As microalgal blooms are very common and making serious problems in water bodies throughout Bangladesh, an investigation was carried out to see the composition and succession of noxious blue-green algae in pangasiid catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) ponds. During the course of the study, 20 species of Cyanophyceae were recorded, and among them Microcystis aeruginosa was the most abundant compared to other species. Significant occurrence of Microcystis viridis was also observed. Efforts were made to study certain physico-chemical factors and their influence on the composition and seasonal abundance of these species. Peak abundance of M. aeruginosa was observed from July to August. Moderately higher water temperature, lower rainfall and NO3-PO4 enrichment increased the biomass of both M. aeruginosa (168.72×103cells/L) and M. viridis (8×103cells/L) in the experimental ponds. Higher feeding rate in monoculture of pangasiid catfish (P. hypophthalmus) made the ponds hyper nutrified by unutilized feed and fish excreta that supported the higher abundance of these Cyanophyceae. In composite culture ponds, silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) effectively grazed down the microalgae and as a result, algal bloom was not noticed.

The present study was conducted to know the culture strategies and fish health and disease problems in pond aquaculture in Mymensingh, Bogra and Pabna districts of Bangladesh. Questionnaire interview and participatory rural appraisal tools like focus group discussion (FGD) were conducted with selected fish farmers. In total 90 farmers were interviewed and 9 FGD sessions were conducted. Most of the respondents practiced carp and pangas polyculture and they had disease problems in their ponds. Prevalence of fish disease varied with cultured species and locations. The most prevalent diseases as reported by the farmers were pop eye (57.78%), ventral reddening (55.55%), tail and fin rot (48.89), hemorrhagic lesion over the body surface (45.56%), dropsy (40%), gill rot (40%), white spot (40%) and epizootic ulcerative syndrome or EUS (33.33%). According to farmers opinion most susceptible species to disease was silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (57.78%); followed by mrigal, Cirrhinus cirrhosus (50%); catla, Catla catla (47.78%); sarputi, Barbodes gonionotus (47.78%); rui, Labio rohita (42.22%) and pangas, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus (42.22%). Higher mortality was found in pangas (53.56%). Clinically, pangas, koi and sarputi were found severely affected. Most of the farmers used some treatment measures against disease problems. This study also highlited some fish health management problems in pond aquaculture. The experiment was operated in 9 consecutive weeks in nine earthen nursery ponds having the same area (0.09 acre) and depth (0.8 m). Seven days old fries of Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) were stocked at 4000, 5000 and 6000 fries/decimal in three treatments with three replications as T-1, T-2 and T-3, respectively to observe the growth and survival. At stocking, hatchlings were the same batch-rearing with an average length and weight of 0.44 ± 0.05 cm and 0.14 ± 0.05 mg, respectively. Wet mustered oil cake and commercial nursery feed containing 30% crude protein were given by two weeks interval, initially according to the bodyweight; the feeding rate was 14% in the first two weeks, gradually reduced to 12, 10 and 8%, respectively in the following week intervals. Water quality parameters and plankton sufficiency were observed every 15 days interval and was found within the acceptable range. Growth performance (6.458 g), survival rate of fingerlings (85.76%) and total production (22151g/decimal) were found highest in T-1 followed by T-2 and T-3. The study concluded that expect better production of fry up to fingerlings, proper stocking density should be maintained in pond fish culture in Jashore region of Bangladesh.

