Reading skills in elementary school are the foundation of student learning success. Unfortunately, the reading skill of elementary school students in Indonesia has a low tendency. The result of PIRLS research shows that the reading skill of fourth grade students of elementary school in Indonesia ranks 41 out of 45 countries. The results of EGRA’s research show that 50% of the 4323 third graders of elementary school in Indonesia can read, but only half of that number who really understand what is read. Based on these facts, it is required an effort to improve the reading skills of elementary school students in Indonesia. One effort that can be done to improve the reading skills of elementary school students is through DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) which means leave all the activity and read. DEAR can be used as a program of reading habit among students through routine program. Implementation of DEAR in elementary school can be done by taking a moment in the morning at about 15-30 minutes to leave all activity to read. DEAR is implemented by all school residents whether students, teachers, or employees. The reading material in DEAR is self-selected by students who match their interests and ability levels. DEAR makes students happy to read, like reading, accustomed to reading, and make reading as a requirement so as to create a culture of reading in each student either in school or at home. Through DEAR students’ reading skills will increase.

Learning science in elementary schools encourages students to understand the natural environment more deeply, rationally, and scientifically. However, often the scientific concepts they believe about science topics are not in accordance with the scientific concepts they should be. This misconception is difficult for teachers to diagnose. Special instruments to identify and analyze students' misconceptions are needed. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the misconceptions of elementary school students on the topic of energy using a four-tier diagnostic instrument. The purposed-designed survey method was used in this study. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The participants in this study were 20 fourth grade students in an elementary school in Ciamis Regency. A total of 6 questions in the form of a four-tier diagnostic instrument were used to determine the level of students' conceptions. The results showed that the students have misconceptions about the concept of energy. This can be seen from the average percentage of students' misconceptions of 66.67%. This research is expected to contribute to alternative ways to identify and analyze students' misconceptions using the four-tier diagnostic instrument. In addition, it can be used as a reference for teachers and researchers related to the problem of misconceptions of science in elementary school students

The duties and responsibilities of a teacher include creating an atmosphere or climate for the learning process that can motivate students to always study well and enthusiastically. The teacher's role is as an educator, teacher, mentor, director, trainer, assessor, and evaluator of students. Reading is a language skill that has a very important role in life. Cultured and educated humans make reading a necessity in communication. By reading students will easily get knowledge and insight from anywhere. Based on the above, it can be concluded that without good reading skills, students will not be able to understand the learning process and the material being taught. Therefore, the teacher's role is needed in improving reading skills in second grade elementary school students.

The implementation of the newest curriculum (Curriculum 2013) leads some elementary schools to finally exclude English from the schools subjects. However, some elementary schools that keep teaching English as a subject still cannot provide appropriate English teaching media, especially to teach vocabulary. In this study, the researchers aimed to know the problems faced by the English teacher and the fourth grade students of SD N 2 Sekaran in the vocabulary teaching and learning, and also to know how to develop teaching media of Kangaroo Smart Frieze. The Research and Development (R & D) approach was adopted by conducting the preliminary survey, designing and developing the prototype of the product, conducting limited testing and product validation, having a revision process and describing the research result. The subjects of the study were the fourth grade students of SDN 2 Sekaran in the academic year of 2013/2014. The instruments used were questionnaires, interview guideline and test. According to the interview to the English teacher and students, it can be concluded that the vocabulary teaching media of Kangaroo Smart frieze needs to be developed with the focus on the quality of the media and also the variety of games played. The development of Kangaroo Smart Frieze was started by observing and interviewing the English teacher and students. After doing that, the process was continued by planning the data collecting instrument of vocabulary teaching media. The main consideration was based on the English curriculum (syllabus) of the fourth grade students of elementary school and also some related theories. Moreover, the data collecting instrument was arranged into two main parts which included the need analysis of the students and English teacher. The further step was designing the prototype. The development process was then followed by other steps; product validation, try-out (limited testing) and revision of Kangaroo Smart Frieze. The results of the students’ test by using Kangaroo Smart Frieze as the vocabulary teaching media, and also the assessment from the experts were very good. Therefore, it could be concluded that Kangaroo Smart Frieze has a good prospect to be used in the vocabulary teaching and learning process. As suggestion, the teachers should always try to choose appropriate vocabulary teaching media, and the future researchers should conduct better research and development to develop better vocabulary teaching media for elementary school students.

Eye movements provide relevant information about the functional state of some cognitive functions. The connection between eye movements and cognitive processes is based on the anatomical and functional overlap of structures controlling them in different parts of the brain. Various human activities, including reading, are associated with eye movements. Reading skills include two components: reading technique (a motor component) and reading comprehension (a cognitive component). Monitoring and interpretation of oculomotor response is a useful tool for studying the reading process. The present study characterizes saccadic and fixation eye-movement components in 7-8 year-old elementary school students that showed poor reading comprehension. The students were divided into three groups based on answer quality: giving no answer, giving a wrong answer, and coping with the task only with a prompt. The groups were found to differ in the amplitude, velocity, and deceleration of pro- and regressive saccades and the average duration of fixations per word. Thus, eye-movement parameters can be used to characterize the groups of schoolchildren that experience difficulty in reading comprehension or in formulating an answer to a semantic question. The present study contributes insight into various cognitive reading strategies and can be useful for creating personal learning paths for elementary school students to master reading skills, which are important for social success
