This study is aimed to compare the understanding of the concepts of secondary school students (junior and senior high school) and pre-service physics teachers in direct current electric circuits. This research was survey research using the quantitative descriptive method. The results showed that there were no significant difference among the junior high school, senior high school, and pre-service physics teacher students with the categories classified as sufficient for junior high school and pre-service physics teacher. However, senior high school students were still relatively weak. The difficulties were found in interpreting formulas and conceptual errors. This research provides practical benefits to the concept of electrical circuits, especially about the low mastery of student’s concepts. The same mistakes at every level of education showed that there are misconceptions that are difficult to eliminate. It is needed to have more effort to master the concept deeply.

The article has critically assessed the information sent to the public, including teachers, on the results of external examinations contained in the Central Examination Board (CEB) reports. Basing on the analysis of two sources of information decoded from the CEB reports and the analysis of the database containing the results of examinations, 93% of lower secondary school students, it has been showed that about half of the population "failed" the lower secondary school exam in science and mathematics. Therefore they should not continue their high school education. The analysis of data decoded from the CEB report is in line with the results obtained from 93% of students. Therefore, it is advisable to conduct similar analyzes of contemporary CEB reports on students achievement after the new primary school which is operating in the new education system after liquidation of junior high schools.

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is one of the primary 21st-century skills that Indonesian schools have not optimally developed. The present study was aimed at 1) presenting the profile of students’ HOTS in Malang and 2) investigating the influence of grades on students’ HOTS. This quantitative study involved 559 students from 18 schools in Malang municipality as the participants. The data were collected using ten essay questions as the instrument and analyzed through descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA as the data analysis techniques chosen in this study. This study revealed that first, the students of Junior High School in grades VII, VIII, and IX at Malang acquired a low level of HOTS. Second, the students of Senior High School performed an excellent level of HOTS. Third, there was a significant influence of the student's grades to the level of the students’ HOTS in which senior high school students accomplished a higher level HOTS than junior high school students. Therefore, to improve this essential skill, the students in Indonesian schools should be given as much exposure to teaching and assessment based on HOTS.

The article presents the results of the study of students’ language competences who attend the first secondary school classes. In 2019, as a result of the education reform, two groups of students started their education in the first grades: junior high school graduates and eight-grade primary school graduates. Pre-secondary education in the case of students leaving primary school lasted a year shorter. Both groups took the exam at the end of lower junior high school or elementary school, respectively, and studied according to a different core curriculum. During the study, it was assumed that thanks to the education that lasted a year longer and was based on a different core curriculum, lower secondary school students should achieve better results in terms of creating an argumentative text and in terms of selected language skills. Both groups of students wrote the same test to confirm or reject the thesis. The results of the study showed that both groups of students achieved comparable results. In some areas, younger students have even outranked junior high school students. At the same time, it turned out that the lower stage of education was completed by students with very different competences. Both among junior high school and primary school students there are very good and very weak students, while in the group of junior high school students there is a large percentage of very weak students. This may prove that for many students three years of lower secondary school were a waste of time, and the last two years of primary school were enough to master the tested skills.

In current study, the objective was to identify the relationship between teaching style and level of depression among Kenyan junior and senior high school students. The study was conducted based on Kenyan educational panel survey. The methodology was longitudinal as students were studied in 2013 and repeatedly followed in 2017. The sampling was multistage stratified sampling and panel data analysis was used. The total sample size was 654 out of which 320 were male and 334 were female. The results showed that there were significant differences in terms of four perceived teaching style including authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and indifferent among junior high school x² (3,654=123.81, p<.001), and senior high school, ?² (3,654=62.91, p<.001). The finding suggests that teaching style in senior high schools had different pattern in terms of effects on junior high schools. Those junior students who considered their teacher style as more authoritarian showed higher depression compare to those who considered their teacher as authoritative, permissive, and indifferent.  Less depression is also observed among senior high students who perceived there to be permissive compare to other teaching style including authoritative, authoritarian, and indifferent.
