In this study, the effects of COVID-19 (mortality rate, case rate, and bed capacity) on the stock market was examined within the framework of the efficient market hypothesis. Unlike other studies in the literature, we used the variable of bed capacity besides the mortality rate and case rate variables. The relationship between the mentioned variables, using daily data between December 31 of 2019 and November 10 of 2020, has been analyzed with time-varying symmetric and asymmetric causality tests for China, Germany, the USA, and India. Considering that the responses to positive and negative shocks during the pandemic process may be different and that the results may change depending on time, time-varying symmetric and asymmetric causality tests were used. According to the time-varying symmetric causality test, stock markets in all countries were affected in the period when the cases first appeared. A causal relationship between COVID-19 and country stock markets was found. The results showed that the effects of the case rate and bed capacity on the stock market occurred around the same time in Germany and the United States; however, these dates differed in China and India. According to time-varying asymmetric causality test findings, the asymmetric effect of the pandemic on the stock market in countries emerged during the second wave. The findings showed that the period during which positive and negative information about the pandemic intensified coincided with the period during which the second wave occurred; besides, the results show the effect of this information on the stock market differed as positive and negative shocks.

The focus of this article is to analyse the inter-linkages between eight leading stock markets in Asian continent from the period of July 2011 to February 2018. This period holds relevance as this was the time when Recession 2.0 set in, which adversely affected the developed economies; however, the developing economies withstood the crisis without much of an impact. Co-integration and Granger causality tests were conducted to probe the inter-linkages. Study revealed a positive impact on Asian stock market indices collectively on each of the indexes. The highest number of unidirectional causalities was to KOPSI and NIFTY from rest of the stock indices. Results confirmed that no co-integration relationship existed among the selected indices indicating favourable diversification opportunities. Thus, the study fosters global market participants and policymakers to consider the nitty-gritties of stock market integration so as to benefit from international stock market diversification in the Asian region.

Volatility is the most widespread measure of risk. Volatility modeling allows investors to capture potential losses and investment opportunities. This work aims to examine the impact of the two waves of COVID-19 infections on the return and volatility of the stock market indices of the euro area countries. The study also focuses on other important aspects such as time-varying risk premium and leverage effect. This investigation employed the Threshold GARCH(1,1)-in-Mean model with exogenous dummy variables. Daily returns of the euro area stock markets indices from 4th January 2016 to 31st December 2020 has been used for the analysis. The results reveal that euro area stock markets respond differently to the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, the first wave of COVID-19 infections had a notable impact on stock market volatility of euro area countries with middle-large financial centres while the second wave had a significant impact only on stock market volatility of Belgium.

This paper aims at determining the relationship between the two domestic stock markets of Bangladesh – the Chittagong Stock Market (CSE) and the Dhaka Stock Market (DSE). The daily stock price indices that represent the performance of the two stock markets are collected. In order to find out the interdependent relationship, the Engle-Granger Cointegration test, Granger Causality test, Impulse Response Function, and Variance Decomposition Analysis are employed in this paper. The main finding of this study is that both the stock markets are related in the long run. However, there is a one-way short-run effect from the DSE on the CSE market. The CSE market quickly responds to the shock in the DSE market. But, the DSE market is not responsive to the CSE market. The variance decomposition analysis shows that most of the shocks in the CSE market are explained by its own market. On the other hand, a small number of shocks in the DSE market are explained by the CSE market as well as its own market.

Purpose The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between economic policy uncertainty (EPU) and stock prices during the period from March 2003 to March 2021. Design/methodology/approach The study uses asymmetric and symmetric frequency domain causality tests and focuses on BRIC countries, namely, Brazil, Russia, India and China. Findings The findings of the symmetric causality test confirm unidirectional permanent causality from EPU to stock prices for Brazil and India and bidirectional causality for China. However, according to the asymmetric causality test, the findings for China show that there is no causality between the variables. The results for Brazil and India indicate that there is unidirectional permanent causality from positive components of EPU to positive components of stock prices. Moreover, for Brazil, there is unidirectional temporary causality from the negative components of EPU to the negative components of stock prices. For India, there is temporary causality in the opposite direction. Originality/value The reactions of financial markets to positive and negative shocks differ. In this context, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first attempt to examine the causal relationships between stock prices and uncertainty using an asymmetric frequency domain approach. Thus, the study enables the analysis of the effects of positive and negative shocks in the stock market separately.

This study employed the non-structural VAR econometrics approach to examine the impact of Global Oil (OVX), Financial (VIX), and Gold (GVZ) volatility indices on GCC stock markets using a daily data set spanning from January 5, 2009 to August 16, 2018. From the VAR result obtained, disequilibrium in the global financial volatility (VIX) was able to significantly transmit negative shock to Bahrain and Kuwait stock markets and positive shock on GVZ. While the global Gold volatility was capable of transmitting fairly positive shock to the UAE and VIX market. The OLS also revealed more to the result obtained from VAR as it shows that OVX and VIX can have impact on the GCC stock markets. The causality test revealed that there is a unidirectional causality running from Qatar and UAE to OVX; none of the variables was able to granger cause VIX, while unidirectional causality exist from VIX and UAE to GVZ and VIX and Qatar to Bahrain. VIX and Qatar can granger cause Kuwait stock market, and only Saudi Arabia and Oman have bidirectional causality. Unidirectional causality exists from Saudi Arabia to Qatar, and Qatar is the only stock market capable of causing UAE unidirectionally. Hence, the study concludes that VIX and GVZ are capable of transmitting shocks to three of the six GCC stock markets—(Bahrain, Kuwait and The UAE) negatively (Bahrain and Kuwait) and positively (The UAE). And on this note, the study recommends that appropriate financial and gold transaction policies should be institutionalized so as to mitigate the transmission of shocks into the markets. Also, financial and gold experts who regulate the stock and gold markets especially in Bahrain and Kuwait should watch for any abnormality changes in the volatility movement of the financial and gold markets.

