ABSTRAK : Ikan kakatua merupakan salah satu ikan karang yang dapat membantu kehidupan pada ekosistem terumbu karang. Scaridae mengumpulkan berbagai spesies ganggang dengan cara memakan algae pendek yang menutupi substrat karang sehingga dapat mempengaruhi pertumbuhan terumbu karang. Sebaran Scaridae sangat ditentukan oleh kondisi dan variasi habitat terumbu karang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kelimpahan dan biomassa dari ikan Famili Scaridae. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada bulan Oktober 2018 di Perairan Pulau Kembar, Karimunjawa, Jepara. Pengambilan data  ikan karang menggunakan metode UVC dan data substrat terumbu karang diambil menggunakan metode LIT sepanjang 100 meter sejajar garis pantai dengan pengamatan pada dua kedalaman yaitu 3m dan 10m. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, didapatkan 11.459 individu yang termasuk dalam 49 spesies ikan karang yang berasal dari 14 famili. Ikan karang dari Famili Scaridae ditemukan sebanyak 1059 individu yang termasuk dalam 4 spesies ikan karang yang berasal dari 2 genus. Nilai kelimpahan ikan karang dari Famili Scaridae berkisar antara 48 hingga 204 ind/500m2, kelimpahan terendah berada pada stasiun 1 dan tertinggi berada di stasiun 3.  Nilai biomassa ikan karang dari Famili Scaridae berkisar antara 219,7–2491,7 kg/ha, biomassa terendah berada pada stasiun 1 dan tertinggi berada di stasiun 3.  Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahawa Pengaruh tutupan karang keras hidup sangat berpengaruh terhadap kelimpahan dan biomassa ikan karang dari Famili Scaridae. ABSTRACT : Parrot fish is one of the reef fish that can help life on the coral reef ecosystem. Scaridae collect various species of algae by eating short algae that cover the coral substrate so that it can affect the growth of coral reefs. Scaridae distribution is highly determined by the condition and variety of coral reef habitats. This study aims to examine the abundance and biomass of Scaridae Family fish. The study was conducted in October 2018 in the waters of the Kembar Islands, Karimunjawa, Jepara. Retrieval of reef fish data using UVC method and coral reef substrate data were taken using the LIT method along 100 meters along the coastline with observations at two depths in 3m and 10. Based on the results, 11,459 individuals were included in 49 species of reef fish originating from 14 families. Coral fish from the Family Scaridae were found as many as 1059 individuals included in 4 species of reef fish originating from 2 genera. The value of coral fish abundance from the Scaridae Family ranges from 48 to 204 ind / 500m2, the lowest abundance is at station 1 and the highest is at station 3. The reef fish biomass value of the Scaridae Family ranges from 219.7 - 2491.7 kg / ha, biomass the lowest is at station 1 and the highest is at station 3. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that the effect of live hard coral cover is very influential on the abundance and biomass of reef fish from the Scaridae Family.

The zonation can be evaluated by observing changes in ecosystem and social status in Wakatobi National Park (Taman Nasional Wakatobi – TNW). Coral reef ecosystem is one of the parameters indicating the effectiveness of zonation system. This study grouped TNW zones into No Take Zone (NTZ – area larang ambil; ZI, ZPB, ZPr) and use zone (UZ – area pemanfaatan; ZPL, ZPU) to determine impact of zonation implementation between 2009 – 2016 on coral reef ecosystem. Three parameters (benthic coverage, fish abundance and fish biomass) were determined by Point Intercept Transect (PIT) and underwater visual census (UVC) methods and all of these data were tested using two-way ANOVA. Hard coral coverage fluctuated between 19 – 32% however, NTZ and UZ had no significant hard coral cover differences (F=2,182, df=1, P=0,14). Abundance of carnivour fish (F=0,53, df=1, P=0,46) and herbivour fish (F=1,98, df=1, P=0,17) were similar between those two zones. Fish bombing and poisoning were two major threats until 2007. However, sand mining and waste management has overcome two previous major threats by 2017. Zonation system and its implementation can be one of mangement effectiveness indicators. Support Wakatobi National Park Authority, it is recommended to apply harvest control rules (HCR), regular patrol and monitoring and stakeholders capacity buiding. Dynamite fishing is one of the causes of damage to the coral reef ecosystem in Indonesia. Fishing activities using explosives (dynamite fishing) occur because of the desire of fishermen to get a lot of catch with low cost in a short time. Kapoposang Water Park (WP) is a region rich in marine biological resources. However, dynamite fishing activities which are still found within the area have caused the coral reef ecosystem to be severely damaged. The results showed a lower difference in the percentage of live coral cover at dynamite fishing locations (DF1, DF2) compared to control locations (K1, K2). In addition, the highest average values of coral fish abundance were found at locations K1, DF1, and DF2. Conversely, the results of the analysis found the lowest fish abundance at the K2 location. Different from the average number of reef fish species that were higher at the control location (K1, K2) compared to dynamite fishing locations (DF1, DF2). For the target fish biomass there is no real difference between the control location and dynamite fishing.

