The aim of the research was to check whether there is a relationship between the perception of the workplace by the employee as attractive and the level of job satisfaction experienced by him/her. These analyzes are part of the search for environmental conditions of job satisfaction. The study group consisted of 100 office employees were asked to complete three questionnaires: Job Description Questionnaire by Neuberger and Allerbeck, Job Affect Scale by Brief, Burke, George, Robinson and Webster, and authors’ tool to measure the physical assessment of attractiveness the workplace. The results obtained confirm that the attractiveness of the workplace together with the perception of individual elements of space arrangement are related to job satisfaction, both in the emotional and cognitive dimensions. Thus, the results can be a premise to be used by the employer in the process of building an employer branding as inside-out as well as outside-in. Orientation: Literature shows that job description and career prospect are connected to job satisfaction and it is seen that, in Mauritius, job description and career prospect impact job satisfaction.Research purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between job description, career prospect and job satisfaction in Mauritius.Motivation for the study: It has been noticed that employees are dissatisfied when they perform duties outside their job description and also when they see that they do not have a good career prospect. Despite the existence of several researches, limited research exists in the Mauritian context. The outcome will provide significant relevance to existing knowledge.Research approach/design and method: A quantitative approach was adopted and a survey was conducted in a multinational company in Mauritius. A sample of 132 employees was chosen.Main findings: This research unravelled significant negative relationships between job description, career prospect and job satisfaction. The results revealed that, when duties are not well described or when duties are not in line with current responsibilities, the employees are dissatisfied. Similarly, the greater the chances that employees are not given the opportunity to get promoted, the more they are dissatisfied.Practical/managerial implications: Human resource practitioners, managers and team leaders need to recognise that employee’s moods influence the work pattern in the organisation and a clear job description and an appropriate career plan should exist.Contribution/value-add: Literature on the relationship between job description, career prospect and job satisfaction in the context of Mauritius is almost inexistent. This study will add to existing knowledge.

In two experiments over a 14-mo. period, 56 maintenance mechanics (framemen) served as experimental ( N = 21) and control ( N = 35) groups. Framemen carried work responsibilities on large “frames“—serving the larger business communities. Quantity aspect of the work consisted of 24-hr., day-to-day connection of wires to complete new, re-arranged, or disconnected circuits. The quality aspect could be measured by number of customer complaints which could be directly traced to inefficient or careless work on the frames. For the experimental groups only, all jobs were “systems analyzed.” Analyses were carried out and job enlargement (horizontal loadings) and job enrichment (vertical loadings) were implemented. Feedback was provided on productivity of individuals. “Hawthorne effects” and fluctuations of effort due to subtle types of supervisor-employee interaction were controlled by alternating supervisors and other environmental controls. Job satisfaction of each group was measured by the Job Description Index before and after each experiment. Following introduction of job-enrichment programs for experimental groups and measured before and after and during 14 mo., significant improvement in quantity and quality occurred and was maintained after termination of experiments. Expressed job satisfaction was average or slightly below on the Job Description Index for all workers. Despite improvement in productivity there were no significant differences in expressed job satisfaction.

Three spring and two fall crops of greenhouse tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L. Mill; various cultivars) grown in "Harrow" peat bags were irrigated 1, 4, 8 or 16 times daily. All plants received the same volume of fertilizer solution which varied with time from 0.2 to 1.0 L plant−1 d−1 according to crop and environmental conditions. The results showed little or no effect of irrigation frequency on early or total yield, number of grade no. 1 fruit, or fruit size. Key words: Lycopersicon esculentum, marketable yield
