This work studied the synthetization and morphological characterization of Polyethylmethacrylate (PEMA) nanofibers (NFs) containing titanium dioxide (TiO2) produced by the electrospinning technique. The solution to produce the nanofibers was prepared by dissolving 2.5g PEMA in 6.75mL of 1.1.2.2- tetrachloroethane and 3.375mL of dimethylformamide (DMF), and 0.405g of TiO2 was added to the solution. The nanofiber production used different distances between the tip of the needle to the collector (10, 12 and 15 cm) and two flow rates (0.05 mLh-1 and 0.08 mLh-1) were employed, while the applied voltage was 17kV. The NF morphology was analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Image J software. We used Fourier Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) to evaluate the structural properties. All parameters were effective in the NF production, however it was shown that the distance of 12 cm produced the best NFs. The mean diameters showed no statistically significant difference between the samples. The FTIR analysis showed characteristic peaks of PEMA and TiO2. It was concluded that the employed method was efficient for NF production containing PEMA and TiO2,and the morphological characteristics of the NFs were influenced by the voltage and distance. Because of the unique properties that the system TiO2-ZrO2 has, this system has attracted great interest in catalytic circles. In general, the TiO2-ZrO2 oxides composites have a greater surface area and a stronger acidity when compared to the single oxide and they are used as catalysts supports for many catalytic reactions. This work is to evaluate the effect of calcined temperature in structural and morphological characteristics of Ti1-xZrxO2nanopowders obtained by Pechini method. For this study, the doping value was 0.25 moles of Zr. The powders were calcined at temperature of 500 to 900°C for one hour. The powders were characterized by XRD, SEM and BET. The X-ray diffraction showed that the powders present a TiO2anatase phase and another of ZrO2tetragonal. The crystallite size ranged from 4.8 to 14.6 nm for the temperature of 500 to 900°C, respectively. The analysis of scanning electron microscopy showed soft homogeneous agglomerates with particles around 100 nm. The main particles sizes by BET were ranged from 10 to 20 nm, showing that the synthesis is effective to obtain nanometric powders.

This study was undertaken to investigate the integration of titanium micro-implants installed in conjunction with previously dentin-grafted areas and to study the morphological appearance, mineral content, and healing pattern of xenogenic EDTA-conditioned dentin blocks and granules grafted to cavities in the tibial bone of rabbits. Demineralized and non-demineralized dentin blocks and granules from human premolars were implanted into cavities prepared on the lateral aspects of the tibias of rabbits. After a healing period of six months, micro-implants were installed at each surgical site. Histological examinations were carried out after 24 weeks. Characterization of the EDTA-conditioned dentin blocks was performed by means of light microscopy, dental X-rays, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). No implants were found to be integrated in direct contact with the dentin particles or blocks. On the EDTA-conditioned dentin surface, the organic marker elements C and N dominated, as revealed by EDX. The hydroxyapatite constituents Ca and P were almost absent on the dentin surface. No statistically significant difference was observed between the EDTA-conditioned and non-demineralized dentin, as revealed by BIC and BA. The bone-inductive capacity of the dentin material seemed limited, although demineralization by means of EDTA indicated higher BIC and BA values in conjunction with the installed implants in the area. A 12 h EDTA treatment did not fully decalcify the grafts, as revealed by X-ray analysis.

Abstract Rotavirus was the an important causative agent of acute gastroenteritis in children. In China, rotavirus was positive in approximately 30% of the diarrhea children and become a serious public problem. This study was carried out to investigate the clinical and molecular epidemic characterization of rotavirus infection among children under 5 years old with acute diarrhea in Shandong province, China. From July 2017 to June 2018, a total of 1211 fecal specimens were detected and the prevalence of rotavirus infection was 32.12%. The mean age of positive children was 12.2 ± 10.9 months and the highest infection rate was observed in children aged 7–12 months with a rate of 41.64%. G9P[8] (76.61%) was the most prevalent combinations followed by G2P[4] (7.20%), G3P[8] (3.60%) and G9P[4] (2.06%). In addition to diarrhea, vomiting, fever and dehydration were the most common accompanied symptoms. In general, there was no significant difference in clinical manifestations among different age groups. However, the clinical manifestations between vaccinated and unvaccinated children were significantly different. Vaccinated children showed lower incidence and frequency of vomiting, lower incidence and degree of dehydration, lower incidence of severe cases than unvaccinated children. The findings suggested necessary to continue rotavirus strains surveillance in order to monitor the change of prevalent genotype. Moreover, introducing vaccine into national immunization program to prevent and control rotavirus infections is needed in China.

