This article elaborates the phenomenon of fundamentalism and the future of Islamic political ideology. Islamic ideology represents religious views, ideas and movements which aspire to bring Islam into practice in state and societal affairs. One variant of Islamic ideologies is fundamentalism which endeavors to return religious practices back to the pristine Islam based on the Qur’ân and al-Hadîth. Fundamentalism rejects all modes of understand-ding which are not based on the Qur’ân and al-Hadîth, and refuses secular methodology in interpreting the Qur’ân. This type of Islamic ideology found its momentum when Saudi Arabia regime officially adopted Wahhabism, and when Egyptian intellectuals were united to fight against modernity. Both Saudi Arabia and Egypt became seeding ground for fundamentalism. Some young muslim scholars who studied there became agents for the dissemination dan transmission of the fundamentalist ideology throughout the world. In Indonesia, this ideology have developed since independence and the drafting of the constitution. In the Indonesian context, resistence from traditionalist and nationalit groups were so strong that enable to dam up the spread of fundamentalis ideas. However, fundamentalist ideology remains an important challenge for the future of Indonesian Islam.

The momentum of the development of Sharia banking has been noticed since the 1970s, which generally had two patterns: first, establishing the Islamic bank side by side with conventional one (dual-banking system) as practiced in Egypt, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Bangladesh; and second, restructuring the banking system as a whole in accordance with Islamic Sharia (full-fledged Islamic financial system) as applied in Sudan, Iran and Pakistan. The development of the Sharia-based banks which have been established across the world since the 1970s, became the motivation of the Indonesian ulemas to draft law on Sharia banking, so that Sharia banking could also be developed. As a result, these last few years, the banking world in Indonesia has witnessed the establishment of the public Sharia banks and Sharia business units, like Bank Muamalat and Bank Syariah Mandiri to mention a few. Using historical and contemporary jurisprudence perspective, this paper provides discussion on the future of Sharia banking.

This paper attempts to shed some light on Islamic Nashid (Nasyid) groups in Malaysia, in particular Rabbani, Raihan and Hijjaz. With the emergence of globalization and its entertainment aspect, and due to the huge influence of modernization on the society especially among the youth, there was a need for an alternative entertainment. And, as far as Muslims are concerned, the most effective way in this regard was, to a great extent, Islamic Nashid. Entertainment itself has been an area of great discussion and dispute among Muslim scholars throughout the ages all over the world. In Malaysia, the issue of allowing or disallowing entertainment specifically songs and music is no longer a big issue. As a matter of fact, entertainment is part of the traditions and culture of the Muslims in this part of the world. Nevertheless, the major concern here is what kind of songs and music do Nashid groups present? Could Islamic Nashid be an alternative to the conventional or non-Islamic songs? Is it possible for Nashid performance to be viewed as an act of worship? To what extent Nashid groups are contributing in the Islamization of entertainment and enhancement of Islamic awareness in Malaysian society?? The focus of this research is: (1) The historical background of Rabbani, Raihan and Hijjaz Nashid groups (2) The role these groups have been playing in creating Islamic awareness; (3) The Islamization of songs and music as promoted by these three groups; (4) The challenges these Nashid groups are facing in terms of publication and audience attendance etc.; and (5) The future of Islamic Nashid in Malaysia. This research is expected to provide important findings that will enhance Islamic awareness among the society members. Besides, it is hoped that this paper will highlight the effectiveness of Islamic Nashid in Malaysia especially in this borderless globalized village. Keywords: Nasyid, Nashid, Islamic Entertainment, Creativity, virtues, Malaysia.

Virtually all countries around the world are facing the challenge of consistently meeting the rising demand for higher education. A few countries, such as Norway and Saudi Arabia, have decided and been able to devote enough public resources to meet the challenge of adequately funding growing demand. However, for most countries, the challenge remains how to do more, with fewer public resources, to maintain accessible higher education systems of high quality, in the future.

This chapter continues the book’s analysis of religious freedom in Muslim-majority states by looking at the third of three categories of regimes that are each defined by their political theology. This category is religiously repressive states. It defines the basic features of religiously repressive states, portraying them through the concept of Islamism, a form of political ideology. It identifies Saudi Arabia and Iran as the standard-bearers of this category and focuses on other countries in this category around the world, which total 21. This chapter makes the case for “Islamoskepticism,” though it also argues that this view does not explain everything about this type of regime.

The hyper-elite events, “Cityquest KAEC Forum,” are held yearly in Saudi Arabia. Cityquest takes lessons from development initiatives in the Gulf, combining them with others, to foster optimum strategies for creating a new genre of city. Hosted by the King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) – the first of Saudi Arabia’s four new cities – the event aims to be a new node in the circulation of urban strategies, supplanting what now appear to be almost antique forms of urban conferencing. Experiencing an over-the-top luxury environment, the author was among the technologists, planners, architects, CEOs and visionaries, exchanging views on how to master plan new cities in the world. Projects like King Abdullah Economic City have become leaders in shaping visions of world urbanism, inspiring with a mantle of utopian boldness, albeit questionable in social and ecological consequence.

The city streets and spaces have for the duration of the city’s existence provided an area where people may trade and enjoy food. In the twentieth and twenty-first millennium, this activity is changing in form and conception. The food-truck industry is growing throughout the world and in particular in North America. This paper reviews the growth, its origins, its existing situation and prospect. Through a literature review of existing regulations governing the food-truck industry a compilation of these regulations will be made. After a description of the food-truck industry status in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia a comparison of the previously compiled regulations to the regulations that exist in Jeddah will be made. These comparisons have highlighted some issues with the regulations that exist in Jeddah. Main finding is the relatively insufficient regulations in place to govern the industry in the city, which may hinder the growth and prosperity of the industry and all those involved. Thus one of the main aims of the paper is to provide a basis upon which future regulations for the city of Jeddah may be created. Further discussions on the future of the food-truck industry in the city of Jeddah and beyond are put forth in the concluding section.

Abstract. This research took place just after the end of the protests following the killing of a 16-year-old boy by a policeman in Greece in December 2008. Participants (N = 224) were 16-year-olds in different schools in Attiki. Informed by the Politicized Collective Identity Model ( Simon & Klandermans, 2001 ), a questionnaire measuring grievances, adversarial attributions, emotions, vulnerability, identifications with students and activists, and questions about justice and Greek society in the future, as well as about youngsters’ participation in different actions, was completed. Four profiles of the participants emerged from a cluster analysis using representations of the conflict, emotions, and identifications with activists and students. These profiles differed on beliefs about the future of Greece, participants’ economic vulnerability, and forms of participation. Importantly, the clusters corresponded to students from schools of different socioeconomic areas. The results indicate that the way young people interpret the events and the context, their levels of identification, and the way they represent society are important factors of their political socialization that impacts on their forms of participation. Political socialization seems to be related to youngsters’ position in society which probably constitutes an important anchoring point of their interpretation of the world.

With signs of normalization seemingly in place in the world economy, a number of problems show the possibility of aggravation in the future. The volume of derivatives in American banks grows significantly, high risk instruments are back in place and their use becomes more active, global imbalances increase. All of the above requires thorough approaches when creating mechanisms which can neutralize external shocks for the Russian economy and make it possible to develop in the new post-crisis environment.
