Warburgia ugandensis Sprague is one of the medicinal plants traditionally used to treat a number of diseases like asthma, cough, diarrhea, common cold, stomachache and toothache in Ethiopia. However, there is still insufficient information on the isolation and evaluation of bioactive compounds from this plant species. Extraction, purification and isolation of the stem bark of this plant by dichloromethane and chloroform as solvents afforded two sesquiterpenes; namely, WU-1 (ugandensidial) and WU-2 (cinnamolide-3β-acetate) respectively. The structural elucidations of these bioactive compounds were accomplished by using a variety of spectroscopic methods (IR, UV and NMR). The spectroscopic results compared with the reported data in the literature.

This paper presents the chemical investigation of the stem barks of Glochidion lanceolarium (Roxb.) Voigt, Euphorbiaceae. Classic phytochemical investigation of organic extracts of the aerial parts of Glochidion lanceolarium together with spectroscopic methods led to the isolation and characterization of three triterpenes, namely Epilupeol (1) Glochidonol (2), Glochidone (3). Present study aims to explore the ethnobotanical information on medicinal plants used by Magar community of Badagaun VDC of Gulmi district. The study was carried out during different periods of the year 2010. Informations on plant and plant parts uses were collected interviewing key informants by using semi-structured open-ended questionnaire. Altogether 161 different plant species belonging to 87 familes and 144 genera were documented and majority of them are herbs. In terms of plant parts use, leaf and stem/bark are in top priorities. These plants are used to treat different ailments ranging from gastro-intestinal to headache and fever, respiratory tract related problems to dermatological problems, snake bite to ophthalmic and cuts and wounds. Easy access to modern medicines and less recognition of traditional healers are the main causes leading to decrease in interest of young generation in the use of traditional medicinal practices. Sonneratia apetala (S. apetala) (Lythraceae) has been investigated for the isolation and characterization of antimicrobial compounds and evaluation of their biological activities. The chloroform extract of the stem bark and different partitionate of the chloroform extracts i.e. Petroleum ether soluble fraction (PESF), Ethyl acetate soluble fraction(EASF), Methanol soluble fraction(MSF) and aqueous soluble fractions (ASF) were subjected to different chromatographic techniques to isolate secondary metabolites. Successive chromatographic separation and purification yielded a total of two compounds identified and characterized as Taraxerone(1) and 5,8-dihydroxy- 6-methoxy-4,9-dioxo-1,3,4,9-tetrahydronaphthol[2,3-c]furan-1-yl acetate (2) by extensive proton NMR spectrum (1H-NMRspectrum) analysis. The different partitionate like PESF, EASF, MESF and ASF were subjected to screen their antimicrobial properties against some selected Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria and fungi, brine shrimp lethality and antioxidant activities. The maximum zone of inhibition of chloroform extract was found against Pseudomonas sp. (16mm). All fractions showed more activity against Gram negative bacteria then Gram positive bacteria. In the brine shrimp lethality bioassay, among all extracts, the petroleum ether and ethyl acetate soluble fraction showed significant lethality having the LC50 value of 7.72 μg/ml. The antioxidant activity was evaluated in terms of determination of free radical scavenging activity (DPPH assay). Among all the extracts of S. apetala the highest free radical scavenging activity showed by (Methanol soluble fraction) MESF with IC50 value 18.0 μg/ml. The effects of weakly coordinating anions, BF 4, AsF 6 and SbF 6, as axial ligands on the formation and coordination chemistry of heme analogues have been examined. Three new five-coordinate and stable iron(III) heme analogues, OEPFeX , where OEP is the dianion of octaethylporphyrin and X = BF 4, AsF 6 and SbF 6, have been isolated. The compounds have been characterized by different spectroscopic methods as well as elemental analysis. 1 H NMR spectroscopy and magnetic moment measurements show that the OEPFeX are paramagnetic and iron is five-coordinate. In addition, monoimidazole ferric-porphyrin complex, OEPFe ( Im )( SbF 6) has been prepared in solution, by starting with OEPFe ( SbF 6). The electrochemical properties of OEPFeX ( X = BF 4, AsF 6, SbF 6) have been studied by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse polarography.