AbstractIn this work, aluminate type phosphorescence materials were synthesized via the solid state reaction method and the photoluminescence (PL) properties, including excitation and emission bands, were investigated considering the effect of trace amounts of activator (Eu3+) and co-activator (Dy3+). The estimated thermal behavior of the samples at certain temperatures (> 1000 °C) during heat treatment was characterized by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetry (TG). The possible phase formation was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The morphological characterization of the samples was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The PL analysis of three samples showed maximum emission bands at around 610 nm, and additionally near 589 nm, 648 nm and 695 nm. The bands were attributed to typical transitions of the Eu3+ ions.

AbstractPreferential growth of anatase crystallites along different directions is known to deeply affect their photocatalytic properties, especially with respect to the exposure of the reactive {001} facets. Its extent can be easily quantified through simple geometric calculations, on the basis of crystal sizes extracted for specific directions by means of X-Ray Diffraction data analysis. Nevertheless, the actual results depend on the method employed for such a quantification. Here we report on a comparative morphological investigation, performed by employing the Scherrer equation and the line profile from Rietveld refinements, on shape-controlled anatase photocatalysts produced by employing HF as capping agent. Compared to the Rietveld-based method, the use of the Scherrer equation produces a systematic underestimation of crystallite dimensions, especially concerning the [100] direction, which in turn causes the percentage of exposed {001} crystal facets to be underestimated. Neglecting instrumental-related effects may further reduce the estimate.

Thalassemia is common inherited disorder among humans, and they represent a major public health problem in many areas of the world. The study aimed to the measurement of hematological characterization of beta-thalassemia in Sudanese patients. Blood samples from 61 beta-thalassemic patients were collected after written consent form obtained from all participants. The frequency of adults (>18 years) was 45 (73.8%) and children’s (<18 years) was 16 (26.2%); the frequency of male was 27 (44.3%) and 34 were female (55.7%). Hemoglobin estimation and red cell indices were carried out using the automatic blood cell counter Sysmex K × 21N. The results showed that Hb and RBCs indices were varied between mild to moderate and severe decreasing, hemoglobin concentration (Hb) with the mean value of 9.6 g/dL, with minimum value of 6.1 g/dl and maximum of 11.9 g/dl, while RBCs were increased in all patients, mean value 5.2 c/l, mean corpuscular volume mean was 58.9 fl, hematocrit was 30.4, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) 18.8 pg, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) was 31.7pg, and RDW was 18.8%. The method used for hemoglobin electrophoresis was capillary electrophoresis, Hb pattern shows increased HbA2 and HbF, the mean of HbA is 78.3%, HbF is 2.3%, and HbA2 is 6.5% with the min. value of 3.6% and max. of 12.2%. While the mean of serum iron was 82.75 μg/dl, 7 patients showed low level, 19 high level, and 35 were normal level. Comparison of hematological analysis (HbA2) in thalassemic patients coexisted with iron deficiency and without result was insignificant difference (p=0.645), this result disagrees with references that say iron deficiency masking HbA2. Nevertheless, the association between HbA2 and HbF revealed a statistically significant difference (p<0.013) and HbA2 with Hb was insignificant (p=0.260).

This paper reports the main results concerning the synthesis and characterization of methylsilane and octylsilane-modified silicas. The modification of the silicas with these groups aims to make the silica surface hydrophobic and thus compatible with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) in HDPE/silica composites. In the present work, two types of silica were organofunctionalized: a pyrogenic silica and a silica gel. The silicas were characterized by a series of complementary techniques with the objective of investigating the nature of the surface species and their textural and morphological characteristics. The SEM images showed that the modification of the silicas with organosilanes has been not resulted in changes on the morphology and on the size of silica particles. In relation to the texture properties, determined by N2 adsorption-desorption porosimetry, the silica modification resulted in a decrease of the specific area (SBET) and the mean pore volume, a behavior attributed to the partial coverage of the adsorption sites by the organosilane molecules. The TGA analysis showed that both the methylsilane groups and the octylsilane groups on the surface of silica and silica gel are thermally stable up to 200 ° C, which enables the organofunctionalized silicas in terms of thermal stability, for the process of preparing the composites by extrusion. The results of applying these organofunctionalized silicas in the development of HDPE/silica composites will be presented in a subsequent article, part II of this research.
