A thermodynamic analysis and optimization of a newly-conceived combined power cycle were conducted in this paper for the purpose of improving overall thermal efficiency of power cycles by attempting to minimize thermodynamic irreversibilities and waste heat as a consequence of the Second Law. The power cycle concept comprises a topping advanced recompression supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) Brayton cycle and a bottoming transcritical carbon dioxide (tCO2) Rankine cycle. The bottoming cycle configurations included a simple tCO2 Rankine cycle and a split tCO2 Rankine cycle. The topping sCO2 recompression Brayton cycle used a combustion chamber as a heat source, and waste heat from a topping cycle was recovered by the tCO2 Rankine cycle due to an added high efficiency recuperator for generating electricity. The combined cycle configurations were thermodynamically modeled and optimized using an Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software. Simple bottoming tCO2 Rankine cycle cannot fully recover the waste heat due to the high exhaust temperature from the top cycle, and therefore an advance split tCO2 Rankine cycle was employed in order to recover most of the waste heat. Results show that the highest thermal efficiency was obtained with recompression sCO2 Brayton cycle – split flow tCO2 Rankine cycle. Also, the results show that the combined CO2 cycles is a promising technology compared to conventional cycles.

For the concentrating solar power (CSP) applications, the supercritical carbon dioxide (s-CO2) power cycle is beneficial in many aspects, including high cycle efficiencies, reduced component sizing, and potential for the dry cooling option. More research is involved in improving this technology to realize the s-CO2 cycle as a candidate to replace the conventional power conversion systems for CSP applications. In this study, an isothermal compressor, a turbomachine which undergoes the compression process at constant temperature to minimize compression work, is applied to the s-CO2 power cycle layout. To investigate the cycle performance changes of adopting the novel technology, a framework for defining the efficiency of the isothermal compressor is revised and suggested. This study demonstrates how the compression work for the isothermal compressor is reduced, up to 50%, compared to that of the conventional compressor under varying compressor inlet conditions. Furthermore, the simple recuperated and recompression Brayton cycle layouts using s-CO2 as a working fluid are evaluated for the CSP applications. Results show that for compressor inlet temperatures (CIT) near the critical point, the recompression Brayton cycle using an isothermal compressor has 0.2–1.0% point higher cycle thermal efficiency compared to its reference cycle. For higher CIT values, the recompression cycle using an isothermal compressor can perform above 50% in thermal efficiency for a wider range of CIT than the reference cycle. Adopting an isothermal compressor in the s-CO2 layout can imply larger heat exchange area for the compressor which requires further development.

In off-shore oil and gas platforms the selection of the gas turbine to support the electrical and mechanical demand on site is often a compromise between reliability, efficiency, compactness, low weight and fuel flexibility. Therefore, recovering the waste heat in off-shore platforms presents both technological and economic challenges that need to be overcome. However, onshore established technologies such as the steam Rankine cycle, the air bottoming cycle and the organic Rankine cycle can be tailored to recover the exhaust heat off-shore. In the present paper, benefits and challenges of these three different technologies are presented, considering the Draugen platform in the North Sea as a base case. The Turboden 65-HRS unit is considered as representative of the organic Rankine cycle technology. Air bottoming cycles are analyzed and optimal design pressure ratios are selected. We also study a one pressure level steam Rankine cycle employing the once-through heat recovery steam generator without bypass stack. We compare the three technologies considering the combined cycle thermal efficiency, the weight, the net present value, the profitability index and payback time. Both incomes related to CO2 taxes and natural gas savings are considered. The results indicate that the Turboden 65-HRS unit is the optimal technology, resulting in a combined cycle thermal efficiency of 41.5% and a net present value of around 15 M$, corresponding to a payback time of approximately 4.5 years. The total weight of the unit is expected to be around 250 ton. The air bottoming cycle without intercooling is also a possible alternative due to its low weight (76 ton) and low investment cost (8.8 M$). However, cycle performance and profitability index are poorer, 12.1% and 0.75. Furthermore, the results suggest that the once-trough single pressure steam cycle has a combined cycle thermal efficiency of 40.8% and net present value of 13.5 M$. The total weight of the steam Rankine cycle is estimated to be around 170 ton.

