Physiotherapy pain curricula in Finland: a faculty survey

Abstract Background and aims Despite the recognition of pain as a global health problem and advancements achieved in what is known about effective pain management, pain education for undergraduate health care professionals remains insufficient. This study investigated the content of pain curricula and the time allocated to pain education on physiotherapy programs at bachelor’s level at Universities of Applied Sciences (UASs) in Finland. Methods A web-based survey questionnaire was sent to the directors of the physiotherapy programs at all the Finnish UASs (n=15) where physiotherapy is taught at bachelor’s level. The questionnaire consisted of 14 questions covering basic concepts and the science of pain, pain assessment, pain management, and the adequacy of pain curricula. Each UAS completed one questionnaire i.e. returned one official opinion. Results The response rate was 80% (n=12). The mean for the total number of contact hours of pain education was 74 (standard deviation 34.2). All UASs had integrated pain education. In addition to this 42% (n=5) of the UASs had a separate pain course. The UASs offering such a course over and above the integrated pain education had twice the amount of pain content education compared to those UASs that only had integrated pain education (mean 103 h vs. 53 h, p=0.0043). Most of the education was devoted to conditions where pain is commonly a feature, manual therapy, and electrical agents for pain control. The biopsychosocial model of pain, cognitive behavioral methods of pain management, physician management, and multidisciplinary management were the least covered topics. Five UASs (42%) payed attention to the International Association for the Study of Pain curriculum outline and only 33% (n=4) considered their pain education to be sufficient. Conclusions Our results indicate that more contact hours are devoted to pain education on the Finnish UASs’ physiotherapy programs at bachelor’s level, than has previously been reported in faculty surveys. A separate pain course is one way to ensure a sufficient amount of pain education. Overall, despite a sufficient time devoted to pain education, some essential pain contents were inadequately covered. Implications The study contributes information on how pain education can be organized on physiotherapy programs at undergraduate level. Besides a sufficient amount of pain education, which can be ensured by a separate pain course, attention should be paid to pain education content being up-to-date. This could help in estimating the different proportions of pain content needed in educational settings. Efforts should also be made at keeping integrated pain education well-coordinated and purposeful. There is a need for further research estimating the effectiveness of pain education according to the different ways in which it is organized. There is also a need to investigate whether more hours allocated to pain education results in better understanding and professional skills.

Abstract Background Pain affects a person’s physical and psychological well-being, work performance and productivity. Working population bear their pain and continue to work which may contribute to the worsening of their pain condition. However, their pain situation was not well-examined. Objective The aim of the study was to explore the prevalence of acute and chronic pain in the working population in Hong Kong, understand their pain management strategies and determine their preferences with regard to the use of electronic pain management materials. Methods This was an exploratory online survey. The participants’ pain history, their preferences in methods of pain management, the source of the pain management education that they had received, sources and preferences in relation to the use of the Internet for pain education, and the participants’ demographic characteristics were collected. Results A total of 210 participants joined the study, 67% of whom were experiencing pain. Of the group in pain, 71.6% were in chronic pain that has persisted for 3 months or more. Pain intensities ranged from 2.82 to 3.82 on a 10-point numeric scale. Of the participants, 85.7% reported not receiving adequate pain management education, and 91.4% of those agreed pain services were inadequate. Websites and health care professionals were the sources from which they obtained their pain management education. Conclusions The high prevalence of pain in the working population requires special attention. Health care professionals should be proactive and an online pain management programme can be a solution to address the critical problem of pain in the working population.

This note describes how integrating refugees into programs of social work education at universities and universities of applied sciences in Germany influenced the education provided, especially in rural areas where student bodies tend to be homogeneous groups. The refugees enrolled in social work courses changed those mostly homogeneous groups of students not only with their presence but moreover by introducing new perspectives on course content. As the changes prompted shifts in the global mindedness of fellow students and the teaching staff, the quality of the programs was enhanced.

Introduction: The emerging infection of COVID-19 was initiated from Wuhan, China, have been spread to more than 210 countries around the globe including India. Now India is 4th position in the world scenario of COVID-19 with 426910 infected cases and 13,703 deaths by 22 June 2020. In the northeast, Assam is in highest position with 5,586 cases and 9 deaths till now. Awareness is the key factor for prevention of spread of COVID-19 among general people. In view of these contexts, the present study was undertaken to assess awareness of COVID-19 among general population of Northeast India. The aim of the study was to assess the level of awareness among general population of Northeast India regarding COVID-19. Materials and Methods: A web based survey was conducted among 185 people of deferent states of northeast during the period of April and May 2020. A self-structured validated questionnaire used for collecting information. Descriptive analysis was performed to represent the study characteristics. Awareness among the study population was categories into 3 Levels i.e Adequate, Moderately Adequate and Inadequate. Level of Adequate awareness considered as > (Mean + SD, Moderately Adequate as (Mean-SD)-(Mean + SD) and Inadequate as < (Mean-SD. Results & Discussion: Overall awareness on COVID-19, majority of respondents, 97(52.4%) have moderately adequate awareness. 49(26.5%) of respondents have adequate awareness and 39(21.1%) have inadequate awareness. It reveals that overall level of awareness is not satisfactory. Less than half of people were aware adequately about the COVID-19. Highest percentage of adequate, 36(44.4%) and inadequate, 21(25%) awareness reported from Manipur, Highest percentage of moderately adequate awareness reported from Nagaland, 17 (85%). Slightly more than half of respondents were aware about the general information, 102 (67.45%) and risk factors, 119 (64.3%) of COVID-19. Most of the respondents were aware about the mode of transmission, 176(95.1%), meaning of community transmission, 135 (72.9%), common sign and symptoms, 154(83.2%), and incubation periods 164(88.6%) of COVID-19. Regarding prevention of COVID-19, average awareness of total respondents was 154 (83.24%). Similar percentage of all levels of awareness have seen in male and female both. Conclusion: The virus is primarily spread between people during close contact, most often via small droplets produced by coughing, sneezing, and talking. Lack of awareness and negligence of general people regarding mode of transmission of COVID-19 which created community transmission. General people of Northeast still required awareness regarding COVID-19. There is a need of regular awareness programme among the general population by the health care professionals.

Objectives: To observe the method of pain assessment and pain management intervention performed by nurses in the PACU. Methods and Design: A QI prospective observational study was conducted to observe nurse’s pain assessment and management of thirty (30) patients from the time of PACU admission to discharge. The sample size was determined using the sealed envelope power calculator. Data Collection Included: patients demographics, the method and frequency of pain assessments as well as modalities of the pain intervention and the type and average dose of pain medications administered by PACU nurses. Data analysis was done using Microsoft excel. Results: No validated pain assessment tool was used in the PACU.  The majority of patients 67%, n=20) had no pain assessments or pain interventions. When performed, the frequency of pain assessments recorded were low, 70% of patients had 1-2 assessments. The principal pain management intervention was pharmacological with the use of opioids, accounting for 96%. Conclusion: Post-operative pain management in the PACU at GPHC does not meet accepted standards of care. More frequent nursing pain assessment using a validated pain assessment tool is required. Monotherapy with the opioid was the main pain intervention for pain management. Recommendations: Effective pain management begins with the appropriate pain assessment; therefore pain management education programs for health care professionals are essential. Also, the implementation of a standardized pain assessment tool, a standardized post anesthetic order sheet with a multimodal approach to pain management and restructuring the post-anesthetic record to allow for documentation of pain assessment will greatly improve pain management in the PACU.
