Abstract Hastings reads the novel Comme dans un film des frères Coen (2010) by Bertrand Gervais as addressing both the midlife and the blank page crisis. Indeed, the main character of this novel is a writer in his fifties who still suffers from the failure of his last novel ignored by the critics. Disenchanted, he slowly enters a world of fantasy, and falls in love with the voice of his GPS he called Gwyneth “parle trop” (speaks too much) therefore recalling the name of the actress with the same name. He gradually loses contact with his wife and his son, a successful painter, and is transformed into “the man who was not there” another character from a movie by the Coen brothers entitled The Barber: the man who was not there. Hastings asks: How could one get lost with a GPS? After the main character had initially bought his GPS for a trip in Australia in order to find his way, it started to go beyond its role as a road guide and questioned where he was in his relationship with his wife, in his career as a writer, and in his skin as a mature man. Not only was the GPS not fulfilling its purpose but also it started to ruin a fragile relationship hoping to find its way back to love during a last minute trip in Australia. Even after destroying the annoying talkative GPS, it continued to disrupt the couple in the plane on the way back to Canada. As much as Gwyneth the GPS is synonymous with escape and freedom, it is also showing the main character the wrong way, the way out of his reality, out of his family and out of his life. His attempts to free himself from Gwyneth are worthless, her image is still there, haunting his thoughts like images from a movie. But the displacement happens at another level than just the diegetic one. The confrontation of the text with moving images has consequences on the shape of the text itself. The mapping of the text on the page is influenced by this amalgam. The white page becomes a space where words are rearranged in different ways, some of which suggest poetry, other cartoons or cinematic images. The displacement of literature in areas that were previously foreign to it is at the heart of creative activity, and determines its renewal. Hastings presents the consequences resulting from the confrontation with the GPS, both on the mapping of one’s identity as well as the mapping and the shaping of the text itself.

This article contends that, in the same way as some postcolonial literature, the latter third generation Nigerian literature is a product of the writer’s experience. When the writer does not reproduce his sociopolitical experience, he reshapes his expectations into literature. The writer manipulates his experience into creative activity that fulfils his innate desire – this is the same desire which he is ordinarily unable to achieve in reality. This article argues further that even though the literature is a product of the writer’s experience, it is harmless and beneficent. Using Camillus Ukah’s Sweet Things as a representative text of the fiction produced by a latter third generation Nigerian literature writer, emphasis is made on the way in which Camillus Ukah has recreated his experience. It concludes that through the novel, Ukah expresses his bitterness towards a certain matrimonial experience that is of his particular concern.

A theology of tenderness - the counterchurch in Heinrich Böll's novel Gruppenbild mit DameHeinrich Böll's novel Gruppenbild mit Dame is a protest against a dehumanized German society - a society which, according to him, is solely committed to production and consumption. In the novel the way in which a certain group of people live is portrayed - a depiction forming a stark contrast with society and its corrupt values. In the novel this small group of people is positioned around the main character, Leni Pfeiffer. Boll could never rid himself of his Christian heritage - thus religious motifs are significant in this work, as they are in his whole oeuvre. In the novel it soon becomes evident that Leni has the qualities o f a new madonna and that the group surrounding her exhibits the characteristics o f a secret church or counterchurch. Not only does this church have its own madonna and its own messiah, it even has its own gospel - that of deliberate underachievement. This article attempts to analyse the above-mentioned aspects of the counterchurch in the novel and to examine the implications of such a subculture for Western civilization, not only in Germany, but also in our own African context.

