AbstractIn this article we explore the relationship between semiotic analysis of images and quantitative analysis of vast image corpora, in particular the work produced by Lev Manovich and the Cultural Analytics Lab, called “Media Visualization.” Media Visualization has been chosen as corpus because of its metavisual operation (images are visualized and analyzed by images) and its innovating way of conceiving analysis: by visual instruments. In this paper semiotics is used as an approach to Media Visualization and taken as an object of study as well, especially visual semiotics. In this sense, a comparison between visual semiotics (close reading of small corpora) and quantitative analyses of images (distant reading of vast collections) are conducted from a semiotic point of view. Post-Greimassian semiotics guides this study with respect to the issue of the image-within-an-image and metavisual visualization; Peircean semiotics is employed to explain and develop the notion of diagram.

Abstract The relationship of F.M Dostoevsky with Jews attracted the attention of numerous scholars throughout the years, many of whom attempted to grapple with the views of the great writer and their origin. In this article we will attempt to show this relationship by analyzing six of Dostoevsky’s greatest novels, written through the entirety of his career. We are analyzing these novels using Distant Reading in conjunction with Close Reading, tools that are commonly used in the field of digital humanities, which enabled us to show visually the extent of F.M. Dostoevsky’s engagement with this topic. The study poses two research questions: 1. To what extent did the writer use the more denigrating term “Zhid”? 2. Can we see a correlation between the writer’s portrayal of Jews with the definition of Anti-Semitism as it was known during his era? The obtained results show that there is clearly a correlation between the definition of anti-Semitism as it was understood at the time of Dostoevsky and the “Jew” as depicted in his novels, as the financial motif is paramount in the depiction of Jews as this is the central topic in 49% of the negative sentences in which the word “Jew” appears, with 59% of these sentences classified as stereotypes. The negative financial stereotype constitutes 32% of the entire corpus. In addition, we found the term “Zhid” is commonly used by the writer, a variation of which constitutes 75% of the total terms used to depict Jews.

Renewable energy sources have a large potential to contribute the sustainable development as environmentally and socioeconomically. However, the existing literature includes theoretical framework in general and there is a lack of both comprehensive theoretical and empirical framework on the relationship between sustainable development and RE technologies. This paper aims to theoretically synthesise the literature on renewable energy technologies and sustainable development for Turkey, and then classify the results by broad categories. After all, the present paper uses conceptual and quantitative analysis, which reviews each concept with conceptual framework and evaluates data with quantitative method. From this point of view, this paper attempts to make a contribution by developing a conceptual framework which allows a wide-ranging analysis of the impact of renewable energy on sustainability and which can be empirically applied to classify these benefits in Turkey.

It is shown that the use of the divergence measure for expressing the information content of the results of a quantitative analysis is justified only then if we need not to expect the rise of a systematic, i.e., statistically significant mean error. However, unless we can exclude the rise of a systematic error we have to adopt the information measure I(r, p, p0) proposed earlier; then of course every even statistically insignificant mean error has effect upon the information content. It is studied the relationship of this measure to another information measure used in a specific case for expressing the information content of biased results of a quantitative analysis.

This article argues for a clearer framework of internet-based “memes”. The science of memes, dubbed ‘memetics’, presumes that memes remain “copying units” following the popularisation of the concept in Richard Dawkins’ celebrated work, The Selfish Gene (1976). Yet Peircean semiotics and biosemiotics can challenge this doctrine of information transmission. While supporting a precise and discursive framework for internet memes, semiotic readings reconfigure contemporary formulations to the – now-established – conception of memes. Internet memes can and should be conceived, then, as habit-inducing sign systems incorporating processes involving asymmetrical variation. So, drawing on biosemiotics, Tartu-Moscow semiotics, and Peircean semiotic principles, and through a close reading of the celebrated 2011 Internet meme Rebecca Black’s Friday, this article proposes a working outline for the definition of internet memes and its applicability for the semiotic analysis of texts in new media communication.

