When Pediatric Patients Become Parents

In the past year a number of my adolescent patients have had children of their own. Many of these adolescents had been patients of mine for as many as 10 years prior to their becoming pregnant. My own transition in caring for their children has been surprisingly difficult. Working in a hospital-based primary care center, I have cared for many children of teenaged parents, but only recently have patients whom I have known for most of their childhood reached an age at which they are becoming parents. In subtle but certain ways, I have had more difficulty with teenaged parents with whom I have a long-term relationship than I have had with teenaged parents with whom I have had no prior experience.