Penempatan reef ball di perairan Teluk Buyat dan sekitarnya telah dilakukan pada tahun 1999 oleh PT. Newmont Minahasa Raya. Tujuan penempatan reef ball untuk membangun habitat berbagai biota yang berasosiasi dengan karang sehingga dapat meningkatkan populasi ikan ekonomis penting. Kehadiran ikan karang pada reef ball sangat penting secara ekologis dan ekonomis. Penurunan kualitas terumbu berarti hilangnya nilai ekonomi barang dan jasa, serta hilangnya jaminan makanan dan pekerjaan untuk masyarakat pesisir, yang umumnya hidup dalam kemiskinan. Secara keseluruan, komposisi spesies ikan yang ditemukan di reef ball terdiri dari 19 famili, 34 genus, 50 spesies dan 290 individu, yang tertinggi dihuni oleh jenis dari famili Mullidae. Seiring dengan bertambahnya waktu dan usia reef ball, beberapa spesies terlihat sudah menetap seperti Lutjanus kasmira, dan beberapa spesies dari famili Acanthuridae. Keberadaan reef ball membantu terbentuknya ekosistem terumbu karang yang baru dan meningkatkan kesuburan perairan, sehingga lebih meningkatkan keberadaan komposisi ikan karang, yang pada akhirnya meningkatkan pendapatan nelayan dari hasil tangkapan ikan karang.Kata kunci: Reef ball, karang batu, ikan karang Distribution of Coral Reefs and Fish in Buyat Bay Area Reef Ball Southeast Minahasa Regency The placement of reef ball in Buyat Bay and surrounding areas have been carried out since 1999 by PT. Newmont Minahasa Raya. The goal of this placement was to build a habitat for many biota associated with reef thus may improve economically important fish populations. The presence of reef fish on the reef ball is indispensable ecologically and economically. Furthermore, the degradation of reefs might cause the disappearance of economic value of goods and services, as well as the disappearance of food security and employment for coastal communities, who generally live in poverty. Overall, the composition of fish species found in the reef ball consists of 19 families, 34 genera, 50 species and 290 individuals, the highest inhabited by species of the family Mullidae. As time went by and the increase of reef ball age, some species seem have settled down such as Lutjanus kasmira, and several species of the Acanthuridae family. In addition, the presence of reef ball helps the formation of a new coral reef ecosystem and increase the fertility of waters, therefore enhancing the presence of reef fish composition, which might increases the income of fishermen. Abstract Hard coral is a type of coral building structure in coral reef ecosystems. Hard coral is a coral reef entity that plays an important function in a coral reef ecosystem, especially related to physical and ecological functions in shallow marine waters environment. This study aimed to study percentages of coral cover, species life form, diversity index, dominance index, and distribution clusters of hard corals based on environmental parameters around Ternate Island. Hard coral cover sampling was carried out systematically using the underwater photo transect (UPT) method. The number of sampling stations were 30 location points with 750 photos. The method used for analyzing ecological conditions of hard corals was coral point count with excel extensions (CPCe). Environmental parameters measured included salinity, temperature, pH, brightness level, and dissolved oxygen. The distribution of hard coral clusters was analyzed statistically using the classify-hierarchical cluster. Study results showed that coral cover percentages ranged from 19% to 93% with an average cover of 67%, species diversity range was 7 to 40 species with an average of 19 species, diversity index (H ') with a value of 1.14 to 6.02 with an average of 2.07, dominance index (D) with a value of 0.13 to 0.53 with an average of 0.23. The results of the analysis of the distribution of hard corals consisted of four clusters. The study also found that distribution of hard coral clusters in Ternate Island was related to substrate topography.

The coral reef ecosystem is one of the typical tropical ecosystems with high biodiversity which has an important role both biologically, ecologically, physically as well as socially and economically. Several coral reef areas in Indonesia were reported to have suffered damage, not only due to climate change which has an impact on rising sea surface temperatures and ocean acidification but also due to anthropogenic factors and irresponsible management of marine tourism. This study aimed to analyze the condition of coral reefs based on covering in Pramuka Island, which is one of the famous tourist destinations in the Seribu Islands. The study was conducted using Line Intercept Transect (LIT) method at predetermined coordinate points. The results showed that the dominant coral reef life form was Acropora Submassive (ACS), namely 18.9%, and Acropora Branching (ACB) as much as 12.48%. Besides, the types of life forms found were coral foliase (9.42%), Miliepora Coral (9.2%), Coral Massive (4.8%), Acropora Encrustring (4.24%), and so on. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the condition of coral reefs in Pramuka Island is still relatively good with a total coral cover percentage of 72.38%. Efforts to protect the coral reef ecosystem in this area need to be considered so that its condition can be maintained.

