Abstract This paper points out the possibilities of better exploitation of marine traffic as well as its connection with other kinds of traffic. Special attention is given to the analysis of 1,081 harbors about their availability during the year. The methods and algorithms used in GIS are buffers, cluster, method of interpolations, and network analysis. The methods used for the purpose of conducting numerical analyses are algorithms that served for the analysis of the network, its transport features, and the connectivity with harbors in terms of geospace. The main results found in this research showed that harbors have good connectivity in the first place with road traffic and after that with air and railroad traffic. According to data from 2019, all traffic lines cover 4.1 × 1015 km, and the road traffic has the most significant potential in connection with the harbors. The most connected harbors and airports are in the east coast of North America, west coast, north Europe, southern Europe, south-east Australia, a central part of Oceania, and south-east Africa. The results in the modified Likert scale between airports and harbors showed medium results. The densest road network is located in the eastern part of USA, western and central part of Europe, and east coast of China. The number of possible connected lines between main road nodes and harbors is 0.8 × 109. This type of traffic showed excellent results and connection with harbors. The number of possible connected lines per month between railroads and harbors is 1.3 × 103. This type of traffic showed low connectivity with the harbors. In the end comparison of harbors with air, road and railroad networks were established. The geographical position of harbors was analyzed, and better understanding was performed on a global scale.

In the recent decades, we have witnessed an increase in the number of vehicles using the road infrastructure, resulting in an increased overload of the road network. To mitigate such problems, caused by the increasing number of vehicles and increasing the efficiency and safety of transport systems has been integrated applications of advanced technology, denominated Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). However, one problem still unsolved in current road networks is the automatic identification of road events such as accidents or traffic jams, being inhibitor to efficient road management. In order to mitigate this problematic, this paper proposes the development of a technological platform able to detect anomalies (abnormal traffic events) to typical road network status and categorize such anomalies. The proposed work, adopts a complex event processing (CEP) engine able to monitor streams of events and detect specified patterns of events in real time. Data is collectively collected and analysed in real-time from loop sensors deployed in Slovenian highways and national roads, providing traffic flows. This prototype will work with a large number of data, being used to process all data, complex event processing tools. All the data used to validate the present study is based on the Slovenian road network. This work has been carried out in the context of the OPTIMUM Project, funded by the H2020 European Research Framework Program.

A report by the World Health Organization indicates that over one billion people in the world are affected by some form of disability or have limited fitness, and 200 million have difficulties in functioning [1]. In Poland, according to the statistics, there are 7.5 million people with functional limitations, including almost 2.5 million those in a significant degree [2]. Many people with different dysfunctions drive vehicles, among this group there are also older people, who, with age experience the reduction of many functions affecting the safe driving of the vehicle. To assess some factors increasing the safety of disabled participants in the road traffic, selected psychomotor aspects have been verified. This article presents analyses related to determining the capabilities of people with disabilities depending on whether the disability was congenital or acquired. These drivers were also compared with non-disabled road users. Psychomotor performance was checked using the DTS (Driver Test Station) device. It was noticed that people with acquired disability do better in the majority of tests measuring both pressure forces and reactions of particular limbs in comparison with people with a congenital disability. The research presented sets the direction for further explorations, mainly due to the small group of respondents, but they can nevertheless form the basis for further hypotheses and their verification.

OpenStreetMap (OSM) is the largest spatial database of the world. One of the most frequently occurring geospatial elements within this database is the road network, whose quality is crucial for applications such as routing and navigation. Several methods have been proposed for the assessment of OSM road network quality, however they are often tightly coupled to the characteristics of the authoritative dataset involved in the comparison. This makes it hard to replicate and extend these methods. This study relies on an automated procedure which was recently developed for comparing OSM with any road network dataset. It is based on three Python modules for the open source GRASS GIS software and provides measures of OSM road network spatial accuracy and completeness. Provided that the user is familiar with the authoritative dataset used, he can adjust the values of the parameters involved thanks to the flexibility of the procedure. The method is applied to assess the quality of the Paris OSM road network dataset through a comparison against the French official dataset provided by the French National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information (IGN). The results show that the Paris OSM road network has both a high completeness and spatial accuracy. It has a greater length than the IGN road network, and is found to be suitable for applications requiring spatial accuracies up to 5-6 m. Also, the results confirm the flexibility of the procedure for supporting users in carrying out their own comparisons between OSM and reference road datasets.

