Aim of this work was to study flow boiling in an annular channel at low pressure and low flow on a tube with modified surface roughness. The tube with the outer diameter of 9.14 mm and the heated length of 380 mm was made of Inconel 625 and was manually modified using 150 grit sandpaper. The tube was placed in a glass tube with an inner diameter of 14.8 mm. Outlet pressure was set to 120, 200 and 300 kPa with varying mass flow from 400 to 600 kg/(m2.s). A high speed camera was used to record several experiments to fully understand ongoing phenomena. Surface roughness was analysed using a confocal laser microscope and the effects of different mass flux and pressure on the CHF value were observed. Above all, the optimization of the flow parameters was done from the collected data and from the observed behaviour of the experimental loop.

Steady state flow boiling experiments were conducted on a technically smooth Inconel 625 tube with outer diameter 9.1 mm at inlet pressures 131, 220 and 323 kPa, inlet temperatures 62, 78 and 94 °C and approximately 400, 600 and 1000 kg/(m2.s) mass flow. Water of these parameters was entering into the vertically aligned annulus, where the uniformly heated tube was placed until the critical heat flux (CHF) appeared. The experimental data were compared to estimations of CHF by local PGT tube correlation and Groeneveld’s look-up tables for tubes. The results imply that in the region of low pressure and low mass flux, the differences between calculations and experiments are substantial (more than 50 % of CHF). The calculations further imply that look-up tables and tube correlations should be corrected to the annulus geometry. Here, the Doerffer’s approach was chosen and led to a substantial enhancement of CHF estimation. Yet, a new correlation for the region of low pressure and flow is needed.

Steady state flow boiling experiments were carried out on several heated tubes with outer diameter 9.14 mm at outlet pressures 120, 200 and 300 kPa, inlet temperatures 64, 78 and 91 °C and approximately 400, 500, 600 and 800 kg/(m2·s) mass flux entering the vertically aligned test annulus until critical heat flux (CHF) was reached. The tubes were made of Inconel 625 with a length of 400 mm. The Inconel tubes were tested in three different modifications as smooth, abraded with 150 grit sandpaper and bead blasted. Multiple experiments were repeated on the same specimen to investigate the effect of surface characteristic changes (i.e., wettability, roughness and oxide layer morphology) on the occurrence of CHF. Despite the changes in initial wettability, the CHF dependency was not clearly observed, however, the changes in roughness led to an increase in CHF. The total number of 115 experimental runs were collected and the results were also compared with other literature experimental data.

Understanding the quench front propagation during bottom core reflooding is crucial for the effective cooling during the LOCA accident. The results presented in this paper were obtained on an experimental loop with an annular test section. The test section consists of a vertical electrically heated stainless steel tube with outer diameter 9 mm and length of 1.7 m. The heated tube is placed inside a glass tube with the inner diameter 14.5 mm. Water mass flux during the reflooding is in the range from 100 kg.m<sup>−2</sup>.s<sup>−1</sup> up to 140 kg.m<sup>−2</sup>.s<sup>−1</sup> and the initial wall temperature of the stainless steel tube is in the range from 250 °C up to 800 °C. The presented results show the influence of the initial conditions on the quench front propagation and the complexity of the phenomenon.

Centrifugal compressor plays a vital role in the performance of a turbocharger. The compressor contains an impeller and housing, including the vaneless diffuser and a volute. The high-speed flow from the impeller is diffused in the diffuser and volute, before being delivered to the engine. Hence, the housing flow characteristics affect the compressor performance and operating range. Generally, housing has noticeable surface roughness, especially in the volute. This study evaluates the effect of the volute surface roughness on the compressor performance by experimental and numerical analysis. The experiments are conducted for three different volute surface roughness levels to measure the overall compressor pressure ratio and efficiency. The uncertainty in the efficiency for experimental results is within ±0.5% pts. Also, steady-state numerical simulations are performed to analyse the flow mechanisms causing pressure losses. Then, a numerical analysis is done to understand the effect of roughness of the diffuser hub and shroud walls on the compressor performance. From the experimental results, it is found that the increase in the roughness level of the volute from the smooth surface by circa 900% and 1400% shows a significant reduction in the compressor efficiency at the design speed (N) and off-design speeds (0.87 and 1.13 N). The reductions of efficiency are about 0.5%–1% pts at the near surge point, 1%–1.5% pts at the peak efficiency point and 2%–2.5% pts at the near choke flow point. The CFD analyses show significantly higher near-wall turbulence and wall shear resulting in additional pressure losses. Also, it is found that the pressure losses are more sensitive to roughness of the diffuser shroud-wall than that of the hub-wall. On the other hand, the diffuser hub-wall roughness increases the radial momentum in the diffuser passage which suppress the flow separation at low flow rates.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a new process technology using the cavitation phenomenon, mainly a water-jet shock microforming, for the fabrication of a metallic foil. 304 stainless steel was exposed to a high-speed submerged water jet with different incident pressures and certain working conditions. In this experiment, a KEYENCE VHX-1000C digital microscope, confocal laser-scanning microscope (Axio CSM 700), and micro-Vickers hardness tester were utilized to observe the forming depth, surface quality, thickness distribution, and section hardness distributions under different incident pressures. The experimental results indicated that the surface morphology of the metal foils attained good geometrical features under this dynamic microforming method and there were no cracks or fracture. The forming depth and surface roughness increased with the incident pressure. In addition, the forming depth increased from 124.7 μm to 327.8 μm, while the surface roughness also increased from 0.685 μm to 1.159 μm at an incident pressure of 8 MPa to 20 MPa. Maximum thickness thinning of the formed foils occurred at the fillet region when the thickness thinning ratio was 21.27% under the incident pressure of 20 MPa, and there was no fracture at the bottom or the fillet region. The tested hardness indicated that during the cold-rolled state of the sample, the hardness sample increased slightly along the cross section of the formed region and the hardness of the annealed 304 stainless steel foils increased significantly along the cross-sectional region.