Two combined cycle engine cascade concepts are presented in this paper. The first uses a traditional open loop gas turbine engine (Brayton cycle) with a combustor as the topping cycle and a series of supercritical carbon dioxide (S–CO2) engines as intermediate cycles and a bottoming cycle. A global optimization of the engine design parameters was conducted to maximize the combined efficiency of all of the engines. A combined cycle efficiency of 65.0% is predicted. The second combined cycle configuration utilizes a fuel cell inside of the topping cycle in addition to a combustor. The fuel cell utilizes methane fuel. The waste heat from the fuel cell is used to heat the high pressure air. A combustor is also used to burn the excess fuel not usable by the fuel cell. After being heated, the high pressure, high temperature air expands through a turbine to atmospheric pressure. The low pressure, intermediate temperature exhaust air is then used to power a cascade of supercritical carbon dioxide engines. A combined efficiency of 73.1% using the fuel lower heating value is predicted with this combined fuel cell and heat engine device. Details of thermodynamics as well as the (S–CO2) engines are given.

Nearly all electrical power is generated by rotating a coil in a magnetic field. In most cases, the coil is turned by a steam turbine operating according to the Rankine cycle. Water is boiled and heated to make high-pressure steam, which drives the turbine. The thermal efficiency is about 30–35%, and is limited by the highest steam temperature tolerated by the turbine blades. Alternatively, a gas turbine operating according to the Brayton cycle can be used. Much higher turbine inlet temperatures are possible, and the thermal efficiency is higher, typically 40%. Combined cycle generation, in which the hot exhaust from a gas turbine drives a Rankine cycle, can achieve thermal efficiencies of almost 60%. Substitution of coal-fired by combined cycle natural gas power plants can result in significant reductions in CO2 emissions.

Now a day’s power generation is most important for every country. This power is generated by some thermal cycles. But single cycle cannot be attain complete power requirements and its efficiency also very low so that to fulfill this requirements to combine two or more cycles in a single power plant then we can increase the efficiency of the power plant. Its increased efficiency is more than that of if the plant operated on single cycle. In which we are using two different cycles and these two cycles are operated by means of different working mediums. These type of power plants we can called them like combined cycle power plants. In combined cycle power plants above cycle is known as topping cycle and below cycle is known as bottoming cycle. The above cycle generally brayton cycle which uses air as a working medium. When the power generation was completed the exhaust gas will passes in to the waste heat recovery boiler. Another cycle also involved in bottoming cycle. This cycle works on the basis on rankine cycle. In which steam is used as working medium. The main component in bottoming cycle is waste heat recovery boiler. It will receive exhaust heat from the gas turbine and converts water in to steam. The steam used for generating power by expansion on steam turbine. Combined cycle power plants are mostly used in commercial power plants.In this paper we are analyzing one practical combined cycle power plant. In practical conditions due to some losses it can not be generates complete power. So that we are invistigated why it is not give that much of power and the effect of various operating parameters such as maximum temperature and pressure of rankine cycle, gas turbine inlet temperature and pressure ratio of Brayton cycle on the net output work and thermal efficiency of the combine cycle power plant.The outcome of this work can be utilized in order to facilitate the design of a combined cycle with higher efficiency and output work. Mathematical calculations and simple graphs in ms excel, and auto cad has been carried out to study the effects and influences of the above mentioned parameters on the efficiency and work output.

The supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) Brayton power conversion cycle has been receiving worldwide attention because of high thermal efficiency due to relatively low compression work near the critical point (30.98°C, 7.38MPa) of CO2. The S-CO2 Brayton cycle can achieve high efficiency with simple cycle configuration at moderate turbine inlet temperature (450∼650°C) and relatively high density of S-CO2 makes possible to design compact power conversion cycle. In order to achieve compact cycle layout, a highly compact heat exchanger such as printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) is widely used. Since, the cycle thermal efficiency is a strong function of the compressor inlet temperature in the S-CO2 power cycle, the research team at KAIST is focusing on the thermal hydraulic performance of the PCHE as a precooler. The investigation was performed by first developing a PCHE in-house design code named KAIST-HXD. This was followed by constructing the designed PCHE and testing it in the KAIST experimental facility, S-CO2PE. The test results of the PCHE were compared to the test results of a shell and tube type heat exchanger as well.
