The Middle East has long contended with the title of the region most lackingin democratic state structures, and while several countries endeavor toenforce a form of democracy, yet others preserve the frameworks that efficientlysustain their monarchies, revenue, and power status in the area. Thetwin questions of how and why democracy has proved elusive in theMiddleEast forms the crux of the collection of essays comprised within Schlumberger’stome: Debating Arab Authoritarianism: Dynamics and Durabilityin Nondemocratic Regimes.Spanning Morocco to Oman, via Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, theauthoritarian mode of governance is surveyed through an assessment of thedurability of regimes, the role of Islamist political parties, intra-regimedynamics, and the economic aspects of political reform. Divided into foursections, the book’s structure incorporates key elements of Arab authoritarianism:“State-Society Relations and Political Opposition,” “The Regimes,”“The Economy and the Polity,” and “The InternationalArena.” That the sectionsretain a subtle reluctance to address the link between the repressivecapacities ofArab states and their longevity, as well as the concept that Islamis incompatible with democracy, is conspicuous, yet prudent. Far fromretreadingworn theories, the contributors provide fresh conceptual and comparativeanalyses of individual countries and the region on a wider level, inaddition to prospects for the respective regimes ...

This chapter establishes a new context for reading the political economy of Malthus and Ricardo. It is the extended debate over the role of theory and practice in politics and political reform, a contest that Edmund Burke launched by publishing his hostile response to the French Revolution, Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790). In attempting to defend theory, both Mackintosh and Stewart engaged in sophisticated rhetoric that attempted to portray Burke’s veneration of custom and usage as philosophically naïve at the same time as they insisted on the necessity of theory for a science of politics. It is in these defensive postures that both Mackintosh and Stewart came to articulate the idea of a ‘theorist’ of politics.

This chapter surveys the ideological underpinnings and aspirations of the key reforms of Mustafa Kemal’s reign. The philosophical tenets associated with Kemalism had long incubated within the folds of the late Ottoman political elite. Like other Young Turks who reinvented themselves as partisans of the young republic, Atatürk and his supporters viewed the postwar era as an unequaled opportunity to carry out and refine policies originally devised to save the Ottoman Empire. Declaring a republic, revising the constitution, adopting European systems of law, and redefining the role of religion were the first steps of a broader campaign aimed at refashioning society along unitary lines. Once engendered, Mustafa Kemal’s revolution was aimed at producing a Turkey where each citizen spoke Turkish, worked productively, and behaved in ways that warranted the republic’s ascendency as a “civilized state.”

Orality can be termed as a ‘live experience’ of rhetoric, which enables the listener to engage with what is being said. Within the framework of oral culture, memory can serve as a tool of potent interaction and subversive tendencies to expose exploitative urges and also to produce contrary effects. Memory supplanted with rhetoric, the power of language and arguments, can respond to the situation of the oppressed. The role of rhetoric in motivating action can also take us to a world of verbal and symbolic narratives of politics. In performances like Rongphorpi Rongbe and Gaantha: The First Text, the performative of rhetoric not only offers subversive approach to history/history-making but also provides opportunity for the evocation of the past in an animated language that delivers activism and campaigns for a political reform.
