This study was conducted to investigate the thermoregulation of Holstein cattle in an adapted free-stall facility at IFSULDEMINAS, Campus Inconfidentes, by measuring thermal comfort indices. The experimental period was from the end of December 2012 to the start of January 2013, in a total of 16 days. 12 multiparous, lactating, black-and-white Holstein cows were used in a free-stall system. Rectal temperature, respiratory frequency, ambient temperature and relative humidity were recorded at 3:00 a.m., 7:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. The results demonstrate that despite the temporal variations that occurred throughout the evaluation days, the confined animals maintained their body temperature in balance.

The present study addresses the characteristics of the frequency and segregation of alleles determining the SNP 775C>T polymorphism within the bovine ITGB2 gene in the Black-and-White cattle population as well as in two endemic breeds of Polish Red and Polish White-Back cattle population qualified to the international programme of genetic resource diversity preservation in farm animals. The SNP 775C>T polymorphism revealed three amplified restriction fragments of 31 bp, 77 bp and 108 bp, forming three genotypes CC (31 bp, 77 bp), CT (31 bp, 77 bp, 108 bp) and TT (108 bp). A group of randomly selected Black-and-White cows was characterized by a negligible percentage of homozygous genotypes TT (5.1%) and by a prevailing percentage of heterozygous CT (60.1%) and homozygous CC (34.8%). In contrast, the between breeds analysis revealed that cows involved in the programme of genetic diversity preservation had a high prevalence of homozygotes CC (Polish Red − 55.9%, Polish White-Back − 60.0%), and a low percentage of homozygotes TT (Polish Red − 8.8%, Polish White-Back − 5.7%) in comparison with the Black-and-White cattle population. The degree of homozygosity in groups of Polish White-Back cows (65.7%) and Polish Red cows (64.7%) was remarkably higher than that of the Black-and-White cows (39.9%).

SummaryThe aim of this study was to characterise the Polish Red cattle breed, the only existing native breed in Poland. The origin and conformation of this breed and its historical development, distribution and performance were described. Moreover, the attention was paid to the attempts to improve the breed milk performance by crossbreeding with Jersey, Danish Red and Angler and beef performance by crossbreeding with Black-and-White, Red-and-White, Simmental and beef bulls. Before the Second World War the Polish Red held the rank of an international breed, and since the middle of the previous century had been found almost throughout Poland. In the 1950s it still constituted 22% of the whole cattle population in Poland. Indeed in 1954 the Polish Red cattle population amounted to over 1.5 million head. Currently, Polish Red cattle are in danger of extinction. Only 300 cows are included in the Program of Genetic Resources Conservation and scarcely several hundred embryos and semen doses are stored in the Semen Bank of the National Research Institute of Animal Production in Balice. In 2001 the number of recorded Polish Red milking cows was 1 201. Their average performance amounted to 3 786 kg of milk with 4.26% of fat and 3.39% of protein. However, milk yield of the cows at the best farms exceeded 5 500 kg.

Abstract. Group of secondary traits such as health, longevity, type and milkability represents some of very important factors for successful milk production. These traits have been given great importance in recent years. In order to realize productive life of dairy cows as long and successful as possible, special attention should be directed to traits of type and body constitution. Objective of the research was to establish heritability coefficients for 14 type traits of first calving Black and White cows, effect of genetic and paragenetic factors (bull sires, farm, year and season of calving, age at scoring and share of Holstein-Friesian [HF] genes) on type traits, so that these scores could be included in calculation of breeding value of the animal. Also, average values of milk traits have been established: milk yield and yield of 4 % fat corrected milk (FCM), content and quantity of milk fat. Evaluation was performed on a sample of 2 976 first calving Black and White cows. Evaluated cows were reared on 7 farms of the Agricultural Corporation Belgrade in Serbia. Analysis of discontinuous and continuous influences was done using the method of least squares. Investigation indicated that the value of linear type evaluation should be included in the total evaluation of the breeding value and in this way complete insight into genetic supremacy, especially of breeding bulls, would be obtained. Use of bull semen of proven supremacy in transmission of genes desirable from the aspect of body constitution, in the process of artificial insemination, would lead faster to production herds with animals which are uniform in type, of good conformation and longevity, which is of special significance in conditions of intensive rearing of dairy cattle.

The assessment according to the quality of offspring from the seed bulls of the prospective lines belonging to black-and-white and Holstein cattle breeds was carried out on the pedigree stock of the black-and-white breed using the method of daughter-herdmate allowing to determine which breeding animals are the best for planned settlement in the herd. Research results show that the seed bulls used can be conditionally divided into 3 groups: with high breeding value (BV) in terms of milk yield (Nabat 209, Kadr 1386, belonging to Annas Adema 30587 line) and mJ (Fantik 1550, Valun 1771 — Annas Adema 30587 line; Doris 1060 — R. Sovering 198998 line, and Cornet 251 — Vis Back Ideal 1013415 line); with average (Fagot 58, Bankir 109, Cornet 251, Mixer 312, and Jest 1401 — Vis Back Ideal 1013415 line; Devik 6200 — R. Sovering 198998 line; Dozhd 1839, Zenit 5209 — Poseidon 239 line) and insignificant BV (Bankir 109, Valun 1771, and Cascad 1596 - Vis Back Ideal 1013415, Annas Adema 305874, and Tantalus 203 lines, accordingly). The most significant in breeding terms, both in milk yield and fat, are seed bulls of the black-and-white breed belonging to Annas Adema 30587 and Poseidon 239 lines with the BV of 271.56 and 274.16 kg, 0.02 and 0.05%, accordingly. Using seed bulls with high breeding value ensuring realization of genetic potential seen in their offspring by purposeful selection and breeding work with the herd is preferable for increasing the productive qualities of cattle belonging to black-and-white breed.
