A Quantitative Evaluation of the Lipid Composition of Leaves of Aleurites montana as a Consequence of Growth under 0.3 ppm SO2 in the Atmosphere

Abstract Gassing during 14 days of Aleurites plants with 0.3 ppm SO2 leads to quantitative modifications of the lipid composition of leaves. The ratio of phospholipids to glycolipids is shifted from 1:3 in control plants to 1:1.8 in SO2-plants. Glycolipids decrease from 62% of total lipids in control plants to 50% in SO2-plants. On the other hand phospholipids increase from 20% in control plants to 28% of total lipids in SO2-plants. This implies that not only the thylakoid membrane but also the mitochondrial membranes and cell membranes of tonoplasts and of the plasmalemma suffer modifications under the influence of SO2. With respect to the fatty acid composition, despite the drastic change in the lipid composition no alteration in comparison to control plants is seen. Chlorophylls increase in SO2-plants by 24% . Also the content of β-carotene, and of the xanthophylls lutein, violaxanthin and neoxanthin is increased. Only zeaxanthin exhibits a decrease. From the changes in the chlorophyll and carotenoid content it can be concluded that in SO2-plants the light-harvesting-complex (LHCP) is stronger developed (P. He, A. Radunz, K. P. Bader and G. H. This report from Golembeski and Emery adds to the small quantity of literature in this field. Drs Golembeski and Emery claim that they are presenting information that counters our statement,"The abnormalities in fatty acid composition of the cystic fibrosis milk may contraindicate its use for the nursing infant." However, no data regarding fatty acid composition were presented. In their Table, only total lipids are shown. In our study, we acknowledged that mean total lipids were sufficient to supply the energy needs of the nursing infant.

Refining of crude red fruit oil (CRFO) through the degumming and neutralization steps intended to produce oil free of impurities (non triglycerides) such as phospholipids, proteins, residues and carbohydrates, and also reducing the amount of free fatty acids (FFA). This study aims to determine the effect of red fruit oil purification through degumming and neutralization stages on chemical properties, fatty acid composition, carotenoid content and tocopherol of red fruit oil (RFO). The results showed that degumming of CRFO did not affect the decrease in water content, FFA levels, peroxide numbers, iodine values, carotenoids and tocopherols content; but decrease in levels of phosphorus, β-carotene and α-tocopherol. Neutralization of degummed-RFO (DRFO) did not affect the decrease in water content, iodine value, carotenoid, tocopherol and α-tocopherol; but the FFA levels, peroxide number, phosphorus and β-carotene levels decreased significantly. The fatty acid composition of RFO was dominated by unsaturated fatty acids (± 75%), which increases through degumming and neutralization stages. β-carotene is more sensitive than α-tocopherol during refining process of crude oil, but in general, this process can improve the RFO quality.

The levels of fatty acids, phospholipids and sterols were determined in the samples of Basella alba and Basella rubra commonly consumed  in the South-Western Nigeria by gas chromatography. Results showed that the crude fat levels were 4.40 and 4.41 % in the Basella alba and  Basella rubra samples respectively. The fatty acid composition of Basella alba and Basella rubra samples shows that the SFA was 26.0 and  24.9 %, MUFA was 1.19 and 1.24 % and PUFA was 72.5 and 73.8% respectively. The other quality parameters of Basella alba and Basella  rubra were found: PUFA/SFA, 2.79 and 2.97; MUFA/SFA, 0.046 and 0.050; n-6/n-3, 2.47 and 3.31; LA/ALA, 0.890 and 1.12 and EPSI  (PUFA/MUFA), 60.8 and 59.5 respectively. Phospholipids present in Basella alba and Basella rubra were 1679 and 1920 mg/100g respectively.  In the group of phytosterols, sitosterol was highest with values of 196 mg/100g and 275 mg/100g in Basella alba and Basella rubra samples respectively. Linear correlation at a = 0.05, df: n-1 showed that significant difference exists between the fatty acid, quality parameters of  the fatty acids phospholipids and sterols.Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind. Conidia and mycelial cells of Fonsecaea pedrosoi ATCC 46428 were obtained for analyses of lipid composition. Total lipids, phospholipids, sterols, and qualitative sterols and fatty acid composition were determined. A higher lipid content was detected in conidia than in mycelial cells of Fonsecaea pedrosoi, which could not be attributed to total sterols and phospholipids. In both forms of this fungus, ergosterol was the only sterol detected. The minimal inhibitory concentration of amphotericin B was lower for conidia than for mycelium. It is found that gamma radiation leads to a significant decrease in the skin of rabbits content of these fatty acids, as meristinіс, pantadekanovaya, palmitic, palmitoleic, linoleic, arachidonic, and at the end issledvany, ie 76 Tide day, the concentration of fatty acids increased, and meristinіс palmitoleic and close to the physiological norm.

The levels of fatty acids, phospholipids and sterols were determined in the brains of she-goat and castrated goat found in Ekiti State, Nigeria by gas chromatography. Results showed that the crude fat levels were 9.98 and 10.2 % in the brains of she-goat and castrated goat respectively. The fatty acid composition of she-goat and castrated goat brain shows that the SFA was 40.6 and 42.7 %, MUFA was 37.1 and 38.7 % and PUFA was 20.9 and 22.3% respectively. The other parameters of she-goat and castrated goat brain were found: PUFA/SFA, 0.490 and 0.548; MUFA/SFA, 0.869 and 0.953; n-6/n-3, 0.775 and 11.7; LA/ALA, 0.876 and 28.0; AA/DGLA, 6.05 and 17.4; EPA/DHA, 1.00 and 5.89 and EPSI (PUFA/MUFA), 0.564 and 0.575 respectively. Phospholipids were present in she-goat and castrated goat with a value range of 2365 and 3047 mg/100g respectively. Among the sterols, only cholesterol was of any significant level with values of 1353 mg/100g (she-goat brain) and 1355 mg/100g (castrated goat brain). Linear correlation at ? = 0.05, df: n-1 showed that no significant difference exists between the crude fats, phospholipids and sterols except in the fatty acids parameters.Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind.
