Rice husk, which contains hemicellulose, can be used as a renewable resource to produce xylooligosaccharide (XOS). However, it is difficult to destroy the lignin structure of rice husk. Steam explosion (SE) is an effective method in destroying the lignin structure to enhance the release of hemicellulose and cellulose. In this study, SE pretreatment was used at different high pressures. The results showed that the lignin structure of rice husk could be collapsed by SE pretreatment, and the chemical structures of rice husk were evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The SE pretreatment resulted in the significant increase of XOS content and antioxidant activities. In summary, SE pretreatment under 2.5 MPa was chosen as a good option for the production of XOS from rice husk.

Zizyphus lotus, which belongs to Rhamnaceae family, has been widely used to formulate many healthy food products. The aim of this work was to formulate new functional cookies enriched with different amounts of Zizyphus lotus powder (ZLP; 15%, 30%, 45% and 100%). The chemical properties of ZLP were also determined. The formulated cookies were evaluated for their physicochemical, textural and sensory characteristics. Results revealed that ZLP contained various bioactive components, fatty acids, and antioxidants. ZLP-added cookies demonstrated higher phytochemical and antioxidant activities than control cookies prepared without ZLP. The activity of ZLP cookies was enhanced with increase of ZLP level. Hardness and fracturability (brittleness) of cookies increased with increasing amount of ZLP. Results of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis also revealed the presence of many bioactive compounds in formulated cookies. All cookie samples were generally accepted, but the panelists indicated a higher preference for cookies containing 15% ZLP.

In this study, N,N-(2,4-diamino-1,3,5-triazinyl) diethylenetriamine were synthesized by cyanuric chloride, diethylenetriamine and ammonia with a novel process in three steps, and it can be used as charring agent in intumescent flame retardant. Its chemical structures were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and elemental analysis. Meanwhile, the TGA results showed that triazine-based charring agent had good thermostability. Furthermore, the fire performancce of composites blended by the flame retardant and polypropylene was investigated by vertical burning test. The results revealed good fire retardancy that flame retardant polypropylene with 5.1wt% charring agent, 2.8wt% anti-dripping and 20.1wt% APP, was reached UL-94 V-0 rating.

Soluble polypyrrole was obtained by naturally oxidizing pyrrole in air at room temperature for one to four years. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy were employed to characterize the chemical structures of the naturally oxidized polypyrrole. The electroluminescence from the naturally oxidized polypyrrole was recorded. The electroluminescence of the naturally oxidized polypyrrole was broad with its peak located at about 480 nm. Prototyped thin-film display panels were developed using the naturally oxidized polypyrrole as active medium.
