AbstractThe transition from new engineering graduate to successful member of corporate America is a difficult journey. Often the skills required are not part of a student's traditional undergraduate education. At Cal Poly, we have integrated a new course into our existing Senior Project curriculum which enables students to develop the professional skills necessary to become an effective member of any corporation. Key skills such as communication, problem solving and project management are practiced through active learning techniques. These as well as other topics studied are required for ABET certification.The new course investigates the mission and values that are at the foundation of any corporation's culture. It challenges students to evaluate their own personal leadership potential. Organization structures along with the roles and responsibilities of Engineering, Marketing, Sales, Operations, Finance and Executive management are studied along with the interdisciplinary nature of engineering and technology. The rigors and metrics of a typical product development methodology are explored along with the concepts of program management and the protection of intellectual property. Business models are studied which enable students to evaluate the impact engineering can have on a company's financial success. Moreover, the students learn that they are members of a global community with environmental and social responsibilities. The impact of technology on society can be profound and students are challenged to consider difficult ethical issues as well as exciting career opportunities.

The circular economy transition increasingly points to the need for a change in corporate culture, namely toward sustainability. This change can be supported by improving relations with relevant stakeholders, engaging comprehensively with them, and creating strong awareness about issues such as ecosystem protection, health-related safeguards, and the careful use of resources. In this regard, through stakeholder engagement and a review of traditional business models, the circular economy can contribute to transforming the corporate culture to ensure the concurrent enhancement of economic, social, and environmental dimensions. This study verified the role of stakeholder engagement in establishing and strengthening the sustainability culture in a company transitioning toward a circular economy. The case study research methodology was applied, referencing a single firm—operating in the oil and energy industry—representing one of the best practices in the international context, even if some efforts are still required to reduce downstream emissions. The findings underline the contributing role played by stakeholder engagement in establishing values and principles compliant with environmental protection and community wellbeing. Thus, this study contributes to the existing stakeholder engagement literature and sheds light on the practical implications and emerging issues.

The influence of social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter plays an increasingly influential role in the daily lives of people. Despite the rise of interest in this topic, the research discussing the ethical concerns of using social media for recruitment purposes remains in exploratory stages. This chapter provides a systematic review of recent research that was published from 2012 to 2018 and focused on ethical issues related to the use of social media for recruitment purposes. The techno-ethical lens, which studies the impact of technology on ethics, was used to explore the social and ethical aspects of how recruiters use social media for recruitment purposes.

The impact of technology on mental health practice is currently a concern in the counseling literature, and several articles have discussed using different types of technology in practice. In particular, many private practitioners use a cell phone for business. However, no article has discussed ethical concerns and best practices for the use of short message service (SMS), better known as text messaging (TM). Ethical issues that arise with TM relate to confidentiality, documentation, counselor competence, appropriateness of use, and misinterpretation. There are also such boundary issues to consider as multiple relationships, counselor availability, and billing. This article addresses ethical concerns for mental health counselors who use TM in private practice. It reviews the literature and discusses benefits, ethical concerns, and guidelines for office policies and personal best practices.

Rapid development and introduction of digital technologies has a significant impact on all areas of the economy. Everywhere causing a revision of existing paradigms, ways of interacting systems and aspects of business models. The author’s analysis of scientific publications shows that the recent financial crises are based on high risks of the traditional banking model, which are transferred to depositors and taxpayers. These processes have served as a driver for changes in the financial sector, changing existing concepts and paradigms towards the implementation of new digital approaches. The author, based on the analysis of the impact of technology on financial services, proposed the concept of Finance 4.0 implies a deep integration of digital technologies in the financial sector, which will lead to an increase in the quality and availability of services, as well as the formation of new rules that ensure healthy competition between market participants. As a result, the need for changes in both the economy as a whole and its branches is determined. This creates a need to develop current digital business models and methods for developing digital financial services. The purpose of the work is to offer a reasonable definition of Finance 4.0, as well as to identify the current requirements necessary for the implementation of the developed solutions within the financial environment. Which requires solving a number of research problems: 1. No definition of Finance 4.0. 2. Aspects of Finance 4.0 Are not defined. 3. It is Necessary to define the role of business models in the field of financial technologies. The relevance of the research is due to the fact that existing approaches to designing business models of financial services do not take into account the specifics of the idea of Finance 4.0 and the primacy of trust, which sometimes leads to the implementation of unprofitable solutions in the financial sector.

