In light of recent advances in the analysis of depth-sensing indentation data and of the importance of this technique in the study of the mechanical properties of thin films, a special discussion session was held in order to explore the state of the art and to provide an informal forum for discussion. This is a brief review of that discussion. The discussion was focused by the four main sources of deviation from model behavior described in the previous paper.

The history of lexicography in Iran dates back to more than 2,000 years ago, to the time of the compilation of bilingual and monolingual lexicons for the Middle Persian language. After a review of the long and rich tradition of Persian lexicography, the chapter gives an account of the state of the art in the modern era by describing recent advances and developments in this field. During the last three or four decades, in line with the advancements in western countries, Iranian lexicography evolved from its traditional state into a modern professional and academic activity trying to improve the form and content of dictionaries by implementing the following factors: the latest achievements in theoretical and applied linguistics related to lexicography; and the computer techniques and information technology and corpus-based approach to lexicography.

Abstract A review of the literature and the state-of-the-art in research and development of miniature heat exchangers is presented in this paper. The authors provide a discussion of what makes the micro- and meso-scales important, highlight the design constraints and challenges that surface when miniaturizing a heat exchanger, and outline and discuss the outstanding practical and scientific issues in this area. Finally, the most recent advances in manufacturing processes and application of these miniature heat exchangers are covered in this article.

Several masonry panels are studied by means of destructive tests such as compressive, diagonal compression and shear-compression tests. The experimental research allows to characterize the mechanical properties of masonry walls in order to assess the masonry performance. Moreover, a brief recall of the most important experimental progress is presented in order to understand the state of the art of the research in the field of destructive tests.

ABSTRACTSignificant improvement of mechanical properties was observed recently in graphene platelet-epoxy nanocomposites relative to unfilled epoxy, such as an increase of the fracture toughness by 50% and dramatic decrease of fatigue crack growth rate. In this work, thin films of 0.1 wt.% of graphene platelet (GPL) – epoxy nanocomposites were fabricated and the nanoscale mechanical properties of the nanocomposite were investigated by nanoindentation. This provides information about the presence of characteristic length scales induced by the microstructure and the strength of the filler-matrix interface.

The quantitative analysis of thin films containing light elements is very important in improving the coating processes and technological properties of the products. In order to review the state of the art of modern analytical techniques for such applications, the model systems SiOXNY and AlOXNY were selected. Over 1000 abstracts were screened, and the relevant literature was evaluated to give a comprehensive overview of instruments, analytical procedures and results, film types, deposition methods, and investigation goals. From more than 150 citations, the limitations, drawbacks, and pitfalls of the different methods were extracted and reviewed critically, while in addition, improvements were proposed where possible. These suggestions are combined with the newest results of investigation by the authors of this paper. Recommendations concerning the optimized combination of analytical methods for different analytical problems have been worked out on the basis of all results. Analysis of various multicomponent systems containing light elements demonstrated the applicability of the different methods of analysis in combination to all film systems with related compositions.
