The study investigated determinants of risky sexual behaviours among adolescents in secondary schools in Rivers State. The study adopted the ex-post-facto research design. Four research questions as well as four corresponding hypotheses guided the study. The population of the study comprised 14,784 senior secondary school students (SSS 1, 2 and 3) in the 16 public secondary schools in Obio/Akpor LGA of Rivers State. A sample of 300 adolescents was randomly and independently selected using purposive sampling technique. Four instruments (questionnaire) were used to collect data for the study. They include; the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSS), Risky Sexual Behaviours Scale (RSBS), Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS) and Peer Group Influence Scale (PGIS). The instruments were designed on a four point Likert scale of Strongly Agree (SA) =4, Agree (A) =3, Disagree (D) =2, and Strongly Disagree (SD) =1. The Cronbach Alpha reliability was used to establish the internal consistency reliability coefficients of 0.81, 0.73, 0.67 and 0.71 respectively. Responses to the research questions were answered with mean and standard deviation, while the hypotheses were tested with z-test statistics. The findings of the study revealed that emotional intelligence and peer pressure were significant determinants of risky sexual behaviours among adolescents in secondary school in Rivers State, whereas self-esteem and gender are not. Based on the findings of the study it was recommended among others that counsellors should readily offer practical assistance to adolescents experiencing sexuality problems to enable them develop healthy sexual behaviours and maintain healthy relationships with others.

This study investigated the Influence of parents and peer group on choice of business education programme among secondary school students in Zaria metropolis, Kaduna state. The study had four objectives. Four research questions were raised to guide the study while two null hypotheses were formulated and tested. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study was 8865 SS III students that registered for UTME in Zaria metropolis. Three hundred and eighty two students were used as sample for the study. The instrument used to collect information from the respondents was self- structured questionnaire, titled Students Choice of Business Education (SCBE).  Data were collected by researcher assisted by seven (7) research assistants using face to face method. Data collected were analyzed using mean score for answering the research questions and Pearson Product Moment Correlation for testing the two null hypotheses.   The study revealed among others that parents have influence on the choice of business education programme among secondary school students in Zaria metropolis. It was concluded that in a short run lesser number of students would be offering Business subjects in senior secondary schools level because most parents and peer group discourages students from opting for educational related course. The research recommended among others that secondary schools authority in Kaduna state should invite parents to create awareness to them on career day. This will enable parents to appreciate the importance of Business subjects

AbstractA lack of learners’ discipline is a major school problem in secondary schools in Mauritius. The study aims at determining and examining the main causes of this problem in the context of Mauritius. Qualitative data were collected from learners, educators, principals and parents of four secondary schools by using focus group interviews and individual face-to-face interviews. By using content analysis, the study revealed that the causes of learners’ lack of discipline originate from the family (the parenting style, working parents, ineffective parental discipline and the dysfunctional family), the learners’ attitudes to education and schooling, the educators’ attitudes to their role of maintaining learner discipline, the principals’ lack of authority and leadership in managing learner discipline and the influence of peer group in the school setting. The study shows that all the stakeholders of the school community are responsible for the deterioration of learner discipline in secondary schools. It recommends that there should be a decentralisation of learner discipline strategies from the Ministry of Education to the secondary school principals who should be empowered to set up their institutional school discipline plan.

This paper adopted a descriptive design to investigate the awareness level and the perception of secondary school Physics teachers towards Nanotechnology in Port Harcourt Metropolis of Rivers State. The population of the study was 43 physics teachers comprising of 25 male and 18 female which was used from the 12 public secondary schools in Port Harcourt Metropolis in Rivers State. The instrument for the study was a self- made questionnaire titled, Nanotechnology Questionnaire on Awareness and Perception for Teachers (NQAPT) with a reliability of 0.85 obtained using Cronbach Alpha reliability formula. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The research questions were answered using the criterion mean of 2.5 and standard deviation, while the null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance using t- test. The findings revealed that the awareness level of Nanotechnology among teacher was low and their perception towards nanotechnology was positive. There is no significant difference between the awareness level and perception of the concept of Nanotechnology among male and female senior secondary school Physics teachers. Based on these findings, it is recommended that more awareness on the concept of Nanotechnology be created among secondary school teachers through symposium and science teaching workshop in order to publicize the benefits of nanotechnology to the society.

This work supports a critical construction of generic identities in literary education for adolescents. One objective is the recognition of femininity, masculinity, love, and sexuality as cultural constructions that facilitate the development of gender models and loving and sexual behaviours as free and reflective as possible. A second objective is the identification of examples of the ‘total woman’ trap (double work) and its consequences. A third objective is to show the link betweenthe type of relationship established and the self-esteem and power of the participants. After the theoretical introduction, we present a proposal for a reading club for final year secondary school students with three novels that reflect these topics and issues and a pretest-posttest questionnaire (following a quasi-experimental design) for students to answer before and after implementation to assess development of the objectives.