The present study was carried out on the seasonal abundance and diversity of zooplankton in a semi- intensive shrimp farm of Bagerhat district from June to December, 2008. Plankton samples were collected by conical shaped monofilament nylon net (Plankton net) and Lugol’s solution was used for preservation. The zooplankton abundance was influenced by physico-chemical factors. In the present study 5 groups of zooplankton were observed namely rotifer, copepod, cladocera, ostracoda and crustacean larvae. Among the various groups of zooplankton, the percentages of copepod, rotifer, cladocera, ostracoda and crustacean larvae in the culture system were 52%, 39%, 7%, 1% and 1% respectively. The zooplankton was dominated by copepods (52%) which showed more or less two peaks in August (833 individuals/L) and in October (815 individuals/L). Rotifer and copepod were about r awhile one genus Cypris of ostracod was found only in August. Three genus of copepod namely Diaptomus,  Cyclops and Mesocyclops were identified in the study area of which Diaptomus and Mesocyclops were more or less dominant while four genus of which Brachionus and Filinia under rotifer and Daphnia and Diaphanosoma under cladocera were also found during the study period. An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of feeding schedule on growth, production and economics of pangasiid catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) polyculture in nine earthen ponds for a period of 135 days. There were three treatments (T) each with three replications. Species composition (1:1) and stocking density (25,000 fish/ha) were same in all treatments. A commercially available pelleted feed was given only for pangasiid catfish with same feeding rate in all treatments but the feeding frequency was different. The feeding rate was 10%, 8%, 7%, 6 %, 5%, 4% which was consecutively adjusted after each fortnightly sampling and 3% for the last 4 weeks of the study period. Feeding frequencies was once a day in T1, two times a day in T2 and three times a day in T3. The average weight gain of pangasiid catfish and silver carp in T3 (376.69 g and 81.02 g) was significantly higher (P<0.05) than those of T2 (330.25 g and 58.35 g) and T1 (261.76 g and 42.89 g). The survival rate was 95.2, 96.0 and 96.8% for pangasiid catfish and 83.2, 85.2 and 86.0% for silver carp in T1, T2 and T3, respectively. The net production of fish in T3 (5,430.64 kg/ha) was significantly higher (P<0.05) than those of T2 (4,584.70 kg/ha) and T1 (3,562.89 kg/ha). Significantly highest net return (Tk. 68,533.54/ha with benefit cost ratio of 1.36) was achieved from T3 followed by T2 (Tk. 40,080.56/ha with benefit cost ratio of 1.22) and T1 (Tk. 13,786.67/ha with benefit cost ratio of 1.08). The present research findings suggest that an increase of feeding frequency has positive effect on growth and production of pangasiid catfish and silver carp. Effect of duckweed supplementation as fish feed to polyculture system was investigated. Fish were reared for 90 days with or without duckweed supplementation. The ponds were fertilized with cowdung, urea and triple super phosphate. All the important physico-chemical factors including temperature, transparency, dissolved oxygen, total alkalinity, phosphate-phosphorus and nitrate-nitrogen were within productive ranges for fish culture. Ponds were stocked with silver carp, Thai sharputui, tilapia, common carp and mrigel. After a 90 days rearing period, net fish production was found to be significantly higher in fish fed duckweed at a rate of 20% of body weight compared to fish without duckweed supplement. It was concluded that duckweed can effectively be used as feed for polyculture of fish. Key words: Duckweed; polyculture; feed. Anopheles breeding in relation to aquatic vegetation and certain physico-chemical parameters was studied in rice fields of Purnia district. Association of larvae with different types of aquatic vegetation in different proportions was observed. Maximum Anopheles larvae were found associated with green and blue green algae. It indicates that algae encountered mosquito breeding by providing food and shelter followed by Ipomea, Hydrilla and water hyacinth. Among physico-chemical parameters pH, temperature, turbidity, electrical conductivity, DO, nitrate, carbonate and phosphate showed positive correlation while chloride and bicarbonate showed negative correlation. It can be concluded that aquatic vegetation usually growing in rice fields influences Anopheles breeding and their abundance varies with the occurrence and intensity of each aquatic plant. Physico-chemical factors also exert impact on larval survival and emergence. Thus, such factors should be considered when designing an integrated vector control program. However, a detailed study on the role of other interrelated factors such as predator-parasitie relationship, cultivation practices, emergence rate etc is needed for full understanding of the subject. Although the specific soil type was not analyzed in this survey, other reports indicated that there is variation in development of Anopheles larva among the different soil types

The influence of a biologically inert protective coating on the basis of low-esterified pectin substances (LEPS) on the qualitative indicators of frozen fish and its lipids is studied in this paper: organoleptic, physico-chemical, structural-mechanical and biochemical changes in fish of various methods of freezing during 240 days of cold storage. The limiting periods of storage of a silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) of different ways of freezing are established. The prolongation of the shelf life of refrigeration and the higher quality indices of frozen fish with the use of a protective coating based on low-esterified pectin substances is due to the reduction of shrinkage and inhibition of hydrolytic decomposition and oxidative damage of lipids by preventing the contact of the surface of frozen fish with oxygen in the air. In addition, when freezing fish in a calcium chloride solution, the LEPS-based coatings exhibit barrier properties, preventing the diffusion of calcium ions into the muscle tissue of the product. Such a mechanism of influence on the duration of fish storage of various methods of freezing during prolonged cold storage allows to obtain frozen fish with high quality indices and to substantially reduce losses during refrigerated storage.
