The influence of casting temperatures on microstructures and mechanical properties of rapidly solidified Cu50Zr45.5Ti2.5Y2 alloy was investigated. With increasing casting temperatures, the amount of the crystalline phase decreases. At a high casting temperature, i.e., 1723 K, glass-forming ability (GFA) of the present alloy is enhanced. The results imply that adjusting the casting temperature could be used for designing the microstructures of bulk metallic glass matrix composite. Nanoindentation tests indicated that CuZr phases are slightly softer and can accommodate more plastic deformation than the amorphous matrix. Compression tests confirmed that this kind of second phase (CuZr) precipitated under lower casting temperatures helps to initiate multiple shear bands, resulting in a great improvement in mechanical properties of the samples. Our work indicates that casting temperatures have a great influence on GFA, microstructures, and mechanical properties of the rapidly solidified alloy, therefore controlling the casting temperature is crucial to the production of BMGs.

B4C-TiB2 composite was prepared using hot pressure sintering. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the B4C-TiB2 composite were investigated. The B4C-TiB2 composite with 43 mass % TiB2 showed the optimized properties. The relative density, hardness, flexural strength and fracture toughness of that were 98.2 %, 25.9 GPa, 458 MPa and 8.7 MPa•m1/2, respectively. A number of toughening mechanisms, including fine grain, crack deflection and grain pull-out, were observed during microstructural analysis of the composite. The fracture mode of the B4C-TiB2 composite was greatly affected by the existence of the second phase of TiB2.

AbstractIn this paper, the effects of extrusion–shear (ES) on the microstructures and mechanical properties of AZ31 magnesium alloy has been studied, which has been achieved by conducting a lot of experiments and tests, including ES process, direct extrusion with different billet temperatures, microstructure analysis, hardness test, tensile & compression tests. The results show that the ES-processed rods has higher strengths (yield strength and tensile strength) than the direct extrusion ones with the same billet temperature, which contributed to their lower averaged grain size obtained from microstructure analysis according to Hall–Petch relation. Besides, the hardness of ES-processed AZ31 magnesium alloy decreases with the increasing of billet temperature. By comparing the two processes, it can be seen that the ES process could refine the microstructure and improve the mechanical properties of magnesium alloy.

The mechanical properties of a new Zr-based bulk metallic glass at low temperatures were investigated. The results indicate that the fracture strength increases significantly (4.9%) and the global plasticity increases somewhat when testing temperature is lowered to 123K. The stress-strain curve of the sample deformed exhibits more serrations and smaller stress drop due to formation of more shear bands at low temperature than at room temperature.

The influence of annealing on the structural changes and the mechanical properties of Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 (Vit-1) bulk metallic glass was systematically studied by varying the annealing times at 703 K. The evolution of the structural state at a relatively high temperature within the supercooled liquid region was studied by thermal analysis, x-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, extended x-ray absorption fine structure, and dilatometric measurements. The deformation behavior and the mechanical properties were also examined by carrying out hardness and compression tests for the specimens annealed for various times.