Abstract The aim of this study is the empirical investigation of the long-run relations and the short-term dynamics between two Balkan stock markets: Macedonian and Croatian. The presence of long run common trend between the Macedonian and Croatian stock market indices is identified by applying Johansen’s cointegration maximum eigenvalue and trace tests, while potential causal relations are examined by employing Granger’s causality tests. Data sample spans from January 3rd, 2005 to March 31st, 2017. The stock market indices were found to be co-integrated with significant relationships. A bi-directional pattern of causality is documented between the Macedonian and Croatian returns. This pattern is remarkably stable and suggests significant economic ties between the investors in Macedonian and Croatian stock markets. The findings are important for the investors meaning that they cannot gain diversification benefits of investing in the Croatian or Macedonian stock market.

This study examines how stock market sentiment in a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) stock market may spill over to affect sentiments in other markets in the region. Findings from dynamic conditional correlation models in a generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) framework, traditional Granger causality test and impulse response functions suggest that Kuwait and Qatar stock markets are segregated from other markets in the region. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) markets are well integrated, and any shift in sentiment in either of the two affects the other. Bahrain and Oman are somewhat integrated with the UAE and Saudi stock market sentiments. Thus, when an investor has significant investments in both Saudi Arabia and the UAE, he must be aware of any contagion effect—especially in the case of a stock market panic.

During the past few years, many of the financial markets have gone through devastating effects due to the crisis in one or the other economy of the world. The recent global financial crisis has triggered dramatic movements in various stock markets which may arise from interdependence or contagion between the markets. This article attempts to measure the contagion between the equity markets of Asia and the US stock market. The countries considered in the Asian group are China, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Japan. Most of the Asian economies have experienced drastic higher volatility and uncertainty in the financial markets. If the markets are contagious, then the investors will be unable to reap benefits through international diversification of the portfolio. In such a case, the policymakers will further frame policies so that they can insulate themselves from inflicting heavy damage from various crises. To achieve our goal, we make use of the time-varying copula approach which helps us to study the joint behaviour of the series based on their marginal distribution. Time-varying copula approach can also capture the non-linear dependence in the series and exhibits a rich pattern of tail behaviour. Our findings support the contagion between the Asian stock markets and the US stock market during the global financial crisis. This article also highlights that the increased tail dependence is an important factor for the contagion between the Asian stock markets and the US market.

Based on the daily return and volatility series of the Chinese yuan (RMB)/US dollar (USD) exchange rate and the Shanghai Stock Composite Index, the time-varying long memories of the Chinese currency and stock markets are investigated by comprehensively using the rescaled range (R/S), the modified R/S, and the detrended fluctuation analysis methods. According to the results drawn: (1) the efficiency of the Chinese currency market has not improved significantly, whereas the efficiency of the Chinese stock market has improved steadily, (2) volatility series presents longer memory than return series either in the Chinese currency or stock market and (3) the time-varying Hurst exponent of the Chinese currency market is sensitive to the reform that enhances the flexibility of the RMB exchange rate. Moreover, we find that short-term bidirectional Granger causal relationship exists, but no long-run equilibrium relationship between the time-varying Hurst exponents of the Chinese currency and stock markets was found based on the Granger causality and cointegration tests, respectively.

The Covid 19 pandemic is the first major crisis facing cryptocurrencies. Therefore, the reaction of the cryptocurrency markets is important. News about epidemics affects investors' decisions. Panic index (PIndex) is an index created from news about the Covid 19 outbreak. In the study, it is used to measure the impact of decisions on the crypto money market. As cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin (BTC), Etherium (ETH), and Ripple (XRP), which have the highest transaction volume in the crypto money market, are included in the analysis. The relationship between Panic Index and the three major cryptocurrencies with the largest share in the cryptocurrency market was investigated by Ardl and Hatemi-J asymmetric causality test. Traditional causality tests acknowledge that the effects of positive and negative changes are the same. However, there may be asymmetric information and different investor behaviors in financial markets. In the study, Hatemi-J [1] Asymmetric Causality Test was conducted to examine the asymmetric relationship and symmetric relationship between Pindex and cryptocurrencies by separating them into positive and negative shocks. According to the results of the Hatemi-J causality analysis, positive shocks in the panic index are the cause of negative shocks for all cryptocurrencies. In other words, increases in the panic index are caused to fall the value of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ripple cryptocurrencies decrease. The results show that cryptocurrencies were not a safe haven for the investor during the Covid 19 period, as they acted similarly to other financial assets.
