t can be said that the town statute of Split and the stipulations concerning the everyday life in this medieval town are not characterized by the aim to create an ideal city and, in this, they are far from the long-range urban planning contained in the statute of Dubrovnik. The fact that less than five per cent of the stipulations in the statute of Split relate to urban planning ought to be understood as indicatingthat the town, set in Diocletian’s Palace and determined by its structures, had already been defined to a large extent and that it functioned well and fulfilled the needs of its inhabitants. Thirty chapters of the statute deal with different aspects of the development of medieval Split and its everyday maintenance. This article focuses on the relationship between the local government and private property, that is, with the cases of private spaces being transformed into public spaces and the ‘ritualistic erasures’, that is, the demolition of houses whose owners committed treason and broke the law. This phenomenon of demolition as setting example was not limited to medieval Split but was recorded in other Dalmatian communes (in Omiš and Dubrovnik as late as the eighteenth century) and this discussion of it is based on the examination of a wider set of primary sources.

RESUMOPretende-se, nesse artigo, analisar a relação entre comércio de rua e processos de requalificação do espaço público, a partir de uma abordagem geográfica do problema, buscando-se delinear as táticas e estratégias dos agentes envolvidos e suas trajetórias e práticas no cotidiano da metrópole. Busca-se também traçar um panorama preliminar dos contextos conjunturais dos embates relativos aos comerciantes e prestadores de serviço de rua, frente às ações dos agentes hegemônicos de produção do espaço metropolitano e aos processos de requalificação/refuncionalização dos espaços públicos na Capital baiana, a partir do final dos anos 1990 até os dias atuais.Palavras-chave: comércio de rua; serviços de rua; espaço público; requalificação; territorialização; metrópole. ABSTRACTThe aim of this paper is to analyze the relationship between street trade and requalification processes in public spaces based on a geographical approach to the problem. It is intended to pursue and, therefore, make explicit the tactics and strategies of the agents involved in those projects and their trajectories and practices in the everyday life of the metropolis. We hope to outline the conjunctural contexts of the existing conflicts too, which are related to street traders and service providers, as opposed to the actions of the hegemonic agents of production of the metropolitan space and to the processes of requalification/refunctionalization of public spaces in the capital of Bahia state - Salvador, from the late 1990s to the present day.Keywords: street trade; street services; public space; requalification; territorialization; metropolis.

Kalijodo has a long history in terms of gambling, prostitution, human trafficking and other illicit activities. Although it is a green belt area, the location had always being filled with semipermanent buildings. The area was changed its meaning in 2016 when the late Governor of Ahok with the help of the police and army, eradicated these housing and transformed this place as the community center (RPTRA-Ruang Publik Terpadu Ramah Anak). Together with Yori Antar, Basuki changed Kalijodo into a new center for Jakarta with its mural and skatepark. Former illicit users have been pushed out from the site. Some built a temporary shelter under the highway bridge while others went to their villages. After the fall of Basuki due to the blasphemy crime, the image of RPTRA Kalijodo was contested. Within a day, the area was filled with illegal parking and prostitution returned in different forms taking place under the highway bridge. Layers of meaning and use of Kalijodo transforms rapidly and in results changes the image of the city. Through observation, interviews and archival research, this paper analyses the contestation of the city image by investigating the relationship between the top-down approach and the everyday life uses of space.

Este ensaio visual trata do mundo da vida cotidiana de camponeses agroextrativistas no Pará, especificamente no baixo Tocantins, região das ilhas do município de Mocajuba. Segue o método da etnografia sensorial, discute a relação entre corpo, ambiente e formas de aprendizagem técnica com a virtuosidade dos indicadores socioambientais e argumenta que tais técnicas não são transmitidas, mas ensinadas e aprendidas por meio de um complexo engajamento sensorial com o ambiente.Palavras-chave: Camponeses agroextrativistas. A proposta deste artigo é colocar a praça como espaço de construção do conhecimento ambiental, por meio da educação não formal. A pesquisa tem como objetivo compreender como ocorre a relação entre os processos de percepção ambiental e as práticas socioespaciais na formação de lugares urbanos. Para tanto, este estudo buscou analisar o cotidiano de um conjunto de atores (crianças, idosos, transeuntes e jovens) na Praça Mary de Pinho, na cidade de Imperatriz-MA. O levantamento, de cunho etnográfico, inclui observação, diário de campo, conversações, produção de fotografias e descrição das interações entre os agentes do espaço. What do we talk about when we talk about everyday life? This chapter considers everyday life as a “metasystem” in Moscovici’s terms, a normative system that checks and organizes knowledge and thought. Looking at social representations theory, the chapter considers the structuring power of this metasystem, referring to two kinds of research where the absence (for deprived children) or suspension (in the first COVID-19 lockdown in Italy) of everyday life causes delays in children’s development and dismay in adults. The suspension of ordinary life highlights the social representation of “normality.” The structure of the “everyday life” metasystem is largely taken for granted, and this calls into question the relationship between the taken-for-granted and the knowledge that constructs social representations or, in other words, between stability and change in common knowledge.

This article reviews the literature on black geographies as it relates to the everyday work of urban planners. We outline the major claims and contributions of this scholarship to deepen our understanding of the relationship between the social and physical worlds. This article argues that this literature is a critical, yet missing, contribution to the field of urban planning because it provides different ways of knowing and understanding the experience of racial difference and therefore challenges us to invite more diverse views to the table and build more informed professional practices, pedagogical foundations, and empirical scholarship.

Ever since the late eighteenth century, no subject has been more prominent in histories of ‘the transition to colonialism’ in south Asia, than the issue of taxation. In particular, the complex system of agrarian taxation that was developed under the Mughal empire, and further elaborated by various post-Mughal regimes, has often been seen as the defining institution of both the pre-colonial and colonial states. What the British called ‘land revenues’, which included taxes on land proper (mal) and taxes on trade and markets (sair), were the main source of income for both Indian and British rulers. Assessments of the impact of colonial rule have often depended on supposed changes in the tax regime. Since the nineteenth century historians have tended to focus their attention on the relationship between the land tax and structures of agrarian property. They have generally argued that British rule both substantially increased the tax burden, and modified structures of agrarian tenure by splicing together rights of revenue collection and private property in land. But they have focused much more on early colonial policies with regard to private landed property, and less on the issue of the actual tax assessment. This paper takes up the issue of the land tax demand (known as jama in the terminology of Mughal and post-Mughal administration) tracing British debates about tax assessments through the first three decades of colonial rule in Bengal.

Over the past three decades, the study of material culture has become a pervasive feature of historical scholarship. From art to shoes, from porcelain to glass, ‘things’ are increasingly viewed as a useful medium through which to reconstruct what mattered to historical actors in everyday life. Taking its lead from this vast scholarship, this discussion examines how material culture was integrated into a programme of devotion, edification and religious instruction within England’s episcopal palaces, a group of buildings in which the relationship between the material and the spiritual was particularly fraught. Adopting a long chronological span, from 1500 to 1800, it analyses how that relationship evolved into the eighteenth century, a period noted for its proliferation of things and apparently ‘secular’ character.