Tunnels are underground passages, placed horizontally, which serve to lead the road through them. In order to fulfill its purpose in road traffic, the tunnel must fit into the traffic infrastructure and as such not create an obstacle in movement and enable the movement of vehicles from entrance to exit without danger, but with increased restriction of freedom of lateral evacuation. Tunnels are among some of the most risky parts of the road network, primarily due to space constraints, where there is a possibility of a traffic accident. Managing the risks associated with the passage of road traffic, and in particular the safety of traffic in tunnels, is a serious problem in many countries. With the growing number of road users, it is necessary to adopt stricter standards regarding road tunnels. In addition to meeting these safety standards, factors such as operational requirements, economic efficiency, energy efficiency and state-of-the-art technology should also be taken into account when planning and equipping tunnels.

The paper considers the problem of improving the level of road traffic services. The level of service for various categories of city streets in practice does not correspond to the values given in normative legal documents. Therefore, the task of increasing the level of service to the indicated values on the road network is urgent. Herewith, it is important to specify the object of improvement, namely, the basic street-road network, through which the bulk of the transportation correspondence is implemented, since it is there that the greatest loss of the user time occurs. An effective tool in this work is the development of a set of measures using simulation modeling aimed at improving the level of traffic services on the street-road network.

Due to its geographical situation, the port of Ploče has become a junction of land and sea routes within the Transport Corridor Vc, as a part of the Mediterranean Transport Corridor, passing through Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Hungary. The paper deals with the analysis of the connecting roads leading from the port of Ploče as well as with the evaluation of the respective road traffic volume. Although the congestion on certain road sections is related to the tourist transit traffic, the road traffic volume at the Transport Corridor Vc within Bosnia and Herzegovina indicates the need for the construction of a motorway to stretch out the Corridor. The planned modernisation will fundamentally improve the main road infrastructure on the Transport Corridor Vc that will facilitate the transport of goods and enable shorter travel time from the port of Ploče to the hinterland. Considering that the major portion of the freight transport from the port of Ploče uses road transport services, the envisaged modernisation will significantly increase competitiveness of the port, mostly due to the intermodal transport mode.

AbstractMilitary actions generally unfold rapidly in different operational environments for which the commanding officer has assess the bearing capacity of the prestressed concrete bridges existing in the country’s road network. The bearing capacity is the maximum weight of the predetermined constitution convoy, which may safely circulate on the bridge, in stable conditions, considering the physical condition of the bridge. The paper shows that the bearing capacity will be assessed only through a technical analysis performed by an authorized expert together with a military engineer specialized in genius. This experts report will compare the initial condition of the bridge to the present one. The initial condition is based on the research of the execution design; the year of elaboration; the standard loadings at the moment; proprieties of the used building materials; execution modality, possible alterations occurring during execution as to the initial project. These data, together with the road traffic census, can be obtained from the company administrating the road network where the bridge is located. The current state to be assessed through analysis, calculation and static loading tests, showing if the capacity of the bridge can to support the increase of traffic military vehicle loading and reduction of the bearing capacity due to fatigue phenomena in the reinforcement. The paper proposes that authorities draw up and approve a standard concerning the verification periodicity of the bearing capacity in the existing prestressed concrete bridges.

The paper investigates the accidents and fatalities on the main road network in the North-West Region of Romania over a period of 4 years (2015– 2018). The aim of the paper is to highlight some shortcomings and suggest possible improvements of the road network in order to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities. Detailed analyses, including statistical and spatial statistical analyses, were conducted on the accidents involving goods and public transport vehicles considering the scale of their impact. As a result, black corridors and vulnerable municipalities were identified. They were found to be related to the reduced main road density and high levels of freight traffic transit. In conclusion, with one of the lowest motorization rates in the EU and given the important efforts already made by the police, improving road network in Romania becomes the key for reducing accident and fatality rates in the region. In this regard, it is suggested that motorways and ring roads are needed in order to bypass the vulnerable municipalities. The results of this research may enable planners and administrations to act strategically to improve road safety in the critical areas, to prioritize actions for road network development and to formulate better strategies to ensure road safety.
