In the present work, Al380 Al alloy and B4C metal matrix composite was fabricated with different weight fractions (1%,2% and 3%) using compo-casting method. The wear properties of fabricated composite is tested by pin on disc apparatus. On different loads of 30N,60N and 90N the wear tests are performed. The mechanical properties of hardness and tensile strength are performed on brinell’s hardness apparatus and Ultimate tensile machine. The study of homogeneous distribution of B4C particles were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) in the composites. The result shows that the Al380 Al alloy reinforced with B4C particles, that composite improves the mechanical properties and wear rate. Increasing of wear rate with the increase in B4C particles in composites. Using Opti- cal microscope, the study of worn surfaces of pins were analyzed.

In this study, mechanical and wear properties of unreinforced 2024 Al alloy and composites with different vol.% of coated and uncoated boron carbide particles were experimentally investigated. It is seen that incorporation of hard particles to 2024 aluminium alloy contributes to the improvement of the mechanical properties and wear resistance of the base alloy to a great extent. Hard particles take part in resisting penetration, cutting, and grinding by the abrasive and protect the surface. It is noted that the increase in the weight fraction of B4C particles improves the wear resistance of the composites. Based on the weight loss data, composites with 30 vol.% B4C particles have the highest wear resistance among all the tested samples and unreinforced aluminium alloys give the lowest wear resistance. The results show that TiB2 coating of the B4C particles improved the mechanical properties. It is observed that the weight losses of the coated composites are less than those of the composites without coating.


The effect of cryogenic treatment on the wear resistance of aluminium alloy LM 25, LM25+5 % fly ash and LM25+10% fly ash composites, which are synthesized by squeeze casting method, was investigated. The impact of the parameters on the wear resistance was studied under two different cryogenic soaking periods [0hrs (untreated), 12hrs and 24 hrs.] and three different load and sliding velocities with the help of pin-on-disc test rig. The wear tests were performed according to Taguchi’s approach. The percentage contribution of the cryogenic soaking period was determined by means of analysis of variance. The load was found to be more significant than cryogenic soaking period and velocity on wear loss of the composites. Regression model was generated to envisage the wear loss.

The main aims of this study is to produce copper reinforced metal matrix composite (MMC) using micron sized chromium particles via friction stir processing (FSP) in order to studying effects of adding Cr particles to copper based matrix by FSP.Microstructures, microhardness and wear properties have been studied in order to evaluate the microstructures and mechanical properties of fabricated composites. the microstructure properties are evaluated by optical microscopy (OM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The mechanical behaviors of the samples are determined by microhardness and wear tests. The results showed that the grain size of fabricated composite reduced. also it is indicated that in comparison to base copper microhardness of FSPed composites in stir zone (SZ) have been increased significantly. the results of wear test showed that in comparison with specimen with traverse speed of 80 mm/min , higher traverse speed of 160 mm/min increase wear rate of cylindrical pins.

This study focuses on the properties and process parameters dictating behavioural aspects of friction stir welded Aluminium Alloy AA6061 metal matrix composites reinforced with varying percentages of SiC and B4C. The joint properties in terms of mechanical strength, microstructural integrity and quality were examined. The weld reveals grain refinement and uniform distribution of reinforced particles in the joint region leading to improved strength compared to other joints of varying base material compositions. The tensile properties of the friction stir welded Al-MMCs improved after reinforcement with SiC and B4C. The maximum ultimate tensile stress was around 172.8 ± 1.9 MPa for composite with 10% SiC and 3% B4C reinforcement. The percentage elongation decreased as the percentage of SiC decreases and B4C increases. The hardness of the Al-MMCs improved considerably by adding reinforcement and subsequent thermal action during the FSW process, indicating an optimal increase as it eliminates brittleness. It was seen that higher SiC content contributes to higher strength, improved wear properties and hardness. The wear rate was as high as 12 ± 0.9 g/s for 10% SiC reinforcement and 30 N load. The wear rate reduced for lower values of load and increased with B4C reinforcement. The microstructural examination at the joints reveals the flow of plasticized metal from advancing to the retreating side. The formation of onion rings in the weld zone was due to the cylindrical FSW rotating tool material impression during the stirring action. Alterations in chemical properties are negligible, thereby retaining the original characteristics of the materials post welding. No major cracks or pores were observed during the non-destructive testing process that established good quality of the weld. The results are indicated improvement in mechanical and microstructural properties of the weld.