The article deals with the way the figures of Author and Reader are represented in the plot of the novel “Kys” by T. Tolstaya. The discreditation of the figures is proved to have the features of postmodernist literature. In the novel events which are narrated about, occurred after atomic Explosion, which thrown off humanity in cultural and social evolution to late Stone Age. In this future exists race named “golubchiki” – mutants who were born after Explosion and who are spiritual degraded. The main character is Benedict. He rewrites texts allegedly written by the chief of represented society – Fedor Kuzmich Kablukov. Benedict is trying to interpret the written in his own way, which brings to birth of Reader, turning according to post-modernism into new “Dieu cache”. However Benedict’s intellection as the most “golubchiks” is primitive. The character invariably compares what is read to his own experience, his associations are concretely ignorant and remain within the framework of native environment. But Benedict himself fully believes in post-modern way that he is Reader, standing above Author. Demonstrative is also Benedict’s perception of Pushkin : he does not see in Pushkin anything sacral or mythological. In his opinion the poet is nothing but a common wooden statuette, engraved therewith by himself. So, Benedict is not the admirer but ingenuous maker, the creator of Pushkin, in other words, a God for his creation. There is also another “author” in the novel – Fedor Kuzmich, who takes the advantage of the situation when Author dies (all true authors have died before or after an Explosion). Kablukov recopies somebody else’s text zealously. Thereby usurping Author’s role, being only the typical scripter indeed, who have replaced the author in post-modern study. Accordingly, in the novel “Kys” already on the plotline level is designed post-modern situation of author’s death: all literary texts are written very long ago, in the modernity of “golubchiks” is nothing new created; the only “author” – Fedor Kuzmich appears to be just a scripter, who recopies another’s compositions. Author’s figure in that way turns into figment and is almost completely leveled. In “Kys” is also disconsidered the meaning of born Reader, who imagined himself Dieu cache, though he is not capable making any adequate interpretation of a text.

Kochin (2002:8) makes the following interesting observation regarding the life of the main character, David Lurie, in Coetzee’s novel, “Disgrace” (1999), and his observation will be explored in detail when analysing the novel, and in particular the presentation of masculinities: “Lurie has no relationship of depth with men. His one effort is with Isaacs, Melanie’s father, and seems to be more of a quest for the sources of Melanie’s beauty than the expression of a desire for friendship with a man.” The focus of my investigation is on male-male relationships and the way in which they impact on the other characters in the novel. What contribution does the novel make to the debate on masculinity within the context of South African literary studies?

La Pelle, novel or autobiographical story by Curzio Malaparte and La Pelle, film by Liliana Cavani. Written hypotext and visual hypertext in terminology of literary and interartistic theory. On the other hand there are Il disprezzo, novel by Alberto Moravia and Le Mépris, film by Jean-Luc Godard, in a similar condition. There is always an intermediate step: it is the script, written but already prefiguring moving images. We can consider it both hypotexts of the novel and hypertext of the film. In Liliana Cavani’s film, the Malaparte house is necessarily the same as in the novel, where it appears and is explicitly described. However in the case of Le Mépris it is a choice of Godard, since the reference to the house in the novel only prefigures that the house is in Capri and has nice views to Punta Campanella. As we will see some of the locations, when adapting to the configuration of the Malaparte, extract from the house specific original possibilities of the film and in some way they bring new approaches of greater plasticity to the scenes while, however, the dialogues between the characters remain almost intact. One example is the way in which a singular element such as the upper terrace of the house replaces the beach where Molteni, the screenwriter, finds his wife Emilia. The same terrace appears as well as the set of the Odyssey version that begins to be shoot precisely at the end of Le Mépris.

This paper examines the novel Native Son (1940) by Richard Wright (1908-1960). When the main character, Bigger Thomas, walks out of Chicago’s Black Belt to work as a chauffeur for the Daltons, a family of white liberals, and kills their daughter by accident, he interacts with numerous white characters. Bigger’s perspective dismisses the Daltons and other white people as particles of a huge mountain of hate. The only exceptions to this are Jan Erlone and Boris Max, the two communist characters who succeed in establishing their humanity to Bigger and win his trust. This article reconsiders white liberals beyond the way they are presented through Bigger’s dominant perspective and the way they are generally seen by critics. Keywords: white liberals, Richard Wright, Native Son, race relations