Technology advances, particularly in terms of information access and sharing, give rise to complex ethical issues that youth need to grapple with. Digital citizenship necessitates gleaning electronic information and participating actively and ethically in cyberspace to act wisely on that information for social and personal improvement. Today's youth tend to avoid traditional politics; instead, they get their information about the public sphere from social media and engage in lifestyle causes. This chapter explores the role of digital citizenship, civic engagement and the impact of technology on it, current issues in pro-active digital citizenship, conditions for teaching proactive digital citizenship, its curriculum and instruction, and the potential of citizen journalism as a mechanism for facilitating youth-centered proactive digital citizenship.

Purpose. Identifying the research gap in the area of tourism business models (MB) and formulating a research programme to analyse structural changes within the tourism market. Method. Review and synthesis of publications from the EBSCO, Emerald Insight, ProQuest, Science Direct and Web of Science databases, devoted to tourism MB in the years 2000-2018. Identification of common topics and identification of research gaps. Findings. The research topics most frequently undertaken were: 1) MB configurations in the areas of tourism and hotel industry, transport, brokerage services and e-commerce; 2) analysis of value types; 3) sustainability of the business model; 4) susceptibility to the impact of technology; (5) role of formal and legal environment. Research and conclusion limitations. The scope of analysis was limited to the mentioned databases and a review of scientific articles in English. Industry reports were omitted as not meeting the methodological requirements of scientific works, despite the fact that they illustrate the phenomenon of the emergence of new entities in tourism and the disappearance of the borders of markets, industries and entities. Practical implications. Operationalisation of the MB concept and the answer to the question, what is the real source of the crisis of the industries and entities of the tourist market, will lead to avoiding improper solutions. Despite statutory changes aimed at ensuring equal legal conditions for the functioning of tourism economy entities, differences resulting from different MB effectiveness and failure to recognise structural changes limiting the chances for development and flexible response to environmental conditions persist. Originality. In the article, it is indicated how scientists operationalise the MB concept and perceive the conditions for its modification. Together with the established directions of further research, this will allow to create a common conceptual basis and systematise knowledge resources useful in research on MB tourism market. Today’s business world is affected by the 21st century’s processes, like globalization, fluent online attendance, digitalization and their direct consequence depersonalisation. The authors are motivated by these facts and want to vivify the „old fashioned” correct business models and find the indispensable parameter of the well-functioning economy, in one word today’s equivalent of „honorable gentlemen”. The assumed key to success could be useful for the for-profit sector because not only profit can be the impelling in the professional life of a corporation. The human value added is one of the most important keystones of thrift. The aim to establish a balance between economic and ethical behaviour of corporations has been enounced serving the interest of all participants, consumers, corporations and society. The before natural thought values seem nowadays to turn into something different or to be neglected. As a consequence the question has been raised, if society has the force to establish and improve Ethics, will it be able to destroy it as well?! The main focus of the research is therefore the mapping of criteria and marks which belong to on the competitive market successful enterprises whose procurement decisions are ethical as well. These marks can be formal or informal. The results of the research show well that there are parameters of a company, for example, a code of conduct within guidelines concerning the procurement or procedure manuals in which also ethical issues appear in a formal way. From another point of view there are informal signs like customs arising from the corporate culture, daily routine or just human behaviour and convincement of the management and procurement employees that also support the ethical performance of the company. The results of the research can serve as best practice for the other enterprises too in their daily appearance on the market. Particularly in that area the company’s most important goal is “gaining profit” which can have next to itself another value added the “fair work”. Its role is to lead the attention to the statement that next to fair working on the market profit can be produced as well. The researchers consider it important that the companies who have already kept in mind the ethical procurement could gain a feedback, an inspiration or even new ideas to follow their work. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a recurrent and global concept used by international and local corporations, with its supporters, skeptics, and critics. It is also a growing area of concern and practice for businesses for answering the challenges of the present century, such as fighting poverty or promoting sustainable development goals. There is need—almost consensual—for clarifying the impact and the policy setting related to complex areas, such as climate change, environmental issues, social responsibility and a whole array of ethical issues, at global and at the local level (i.e., through an unavoidable glocal perspective). The purpose of this chapter is, first, to review the literature and the main issues related to corporate social responsibility; second, to identify the current challenges this scientific area is facing; and, third, to pinpoint its relevance at the level of the digital economy setting, for the management of the emergent business models and of the information systems management of businesses.