AbstractOne of the major goals of coral reef conservation is to determine the most effective means of managing marine resources in regions where economic conditions often limit the options available. For example, no-take fishing areas can be impractical in regions where people rely heavily on reef fish for food. In this study we test whether coral reef health differed among areas with varying management practices and socio-economic conditions on Pulau Weh in the Indonesian province of Aceh. Our results show that gear restrictions, in particular prohibiting the use of nets, were successful in minimizing habitat degradation and maintaining fish biomass despite ongoing access to the fishery. Reef fish biomass and hard-coral cover were two- to eight-fold higher at sites where fishing nets were prohibited. The guiding principle of the local customary management system, Panglima Laot, is to reduce conflict among community members over access to marine resources. Consequently, conservation benefits in Aceh have arisen from a customary system that lacks a specific environmental ethic or the means for strong resource-based management. Panglima Laot includes many of the features of successful institutions, such as clearly defined membership rights and the opportunity for resource users to be involved in making, enforcing and changing the rules. Such mechanisms to reduce conflict are the key to the success of marine resource management, particularly in settings that lack resources for enforcement.

This research aims to analyse density of Drupella's on coral reef ecosystem, analyze the percentage of coral cover and analyze the relationship between the density of Drupella with environmental factors and conditions coral reef ecosystem in the waters of Semujur Island. Research data retrieval in April 2019 in the waters of Semujur Island. Drupella data retrieval using Belt Transect method and coral reef data retrieval using Line Intercept Transek. The results showed that the highest overall density of Drupella is in the area of coral, which is 244 ind/100m2 and the lowest density of Drupella is in the landscaped area of 31 ind/100m2, coral cover percentage Highest in the area of coral average of 72.20% and the lowest 23.44% while on the highest cover area of 54.96% and lows of 29.14%. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in the reef flats and Drupella watersheds correlates with temperature, current, pH, Dissolved Oxygen and Total Suspended Solid. Correspondence Analysis (CA) in the reef flats was found that Drupella was positively correlated with lifeforms acropora submassive, acropora tabulate, coral submassive, and coral massive. In the slope area of the Drupella positively correlated with the type of lifeform acropora digitate, acropora submassive, acropora tabulate, coral submassive, and coral branching.

Sponges are one of the most diverse benthos in the coral reef ecosystem. They have many morphological characters that are specific to species, and their existence is influenced by environmental conditions. The aims of this study are to observe the relationship between morphological and species diversity of sponges in coral reef ecosystem in the Lembeh Strait and investigate the most influential environmental factor on sponge diversity. The study was carried out between April and May 2013 at nine study sites. The methods used were belt transect and line intersect transect (LIT) installed parallel to the coastline at approximately 5-meter depth. Our study supports a positive correlation between the morphological diversity and species diversity of sponges. Many of the morphological growth types were specific to sites that have particular characteristics. The percentage of the live coral cover is not a critical factor for sponge diversity in the strait. Instead, dead coral with algae as a benthic category has a significant positive correlation with the morphological and species diversity of sponges. Conversely, rubble as a substrate type has a strong tendency to affect sponge diversity negatively. To conclude, it is important to maintain healthy reefs in order to sustain benthic communities that are valuable to ecological functions and societies. Keywords:sponges, diversity, coral reefs, Lembeh Strait

This study aims to identify the status of reef fishes and coral reefs in Gili Meno, Air, and Trawangan or Gili Matra waters. This area is part of the North Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province. Field observation was conducted on September 2011 at 11 (eleven) diving points. The video-transect method was used for observing the coral reef condition, while reef fishes abundance was observed by using visual-census method. The parameter that used to determine the condition of coral reef in study location are the percentage of live hard coral cover and index of coral mortality. In general, the result shows that percentage of live hard coral cover in each diving point ranged from 4.4% - 37.2% and the Coral Mortality Index (IMK) ranged form 0.40-0.92. The values describe that the condition of coral reef at eleven diving points vary from fair until poor condition. Current status of coral reef condition showed an insignificant increase from bad to moderate during the period 2011 -2018. There were 23 families of reef fishes from 46 genera were found during the study consisting of 16 genera of target fish groups, 5 genera of indicator fish group, and 25 genera of major fish group. The water quality is still within the limits of environmental quality standards.   Keywords: Reef fish, coral reef, Mortality Index, water quality, Gili Matra
