The goal was to substantiate the concept of intangible nature use and review the methodological approaches to quantitative assessment of intangible natural resources. We reviewed a state-of-the-art body of knowledge in environmental protection and transformation of economic policy responding to the sustainable development goals. In this paper, we generalised a large research direction regarding relational values of nature – intangible nature use. This research direction has been increasingly recognised within the natural resources frameworks, as evident from the experience of intergovernmental (IPBES) and national initiatives, and a recent shift of global GDP’s structure towards intangible components. Such a research direction is fruitful in the context of reprioritisation of values of nature of industrial era towards informational industries to resolve the contradictions between the potentially endless economic growth (based on instrumental values of nature) and nature protection activities. For the first time, we demonstrate how the international academic community (using diverse terminology and methodological frameworks, and often indirectly), gradually constitutes a new research domain on intangible nature use. We also highlight the prospects for decision-making and implementation of sustainable development practises in Ukraine.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), are high on the agenda for most countries of the world. In its publication of the SDGs, the UN has provided the goals and target descriptions that, if implemented at a country level, would lead towards a sustainable future. The IAEG (InterAgency Expert Group of the SDGs) was tasked with disseminating indicators and methods to countries that can be used to gather data describing the global progress towards sustainability. However, 2030 Agenda leaves it to countries to adopt the targets with each government setting its own national targets guided by the global level of ambition but taking into account national circumstances. At present, guidance on how to go about this is scant but it is clear that the responsibility is with countries to implement and that it is actions at a country level that will determine the success of the SDGs. Reporting on SDGs by country takes on two forms: i) global reporting using prescribed indicator methods and data; ii) National Voluntary Reviews where a country reports on its own progress in more detail but is also able to present data that are more appropriate for the country. For the latter, countries need to be able to adapt the global indicators to fit national priorities and context, thus the global description of an indicator could be reduced to describe only what is relevant to the country. Countries may also, for the National Voluntary Review, use indicators that are unique to the country but nevertheless contribute to measurement of progress towards the global SDG target. Importantly, for those indicators that relate to the security of natural resources security (e.g., water) indicators, there are no prescribed numerical targets/standards or benchmarks. Rather countries will need to set their own benchmarks or standards against which performance can be evaluated. This paper presents a procedure that would enable a country to describe national targets with associated benchmarks that are appropriate for the country. The procedure builds on precedent set in other countries but in particular on a procedure developed for the setting of Resource Quality Objectives in South Africa. The procedure focusses on those SDG targets that are natural resource-security focused, for example, extent of water-related ecosystems (6.6), desertification (15.3) and so forth, because the selection of indicator methods and benchmarks is based on the location of natural resources, their use and present state and how they fit into national strategies.

The Swedish Global Health Research Conference held in Stockholm, 18–19 April 2018, convened researchers from across Sweden’s universities to foster collaboration and new research. In response to the theme of the conference, How can Sweden contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals? From research to action, many of the plenary and keynote speakers highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary research and teaching. This commentary draws upon a workshop discussing interdisciplinarity, which took place at the conference. Participants included senior professors, lecturers, students and collaborators from the private sector and civil society and we discussed the conceptual and structural challenges that prevent engagement in interdisciplinary research. Although the workshop focused on the Swedish context, issues will be familiar to researchers working outside of Sweden. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals highlight the grand challenges for global society and are intertwined, with progress in one affecting progress in all others. With this starting point, we argue that interdisciplinary research is the way to achieve them. Accordingly, we need to overcome the conceptual and structural challenges that can hinder it. We therefore argue for a paradigm shift of how we value knowledge. We also call for fundamental changes in external and internal (university-level) funding structures, and for the strengthening of interdisciplinary global health teaching.

The purpose of the article is to present the activities carried out by the Warsaw School of Economics, including the Department of Economics and Finance of the Local Government, aimed at both activities aimed at the diversified development of the broader sense - the activities of the Universities in this respect and in the strict sense, i.e. the activities of one of the departments, i.e. the Department of Economics and Finance of the Local Government within research and development at the local government level. The activities in the area of sustainable development include the membership to the Sustainable Development Goals Accord, the seat of the Polish branch of OIKOS International . On the other hand, activities in the field of sustainable development strictly mean activities in the field of research and development as well as conducting lectures and postgraduate studies in the field of sustainable development in the broad sense of the word. These activities are carried out by the mentioned department. The activities are therefore implemented on a large scale in order to increase the promotion of the idea of sustainable development in order to support the idea of sustainable development at every possible level, from national to local.

This article highlights the potential for increased and more standardised monitoring of a range of aspects of the safety of journalists. This is in the light of a specific indicator that has been agreed by the UN as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The indicator concerned treats the safety of journalists as a benchmark for tracking progress on SDG target 16.10, which specifies “public access to information and fundamental freedoms” (UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, n.d.) as a development aspiration. Inclusion of this indicator in the SDGs provides a universally legitimated framework with strong catalytic potential. All this holds a promise of improved, more comparative, and increased research output, as compared to the previous situation. The results of new research stimulated by this development, particularly at country level, could have real impact on the safety of journalists.

