Plants of Helichrysum genus belong to Asteraceae family and abound with species. The’re two species of plants of Helichrysum genus in the Astrakhan region – Helichrysum arenarium Moench and Hеlichrisum nogaicum Zvelev that was discovered later and isn’t studied well enough yet. Helichrysum arenarium is a well-known medical plant widely used in both academic and traditional medicine and included into the State Pharmacopoeia. Inflorescences of Helichrysum arenarium produce cholagogic, hemostatic, detoxicating, laxative, anti-inflammatory and diuretic effects, which is due to content of flavonoids, terpenoids and other components. This works shows results of studies of chemical composition of extracted essential oils of Hеlichrisum nogaicum and Helichrysum arenarium growing in the Astrakhan Region. Samples of essential oils of plants under studies have been obtained by steam distillation. Optimal steam distillation process duration has been determined by experiment taking studies of dynamics of essential oil yield change through time as a ground. Quantitative analysis of main components of Helichrysum arenarium and Hеlichrisum nogaicum essential oils has been carried out by gas-liquid chromatography. It has been identified that Helichrysum arenarium essential oil contains 21 substances. Its main components are camphor (14.59%) and carboxylic acids (37.02%), and 1,8-cineole (5.97%). The main components of the oil Helichrisum nogaicum are camphor (38.33%), borneol (14.21%), cineol-1.8 (11.37%) and terpene-4-ol (5.18%), sesquiterpene compounds (6.28%), and the content of carboxylic acids is insignificant and amounts to 6.58%.

In this study, clove bud oil, which was cultivated in the Mediterranean region of Turkey, was provided from a private essential oil company in Turkey. Essential oil from clove (Syzygium aromaticum L.) was obtained from steam-distillation method, and its chemical composition was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The results showed that the essential oils mainly contained about 87.00% eugenol, 8.01% eugenyl acetate and 3.56% β-Caryophyllene. The chemical composition of the Turkish clove bud oil was comparable to those of trees naturally grown in their native regions.

The chemical composition of the essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from the aerial parts of Thymus serpyllum and Thymus serpyllum‘Aureus’ has been investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Forty-seven compounds (99.67% of the total oil) wereidentified in the essential oil of T. serpyllum. The main components found in the oil were carvacrol (37.49%), -terpinene (10.79%), -caryophyllene (6.51%), p-cymene (6.06%), (E)--ocimene (4.63%) and -bisabolene (4.51%). Similarly, carvacrol (44.93%), -terpinene(10.08%), p-cymene (7.39%) and -caryophyllene (6.77%) dominated in the oil of T. serpyllum ‘Aureus’. A total of forty three compounds wereidentified in this oil, representing 99.49% of the total oil content. On the basis of the obtained data it was proved that the content of 1-octen-3-ol,eucalyptol, (Z)--ocimene, (E)--ocimene, -terpinene, carvacrol methyl ether, germacrene D and -bisabolene was significantly higher for T.serpyllum while T. serpyllum ‘Aureus’ was characterized by a significantly higher content of 3-octanone, 3-octanol, p-cymene, borneol andcarvacrol. The isolated essential oils were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against nine reference strains (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcusaureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus agalactiae, Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus cereus, Micrococcus luteus, Proteus vulgaris and Candidaalbicans) by the microdilution technique. Based on this test, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of essential oil were calculated. Thevolatile oil obtained from T. serpyllum showed the highest antimicrobial activity relative to the strain of E. coli (MIC=0.025 μL/mL) and to theyeast C. albicans (MIC=0.05 μL/mL). Similarly, a significant antimicrobial activity exhibited T. serpyllum ‘Aureus’ essential oil, although the MICvalues obtained in that case for E. coli and C. albicans strains were twice as high and were respectively 0.05 μL/mL and 0.1 μL/mL.

