ABSTRACTMetal nanoclusters (NCs) of lithium, zinc, silver and gold embedded in MgO were created by means of ion implantation of Li, Zn, Ag and Au ions into single crystals of MgO(100) and subsequent thermal annealing. Nanoclusters of the compound semiconductor CdSe were obtained by implantation of both Cd and Se ions. Solid noble gas clusters were formed by Kr ion implantation. Optical and structural properties of the NCs were investigated using optical absorption spectroscopy (OAS), high-resolution X-ray diffraction (XRD) and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM). The mean nanocluster size is estimated from the broadening of the Mie plasmon optical absorption bands using the Doyle formula. These results are compared with the NC size as obtained from XRD (using the Scherrer formula) and from direct XTEM observations. The three methods are found to be in reasonable agreement with a mean size of 4.0 and 10 nm found for the Au and Ag clusters, respectively. Using TEM observations, the relative interface energies of MgO//Au and MgO//Ag interfaces are also determined. In the case of MgO//Au, they are found not to be in agreement with theoretical predictions in the literature. CdSe nanoclusters were found to adopt different crystal structures dependent on the size. Small ones (<5 nm) appear to have a rock salt structure, larger ones the sphalerite structure. The solid krypton NC's are under high pressure. The pressure of individual Krypton bubbles was determined from the moiré fringes

High fluence low energy negative ion implantation has been used to synthesize embedded metal nanoclusters of Au , Ag and Sb in silica glass. The Au - and Ag -implanted samples showed peaks, corresponding to surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in the optical absorption (OA) spectra, confirming the formation of metallic nanoparticles in the matrix. No SPR peak was observed in case of Sb -implanted samples which is attributed to the absence of pure metallic precipitates which could be detected in the OA spectrum. Low frequency Raman scattering (LFRS) measurements also confirm this. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy has been used to infer about the size distribution of the nanoparticles. Sequential implantations of Au and Ag or Au and Sb have been found to result in SPR peaks at locations in between those for nanoparticles of the constituent atoms, indicating the formation of alloy nanoparticles in the system. In case of the Au + Ag system, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry has been used to infer about the composition of the nanoparticles in terms of the concentrations of the metallic constituents. A direct, one-to-one correspondence between the SPR peak position and composition has been observed.

Global measurements of total ozone are necessary to evaluate ozone hole recovery above Antarctica. The Environmental Trace Gases Monitoring Instrument (EMI) onboard GaoFen 5, launched in May 2018, was developed to measure and monitor the global total ozone column (TOC) and distributions of other trace gases. In this study, some of the first global TOC results of the EMI using the differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) method and validation with ground-based TOC measurements and data derived from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) observations are presented. Results show that monthly average EMI TOC data had a similar spatial distribution and a high correlation coefficient (R ≥ 0.99) with both OMI and TROPOMI TOC. Comparisons with ground-based measurements from the World Ozone and Ultraviolet Radiation Data Centre also revealed strong correlations (R > 0.9). Continuous zenith sky measurements from zenith scattered light differential optical absorption spectroscopy instruments in Antarctica were also used for validation (R = 0.9). The EMI-derived observations were able to account for the rapid change in TOC associated with the sudden stratospheric warming event in October 2019; monthly average TOC in October 2019 was 45% higher compared to October 2018. These results indicate that EMI TOC derived using the DOAS method is reliable and has the potential to be used for global TOC monitoring.

Optical absorption spectroscopy provides evidence for individually dispersed carbon nanotubes. A common method to disperse SWCNTs into aqueous solution is to sonicate the mixture in the presence of a double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). In this paper, optical characterization of dsDNA-wrapped HiPco carbon nanotubes (dsDNA-SWCNT) was carried out using near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) experiments. The findings suggest that SWCNT dispersion is very good in the environment of DNA existing. Additionally, its dispersion depends on dsDNA concentration.

Abstract. A new method for the satellite remote sensing of different types of vegetation and ocean colour is presented. In contrast to existing algorithms relying on the strong change of the reflectivity in the red and near infrared spectral region, our method analyses weak narrow-band (few nm) reflectance structures (i.e. "fingerprint" structures) of vegetation in the red spectral range. It is based on differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS), which is usually applied for the analysis of atmospheric trace gas absorptions. Since the spectra of atmospheric absorption and vegetation reflectance are simultaneously included in the analysis, the effects of atmospheric absorptions are automatically corrected (in contrast to other algorithms). The inclusion of the vegetation spectra also significantly improves the results of the trace gas retrieval. The global maps of the results illustrate the seasonal cycles of different vegetation types. In addition to the vegetation distribution on land, they also show patterns of biological activity in the oceans. Our results indicate that improved sets of vegetation spectra might lead to more accurate and more specific identification of vegetation type in the future.

The CdS nanoparticles of different sizes are synthesized by a simple chemical method. Here, CdS nanoparticles are grown through the reaction of solution of different concentration of CdCl2 with H2S. X-ray diffraction pattern confirms nano nature of CdS and has been used to determine the size of particle. Optical absorption spectroscopy is used to measure the energy band gap of these nanomaterials by using Tauc relation. Energy band gap ranging between 3.12 eV to 2.47 eV have been obtained for the samples containing the nanoparticles in the range of 2.3 to 6.0 nm size. A correlation between the band gap and size of the nanoparticles is also established.
