISQ methods to achieve practical organisational goals. This is the first study to explore the linkages between IM and ISQ in hotels. Managers may benefit from the results of their studies by designing IM and ISQ methods to achieve long-term business goals. Jordan's tourism industry now has reliable empirical evidence on the two key concepts, IM and ISQ.

Commercial quality cut-roses were produced in a single-stem production system from single-node cuttings. Single-node cuttings from cut stems of `Lady Diana' rose were characterized by the location of the node of origin in numerical sequence from the flower and initial stem size, large (thick stems, long length, many nodes), moderate (moderate thickness, moderate length, and node number), and small (generally not commercial quality). Cuttings were treated with a 5-second dip in 500 ppm IBA/250 ppm NAA solution, placed in growing media in 8-cm pots and placed under intermittent mist (5 second every 5 minutes) with growing medium temperature of 35°C. Seven sequential crops of rose cuttings were grown from Feb. through May 1995. The initial node of origin was significantly correlated to the final stem length of the single-stem rose and to the number of days for axillary budbreak on the cutting. The number of days to rooting was not effected by the initial node of origin of the cutting. The correlation with initial stem size had variable results.

Abstract Purpose: This article addresses several intervention approaches that aim to improve life for individuals with severe aphasia. Because severe aphasia significantly compromises language, often for the long term, recommended approaches focus on additional domains that affect quality of life. Treatments are discussed that involve increasing participation in personally relevant life situations, enhancing environmental support for communication and participation, and improving communicative confidence. Methods: Interventions that have been suggested in the aphasia literature as particularly appropriate for people with severe aphasia include training in total communication, training of communication partners, and activity specific training. Conclusion: Several intervention approaches can be implemented to enhance life with severe aphasia.

The organizational structure of long-term care (LTC) facilities often removes the rehab department from the interdisciplinary work culture, inhibiting the speech-language pathologist's (SLP's) communication with the facility administration and limiting the SLP's influence when implementing clinical programs. The SLP then is unable to change policy or monitor the actions of the care staff. When the SLP asks staff members to follow protocols not yet accepted by facility policy, staff may be unable to respond due to confusing or conflicting protocol. The SLP needs to involve members of the facility administration in the policy-making process in order to create successful clinical programs. The SLP must overcome communication barriers by understanding the needs of the administration to explain how staff compliance with clinical goals improves quality of care, regulatory compliance, and patient-family satisfaction, and has the potential to enhance revenue for the facility. By taking this approach, the SLP has a greater opportunity to increase safety, independence, and quality of life for patients who otherwise may not receive access to the appropriate services.
