Both static and dynamic characteristics of light reflected from a specially designed multilayer metal-dielectric structure with Kerr nonlinearity have been studied in this work. Various regimes of nonlinear reflection from the structure have been demonstrated, including bistable switching between low and high reflection states, which occurs at low intensity of the incident light due to a significant enhancement in the optical field in the nonlinear layer under conditions of total internal reflection. This nonlinear structure has been proposed to use as an optically controlled intracavity laser modulator.

In the present frame of work, optical bistability using a Fabry–Perot (FP) cavity containing 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-p-dimethylaminostyryl-4H-pyran (DCM) dye entrapped in poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) matrix is experimentally investigated. Optical nonlinear behavior of solid-state samples is studied using a single-mode Q-switched nanosecond Nd:YAG laser operating at 532 nm. Various optical nonlinear parameters such as nonlinear refractive index (n2) and third-order susceptibility (χ3) of the material are numerically estimated from bistability loops. The origin of optically bistable behavior is attributed to photoisomerization-assisted nonlinear refraction phenomenon. It is observed that nonlinear refraction dominates over nonlinear absorption in giving rise to the optical bistability. The study shows that DCM dye entrapped in solid-state matrices are promising candidate for polymer-based optical switches, data processing, and communication systems.

We study optical bistability (OB) in a controllable giant self-Kerr nonlinear atomic gaseous medium placed in a unidirectional ring cavity. The medium is coherently excited by strong controlling field and a weak probe laser field under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Doppler broadening. In a weak field limit of the probe light, an analytic OB equation for the probe light field is derived as an analytic function of parameters of the controlling field and temperature of the medium. It is shown that OB characters can be manipulated with the parameters due to the controllable properties of the self-Kerr nonlinearity. Furthermore, enhancement of the Kerr nonlinearity reduces the switching intensity threshold and width of the OB.

In this paper, the optical bistability in finite size one-dimensional coupled resonator nonlinear optical waveguide has been investigated. To calculate the bistable switching manner in five proposed structures, we use the linear and nonlinear transfer matrices with fixed point iteration method. Our results show that the threshold and domain of bistable switching answer depend on the defect region in one-dimensional coupled resonator nonlinear optical waveguides. Also, the best answer of switch takes place at the left and right edges of the photonic band gap of the structures depending on the defect regions. In fact, due to the presence of the photonic band gap in the slow wave system, the density of states of the electromagnetic fields is large at the photonic band edge and photonic defect modes and thus the group velocity is small, and the local field is enhanced. All these factors contribute to a significant decrease in the threshold of optical bistable switching devices.

We present a new approach based on the recently reported finite element scheme16 to study the optical response of a finite one-dimensional nonlinear grating. Using the transmitted wave amplitude as a numerical input parameter, we are able to find all stable and unstable solutions related to a specific incident wave which build up the complete bistability curve. The method is applied to investigate the optical bistability in a nonlinear quarter-wave reflector with a defect. With a proper choice of the incident light frequency, a very low bistability threshold is predicted for an optimized defect structure.

In this work, we investigate subluminal and superluminal light propagation in a vee-type three-level atomic medium under an external magnetic field. The dispersion and absorption behaviors are studied for the cases of absence and presence of a magnetic field. It is found that under an electromagnetically induced transparency condition, the light pulse can be switched between subluminal and superluminal propagation by ON-OFF switching of the magnetic field. Finally, the transient response of the medium is discussed, which shows that the considered scheme has potential applications in magneto-optic switching devices. The optical bistability, tristability and multistability are explored in arrays of graphene. The arrays are periodically arranged spatially by single sheets of graphene. Optical bistability could be achieved with a strong enough incident intensity of light wave. The thresholds of optical bistability and the intervals between the upper and lower thresholds change with the surface conductivity of graphene and the incident wavelength. By increasing the intensity of incident light, tristability and multistability can be induced as well. Furthermore, the thresholds of bistability, tristability and multistability can be regulated via the chemical potential of graphene. This study may have potential applications in optical logic gates, all-optical switches and photomemory.

Experimental predictions have been made for two-state bistable switching in both metal- GaAs native oxide-semiconductor-metal (MISM) and metal- GaAs native oxide-semiconductor- GaAs native oxide-metal (MISIM) structures for the first time, where the GaAs native oxides are formed by the liquid phase oxidation method. Bidirectional two-state switching (DIAC-like) and three-terminal operation are also shown in the photo-sensitive MISIM structure. Typical switching voltages for GaAs MISM and MISIM switches under 4 nm-thick native oxides are 7 V and 15 V, respectively. The corresponding voltage control efficiencies for MISM and MISIM switches are also as high as 3.944 and 7.04. The corresponding variation in voltage control efficiency, Δη=ΔVS/VH, is also as high as 2.5 at 150 nW incident light power.

AbstractWe analyse the combined effect of the radiation-pressure and cross-Kerr nonlinearity on the stationary solution of the dynamics of a nanomechanical resonator interacting with an electromagnetic cavity. Within this setup,we show how the optical bistability picture induced by the radiation-pressure force is modi fied by the presence of the cross-Kerr interaction term. More specifically, we show how the optically bistable region, characterising the pure radiation-pressure case, is reduced by the presence of a cross-Kerr coupling term. At the same time, the upper unstable branch is extended by the presence of a moderate cross-Kerr term, while it is reduced for larger values of the cross-Kerr coupling.