Despite much work on the iron compounds found on invertebrate and vertebrate teeth, no interspecific quantitative analyses of iron compounds in fish teeth have ever been conducted, nor in any vertebrate has such a study related the iron concentrations to the feeding ecology. This study reveals that ferric iron exists on the tooth cap of eight species of chaetodontid butterflyfishes. The iron layer appears early in tooth development and is darkest, and presumably more concentrated, towards the tooth tip. There are significant differences among the eight species, with those that feed on harder prey having more iron than those that feed on softer-bodied prey. Furthermore, there exist differences among the species that correlate with the degree of morphological specialization for feeding on hard-bodied prey. The iron layer, which has been shown by others to be harder than the underlying enameloid, probably represents a specialization to harden the teeth, resisting abrasion and cracking.

Webtoon is one of the mediums in delivering thoughts, point of view and life values with others; one of them is sweet home webtoon. By using visual Semiotic analysis, this study aimed to identify signs used in the Webtoon Sweet Home and to interpret the meanings of the Semiotic signs used in the Webtoon. The data source of this study is the serial comic entitled Sweet Home in the Webtoon which were technically collected using the qualitative method and visual materials in addition to applying the LINE Webtoon. Twenty six data were analyzed using the Visual Semiotic study proposed by Charles Sanders Peirce, including representamen, object and interpretant. Additionally, this study used three steps in interpreting the signs namely, non-verbal communicative legisign, framing techniques and communicative act. The study found that legisign was used on the panels in the Webtoon Sweet Home has general information in which the writer wishes to tell the readers. The legisign represents the meaning of the images portrayed in the Webtoon. Furthermore, the non-verbal communication legisign was identified based on facial expression, body language, posture and gesture. The framing technique concern what image shows, and the communicative act was analyzed based on the verbal sign found the Webtoon Sweet Home.

Whitsleblowing is one of the positive practices in organizations that are able to raise the level of integrity among the members of an organization. However, the roles of whistleblowing also inevitably invites a response, especially among members of the organization itself. This is because such practices are viewed as one factor that may be detrimental to the organization in addition to revealing the reporter (whistleblower) to some external threats and intimidation of discrimination within the organization. This paper is an attempt to examine the relationship between perceptions of members of the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) Contingent of Perak through the role of whistleblowing practices to increase the perception of the integrity of the members. Next, identify the purpose of the whistleblowing and its effect on the integrity of the members of the organization. This study used a descriptive quantitative analysis to identify patterns of relationship that exists between the perception of whistleblowing practices with perceptions of increased integrity based on three basic variables of demographic factors, response to whistleblowing and the impact of making the report. The results showed that members of the Perak’s police have a positive perception of whistleblowing practices which are seen to be done in improving the integrity of the members. Keywords: whistleblowing, perception, RMP members, culture, integrity, organization, influence.

This article aims to explore the relationship between the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) and the Ministry of Villages (Kemendes) from theconstitutional law and state administrative law point of view. The second concerns of this research is the disharmony and problem between the two ministries. From the constitutional law point of view, it turns out that what the Ministry of Home Affairs is doing, is closer to the object of its discussion. The method used in this research is normative legal research bycomparingthe constitutional law and state administrative law to obtain clarity regarding the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Village. The result shows that the Ministry of Village approached the science of state administrative law, namely to revive or give spirits to the village. Disharmonization began to exist since the inception of the Ministry of Village. The root of disharmony itself was the improper application of constitutional foundations in the formation of the Village Law. It would be better if the government reassess the constitutional foundation for the village.

Several studies have shown that the success of interregional cooperation may be influenced by coordination, commitment, participation, variance of cooperation, structure, format of cooperation, and political will. Nevertheless, these factors do not stand alone since actor relations as a determining aspect is capable of driving those factors effectively. This article aims to examine the aspect of actor relations as a contributing factor that determines successful cooperation among regions. This is a qualitative research with the policy of inter-regional cooperation of the Banjarbakula Program, South Kalimantan Province from February 2017 to February 2018, set as its object of study. The result of this study states that the success of inter-regional cooperation is influenced by the relationship of actors in development factors as suggested by previous experts. The actors involved in the inter-regional cooperation examined in this case had become triggers of coordination, commitment, and participation toward success and failure, as well as the effectiveness of regional cooperation policy. Structural obstacles, ego-centric character, minimum budget availability, and non-visionary planning could be overcome as long as actor relations were properly managed.