The o-rings in ball retained overdentures deteriorate with time and need replacement to restore the retentive quality. We evaluated retrospectively the mechanical properties of o-rings after 3 years in function in one and two-piece implant-supported overdentures. The o-rings were retrieved from one-piece (Myriad snap, Equinox-Straumann, 3.3 x 13mm) and two-piece (Neo Biotech, 3.3 x 13mm) implant-supported overdenture patients. A total of 16 pairs of matrices were tested for wear, type of damage and elasticity using Pin on Disc method, USB Digital Camera in 30x zoom and Universal Tensile Machine respectively. The statistical analysis for independent groups were done with the Mann-Whitney U test. Assessment of used O-rings showed 84% more wear in the two-piece system with an abrasive type of damage while 46% wear in the one-piece system with a compressive type of damage. The o-rings in one-piece system showed increase in elongation and maximum displacement to 2% and 7% respectively, while two-piece system showed decrease in elongation and maximum displacement by 13% and 6% respectively. In one-piece system, the loss of retention was more with slow wear rate and in two-piece system, the wear resistance of O-rings decreased due to increased stiffness. Further studies to evaluate the changes in O-ring with increased sample size and at interval 1 year will pave way for insight into the progressive changes in the mechanical properties of an O-ring.

AbstractThe effects of micro and nano sized reinforcement particles on microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminium alloy-based metal matrix composites were investigated in this study. AlSi9Cu3 alloy was reinforced with micro and nano sized ceramic reinforcement particles at different weight fractions by using a stir casting method. The mechanical tests (hardness, three point bending) were performed to determine the mechanical properties of AlSi9Cu3 alloy-based microcomposites (AMMCs) and nanocomposites (AMMNCs). The experimental results have shown that the size and weight fraction of reinforcement particles have a strong influence on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of AlSi9Cu3 alloy-based microcomposites and nanocomposites. The relative densities of all AMMC and AMMNC samples are lower than unreinforced AlSi9Cu3 alloy due to porosity formation with the increase of weight fraction of reinforcement particles. As weight fraction increases, hardness values of AMMCs and AMMNCs increase. Maximum flexural strength can be obtained at 3.5wt.% for the AMMC sample with microsized Al2O3 particles and at 2wt.% for the AMMNC sample with nano-sized Al2O3 particles. After the weight fractions exceed these values, flexural strengths of both AMMCs and AMMNCs decrease due to clustering of Al2O3 particles.

It is well known that the addition of ceramic phases in an alloy e.g. aluminum, in form of fibers or particles influences its mechanical properties. This leads to a new generation of materials, which are called metal matrix composites (MMCs). They have found a lot of application during the last twenty-five years due to their low density, high strength and toughness, good fatigue and wear resistance. Aluminum matrix composites reinforced by ceramic particles are well known for their good thermophysical and mechanical properties. As a result, during the last years, there has been a considerable interest in using aluminum metal matrix composites in the automobile industry. Automobile industry use aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced with SiC or Al2O3 particles for the production of pistons, brake rotors, calipers and liners. However, no reference could be cited in the international literature concerning aluminum reinforced with TiB particles and Fe and Cr, although these composites are very promising for improving the mechanical properties of this metal without significantly alter its corrosion behavior. Several processing techniques have been developed for the production of reinforced aluminum alloys. This paper is concerned with the study of TiB, Fe and Cr reinforced aluminum produced by the stir-casting method.

Aluminum alloy is widely used in automotive, aerospace and other engineering industries because of its excellent mechanical properties. The main objective is to enhance 6061 Al alloy’s mechanical properties by producing 6061-B4C composite through squeeze casting process. Experimentation was carried out with different micron sizes and weight fraction of B4C particles. The mechanical properties of reinforced metal matrix were experimentally investigated in terms of Ultimate Tensile Strength and Hardness. We observe that these two properties are improved by the reinforcement of B4C particles and applied squeeze pressure.

In present work, Aluminium 6061 was reinforced by varying the percentage of sugarcanebagasse ash (SCBA). Al-SCBA composite samples were fabricated by stir casting method. The weartest conducted on the samples using a pin on disc machine under the normal sliding condition. Basedon the testing parameters (Volume fraction ‘V’, Load ‘L’, sliding speed ‘S’) an L27 Orthogonal arraydesign was selected. According to L27 array, the wear & friction test was conducted. variance analysis(ANOVA) was performed to find out the important parameter and contribution in percentage for eachparameter on the composite material. To verify the analysis results with experimented resultconfirmation test was carried out. Further, to find the wear mechanism on the composite sampleselectron microscopy (SEM) test was used.