In the face of the fast depletion of natural resources worldwide resulting from industrial and economic cannibalism, selfishness and marginalization are becoming more and more pronounced in a globalizing world. The phenomena of selfishness and marginalization are manifest in the introduction of stringent immigration laws by most industrialized countries in the North to ward off migrants from the less developed economies in the South; and also the reinforcement of existing laws by the latter to protect their citizens and natural resources in recent years. Issues of national identity, territorial integrity as against the centrality of humanity remain an Achilles heel toward the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As far as 1968, Ahmadou Kourouma, an Ivorian novelist, in his very first narrative text, “Les Soleils des Indépendances” later translated into English as The Suns of Independence, raised the tragic dilemma of national identity at the expense of ‘human identity’. In the absence of concrete steps to address the issues over the years, Liberia, Sierra Leone and La Côte d’Ivoire were engulfed in intestine civil strife over two decades later. The main causes of this strife are found in the irrational quest for self-identity in the name of nationality and ethnic superiority for greater access and control of “national” resources. This paper examines the upsurge of socioeconomic and political exclusion, and the potential threats they pose to the realization of the recently launched Sustainable Development Goals. It is done through a critical reading of Kourouma’s The Suns of Independence, Allah is not obliged and ‘Quand on refuse, on dit non’. The study is posited within the analytical framework of literary studies and sociocriticism

Seventeen sustainable development goals (SDGs) were put forward at the United Nations Development Summit in 2015 when releasing “Transforming our world: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. However, the international community still lacks understanding of how to make a bridge between scientific research and SDGs. China has experienced 40 years of rapid economic growth and social development, which have imposed considerable challenges on sustainable development. Although many disciplines have made contributions to promoting sustainable development in China, how to bridge SDGs and scientific research is still not fully clear. In this paper, we review the contribution of geographers to this issue to provide references for further international efforts towards meeting the SDGs. We consider three aspects in particular: the sensitive process capture of regional responses and feedbacks to global change; the cognition and geographical solution of human–environment conflicts; and the mutual promotion of spatial governance and geographical practices. The contribution of geography as a discipline to the sustainable development of China is an epitome of geographers’ efforts over the world. The practices experienced in China show that geography has played an irreplaceable role in promoting sustainable development, and can deal effectively with the challenges posed to the academic community by SDGs. As a discipline, geography has been deeply integrated into sustainable development. In the future, geography should become a key discipline in integrating many disciplines involved in sustainable development studies, and provide real-time decision support systems for sustainable development by combining big data and artificial intelligence.

In the 21st century, many global challenges such as the instability of economic development, social inequality of the population, climate change have escalated and posed a significant threat to the achievement of sustainable development goals. As is known, until recently, in many countries of the world, the model of accelerated build-up of productive forces was dominated by the extensive use of natural resources, which causes great damage to the environment. Thus, the implemented model of increasing production essentially provided "growth without development." Such a development model is typical for many developing countries, including the countries of the post-Soviet space, including Uzbekistan. Therefore, the world community has come to the conclusion that it is necessary to search for ways of economic growth that do not increase the burden on natural resources and move to a new model of sustainable development. Uzbekistan is currently receiving close attention from the international community and the country is striving to ensure the sustainability of development not only through the use of rich natural resources, but also through the transition to innovative development based on the principles of the "green economy". Only on this basis is it possible to achieve the goals of sustainable development in Uzbekistan.

The article is devoted to the study of the role of entrepreneurship as an important component of the national economy in the establishment of the internationally recognized Sustainable Development Goals in Ukrainian society. Entrepreneurship has been established to promote the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals primarily through participation in solving humanistic oriented social problems related to human rights security, nature protection, resource conservation and rational reproduction, overcoming global challenges, etc. New opportunities have been opened for expansion of directions of functioning of the enterprise on all chains of activity on maintenance of sustainable development. An illustration of the positive society's perception of such humanistic oriented entrepreneurship are certain preferences of the state for business that works in the prism of the Sustainable Development Goals. Stages and mechanism of implementation of Sustainable Development Goals in entrepreneurship are determined. The main directions of ensuring the development of entrepreneurship aimed at implementing the Sustainable Development Goals are considered. Entrepreneurship can provide a positive impact on the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals by: addressing important issues of resource conservation and revitalization (using an inclusive approach, generating innovative ideas, technologies), using new opportunities in the development of person’s own business; introduction of principles of sustainability and respect for the person, environment and a law and order in the corporate behavior and practice of activity of the enterprise; active participation in the creation or modernization of person’s own activity in accordance with the objectives of achieving Sustainable Development Goals, especially the formation of infrastructure, various platforms, partnerships for sustainable development, etc. Usually these areas require from entrepreneurship some efforts, first of all, time and financial resources. Entrepreneurship shall also be supported by the state in order to intensify such humanization ideas. The idea of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals in business replaces the established practice with new approaches providing not only profit but also economic and social well-being.
