AbstractThe microstructure evolution of U-Nb alloys during solidification and consequent cooling process was simulated using a cellular automaton (CA) model. By using this model, ϒ phase precipitation and monotectoid decomposition were simulated, and dendrite morphology of ϒ phase, Nb microsegregation and kinetics of monotectoid decomposition were obtained. To validate the model, an ingot of U-5.5Nb (wt.%) was produced and temperature measuring experiment was carried out. As-cast microstructure at different position taken from the ingot was investigated by using optical microscope and SEM. The effect of cooling rate on ϒ phase precipitation and monotectoid decomposition of U-Nb alloys was also studied. The simulated results were compared with the experimental results and the capability of the model for quantitatively predicting the microstructure evolution of U-Nb alloys during solidification and consequent cooling process was assessed.

Abstract The examined material comprised two grades of corrosion-resistant cast steel, namely GX2CrNiMoN25-6-3 and GX2CrNiMoCuN25-6-3- 3, used for example in elements of systems of wet flue gas desulphurisation in power industry. The operating conditions in media heated up to 70°C and containing Cl' and SO4 ions and solid particles produce high erosive and corrosive wear. The work proposes an application of the σ phase as a component of precipitation strengthening mechanism in order to increase the functional properties of the material. The paper presents the results of examination of the kinetics of σ phase precipitation at a temperature of 800°C and at times ranging from 30 to 180 minutes. Changes in the morphology of precipitates of the σ phase were determined using the value of shape factor R. Resistance to erosion-corrosion wear of duplex cast steel was correlated with the kinetics of sigma phase precipitating.

The addition of Sn to the Ti-Mo system can diminish the formation of ω phase and slow down the precipitation kinetics of α phase due to the low atomic diffusivity of Sn atoms in Ti. To explore α phase precipitation in Ti-13Mo and Ti-13Mo-6Sn (wt.%) alloys, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was applied using different heating rates to determine ω phase dissolution, α phase precipitation and β transus temperatures. The DSC results were then used to determine the aging heat treatment temperatures. Samples were heat-treated at 600 °C for 1 h and 24 h to examine microstructure features. The addition of Sn to Ti-13Mo alloy was found to increase the β phase lattice parameter, increasing β transus temperatures and resulting in microstructures with heterogeneous and coarser α phase precipitation.