The effect of different hydrodistillation pretreatments, namely, reflux extraction, reflux extraction with the addition of cell wall-degrading enzymes, and ultrasound, on the yield and chemical composition of essential oils of sage, bay laurel, and rosemary was examined. All pretreatments improved essential oil yield compared to no-pretreatment control (40–64% yield increase), while the oil quality remained mostly unchanged (as shown by statistical analysis of GC-MS results). However, enzyme-assisted reflux extraction pretreatment did not significantly outperform reflux extraction (no-enzyme control), suggesting that the observed yield increase was mostly a consequence of reflux extraction and enzymatic activity had only a minute effect. Thus, we show that ultrasound and reflux extraction pretreatments are beneficial in the production of essential oils of selected Mediterranean plants, but the application of enzymes has to be carefully re-evaluated.

The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of the aerial parts of Valeriana parviflora (Trevir) BM Vadillo, an endemic species of the Venezuelan Andes, collected from the same location in two different seasons (dry and rainy) of the year, were analyzed by GC/MS. The essential oil obtained during the dry season showed linalool (11.9%), eugenol (8.9%), p-menth-1-en-9-al (8.7%) and α-terpineol (7.7%) as main components, while the oil obtained from the rainy season collection showed o-xylol (16.2%), 3-methyl isovaleric acid (10.6%) and geranial (9.5%) as major compounds. Some of the differences in the composition of these oils might be due to the climatic conditions at the time of harvesting.

“Yellow moena” (Nectandra longifolia: Lauraceae) is a fragrant leaves-possessing plant commonly used for timber purposes. Nevertheless, so far, there is not available information about its chemical composition. Thus, in the present work is described the components of the essential oil from N. longifolia leaves. The oil was extracted by steam distillation and analyzed by GC/FID  and GC/MS. Twenty eight compounds were therefore identified. The main components were found to be terpinen-4-ol (53.1%), α-terpinene (6.8%), α-phellandrene (4.5%), and β-pinene (3.8%). The chemical composition of essential oil from N. longifolia leaves was consequently in agreement to that of several neotropical Lauraceae plants. In addition, the oil exhibited good antifungal activity against F. oxysporum through dose-dependent mycelial growth inhibition (using amended media and fumigant assays).

<p><strong>Objective: </strong>In the present study, the influence of harvesting time (April, June, August and October 2015) on the essential oil composition of <em>Abies koreana</em> twigs from Korea was investigated.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>The essential oil from the twigs of <em>A. koreana</em> was isolated by steam distillation and its chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The essential oil yield was found to vary from 0.76 to 1.20% depending on the month of harvesting. The GC-MS analysis revealed the identification of 26 different essential oil components from the twigs harvested in the months of April, June, August and October, which were mostly monoterpene hydrocarbons (57.63–72.38%) followed by oxygenated monoterpenes (18.82–25.96%).<strong> </strong>Harvesting time mainly influenced on the concentration of the major components of the essential oil from the twigs of <em>A. koreana</em>. Limonene (17.38–31.13%), bornyl acetate (13.22–21.17%), camphene (12.56–13.26%), α-pinene (11.05–13.02%), β-pinene (4.55–5.70%), 3-carene (5.21–6.43%) and β-eudesmol (1.49–8.24%) were detected as the major components in the essential oil.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>The main differences between the essential oil compositions of four different months can be referred to limonene and bornyl acetate. The results showed considerable variations in the composition of essential oil, particularly quantitative variation during different harvesting months.</p>

Abstract. Souhila B, Takia L, Messaoud R, Pierre C, Gilles F. 2019. Chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oils of Thymelaea hirsuta from Algeria. Biodiversitas 20: 2868-2876. The objectives of this study were to determine the chemical composition and to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Thymelaea hirsuta (L.) Endl., essential oils from seven sampling locations in M'sila region (Algeria). Extraction of essential oils was carried out by the hydro-distillation; the analysis of chemical composition of essential oil was carried out by GC-MS. Antimicrobial activity was performed by disc diffusion method at the essential oil concentration of non-diluted and diluted (1:2, 1:4 and 1:8 v:v of DMSO) against eight species of bacteria. The results showed that the average yields of essential oils were 0.3 ± 0.12%. A total of 45 components were identified, averaging 98.2 ± 1.85% of the total oils. The main components were nonanal-n (10.39 ± 3.21%), hexadecanoic acid (9.77 ± 2.81%), nonanoic acid (9.13 ± 6.49%), triacontane (7.2 ± 3.34%), isopropyl tetradecanoate (6.16 ± 1.99%) and tridecane (4.87 ± 3.1%). Based on the UPGMA cluster analysis, there were two clades of T. hirsuta. T. hirusta has a chemical polymorphism with different chemotypes marked in nature. There were four chemotypes identified in the essential oil of T. hirsuta in the region of M'sila. The essential oil of T. hirsuta has antibacterial activity against eight tested bacteria on the concentration-dependentt manner.

The essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation method from plants of three varieties Agastache aurantiaca, cultivated on the Republic of Belarus were investigated. Some morphobiometric parameters of plants 'Tango', 'Apricot Sprite' and 'Fragrant Delight' and oil yields were determined. Using the technique of gas-liquid chromatography essential oil components were identified and determined. The main components of the essential oil from 'Tango' and 'Fragrant Delight' plants were menton (~ 53 and ~ 65 v/v % respectively) and pulegon (~ 36 and ~ 25 v/v % respectively). The samples of 'Apricot' Sprite' essential oil were rich in isomentone (~ 46 v/v %) and pulegon (~ 41 v/v %). All tested essential oils contained (+)-menton and (+)-pulegon enantiomeric forms only. The antibacterial activity of dimethylsulfoxide and ethanolic essential oil solutions against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella alony, Bacillus subtilis, Clostridium sp., Escherichia coli Hfr H, Pseudomonas aeruginosa was proved. Ethanol solutions of essential oils at the concentrations 0.001–0.1 v/v % had significant bactericidal activity. A correlation between the composition of the essential oil and their antibacterial properties was established.

The chemical composition of Prangos odontalgica (Pall.) Herrnst. et. Heyn essential oil, which grows wild in the Astrakhan region, has not been practically studied, unlike other species of the genus Prangos, growing in Iran, Turkey and Uzbekistan. To obtain the essential oil, all parts of the plant (roots, stems, flowers, leaves, fruits) are used, as well as various methods of isolation (hydrodistillation, supercritical fluid extraction, solid-phase microextraction, and others). Essential oil from the fruit of Prangos odontalgica we obtained by the method of hydrodistillation. The duration of the hydrodistillation process, established experimentally on the basis of a study of the dynamics of change in the yield of essential oil over time, was 3 hours. The yield of essential oil in mass% by volume in terms of absolutely dry raw materials according to the results of a threefold determination is 0.07 ± 0.01%. The method of gas-liquid chromatography carried out a quantitative analysis of the main components of the essential oil Prangos odontalgica. The quantitative content of the components of the essential oil was calculated by the areas of gas chromatographic peaks without the use of correction factors. Qualitative analysis was performed by comparing linear retention indices. In the Prangos odontalgica essential oil, 38 substances were identified (88.4%). It contains sesquiterpenes (31.48%), terpenoids (19.2%), hydrocarbons (15.39%), carboxylic acids and their esters (10.86%), alcohols, phenols (8.84%). Among sesquiterpenes, the predominant components are γ-elemen (9.84%), bisabolol (9.41%), and among terpenoids – trans-nerolidol (3.90%) and linalyl isobutyrate (3.41%).

The steam distillation method was used to obtain samples of essential oil of some species of genus Agastache L. introduced in Belarus. More than 20 components have been identified and determined in the essential oils of Agastache pallidiflora ssp.neomexicana L., Agastache aurantiaca L., Agastache mexicana L., Agastache foeniculum L. by gas liquid chromatography.The quantitative composition of the samples of essential oils depends on the type of plant material. The main its components are limonene, 1.8-cineol, mentone, isomentone, methyl chavicol, methyeugenol. The main component of essential oils Agastache pallidiflora ssp. neomexicana L. и Agastache aurantiaca L is mentone (40–65 %). Essential oil Agastache foeniculum L. is enriched with pulegone and isomentone. Methyl chavicol and methyleugenol dominate in Agastache mexicana essential oil. Distribution of the enantiomers of limonene, menthone and pulegone are shown. Regardless of the plant species, the samples are optically pure in the (+)-pulegone. The nature of the distribution of the enantiomers of limonene and menthone is an individual characteristic of the studied Agastache L. essential oils.