The study discusses experiments on ethanol flow boiling in mini-channels. Pre-set thermal and flow parameters (pressure and temperature at the inlet, mass flux, the heat flux delivered to the heater) and temperature, pressure and void fraction measurements obtained in the experiment provided data for further simulation computations. On the basis of high-speed camera images, void fraction in the mini-channel was determined. Thermograms of the heater surface and the surface in the adiabatic part of the mini-channel allowed producing temperature profiles along the channel length. The read and computed parameters satisfy the expected dependences (especially that for void fraction as a function of volume flux and heat flux). Those were used to solve inverse heat conduction problems.

Discharge Machining is a non-traditional machining technique and usually applied for hard metals and complex shapes that difficult to machining in the traditional cutting process. This process depends on different parameters that can affect the material removal rate and surface roughness. The electrode material is one of the important parameters in Electro –Discharge Machining (EDM). In this paper, the experimental work carried out by using a composite material electrode and the workpiece material from a high-speed steel plate. The cutting conditions: current (10 Amps, 12 Amps, 14 Amps), pulse on time (100 µs, 150 µs, 200 µs), pulse off time 25 µs, casting technique has been carried out to prepare the composite electrodes copper-sliver. The experimental results showed that Copper-Sliver (weight ratio70:30) gives better results than commonly electrode copper, Material Removal Rate (MRR) Copper-Sliver composite electrode reach to 0.225 gm/min higher than the pure Copper electrode. The lower value of the tool wear rate achieved with the composite electrode is 0.0001 gm/min. The surface roughness of the workpiece improved with a composite electrode compared with the pure electrode.

This research proposes a new application of 3-axis CNC milling machine for polishing the 60 HRC hardness steels. The rotary polishing tools are designed by refer to the end-mill ball nose’s design. The diamond powder are coated in rotary polishing tools by resinoid bonding method and concentrated in 4.4 karat/cm2. The Zig-milling tool paths are used to polish the hardness steel. After polishing, the confocal laser scanning microscope is used to analyze the arithmetic mean surface roughness of the hardness steels. The L12 orthogonal array of the Taguchi’s method is selected to conduct the matrix experiment to determine the optimal polishing process parameters. The diamond grit size and cutting speed of the rotary polishing tools, feed rate and step over of the tool path, the depth of polishing process penetration, and polishing time are used to study. The combination of the optimal level for each factor of the hardness steel polishing process are used to study again in the confirmation experiment. The predicted signal to noise ratio of smaller - the better under optimal condition are calculated by using the data from the experiment. The combination of the optimal level for each factor are used to study again in the confirmation experiment and the result show that polishing time was a dominant parameter for the surface roughness and the next was depth of penetration. The response surface design is then used to build the relationship between the input parameters and output responses. The experimental results show that the integrated approach does indeed find the optimal parameters that result in very good output responses in the rotary polishing tools polished hardness mould steel using CNC milling machine. The mean surface roughness of hardness steel polishing process is improved by the diamond rotary tools with the 3-axis CNC milling machine.

Surface sealants are reported to ensure surface smoothness and improve the surface quality of composite restorations. These sealants should also reduce the bacterial adhesion on composite surfaces however, there is not much information regarding their performance on bulk-fill composite materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface sealant application on surface roughness and bacterial adhesion of various restorative materials. Disc-shaped samples were prepared from a compomer, a conventional composite and three bulk-fill composites. Specimens of each group were divided into two groups (n = 9): with/without surface sealant (Biscover LV, [BLV]). Surface roughness values were examined by profilometry and two samples of each group were examined for bacterial adhesion on a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). Bacterial counts were calculated by both broth cultivation and microscopic images. Results were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni/Dunn tests. Following the BLV application, there was a decrease in the surface roughness values of all groups however, only Tetric N-Ceram Bulk and Beautifil-Bulk groups showed significantly smoother surfaces (p < 0.001). There were no significant differences among material groups without BLV application. Evaluating bacterial adhesion after BLV application, conventional composite had the lowest values among all followed by the compomer group. Beautifil-Bulk had significantly the highest bacterial adhesion (p < 0.05), followed by Tetric N-Ceram Bulk group. Without BLV application, there was no significant difference among bacterial adhesion values of groups (p > 0.05). CLSM images showed cell viability in groups. Bulk-fill composites showed higher bacterial adhesion than conventional composite and compomer materials. The surface sealant was found to be highly effective in lowering bacterial adhesion, but not so superior in smoothing the surfaces of restorative materials. So, surface sealants could be used on the restorations of patients with high caries risk.
