ABSTRACT Objective: Recognize the domains of health promotion core competencies in the training process of adolescents carried out by nursing students. Method: Qualitative and descriptive study, which used the theoretical methodological contribution Developing Competencies and Professional Standards for Health Promotion Capacity Building in Europe (CompHP), carried out with 14 nursing students. Results: There were four domains: Enable Change; Mediate through Partnership; Communication; and Leadership. These domains came from the interest and commitment of adolescents in intersectoral partnership, the use of communication techniques, and the role of facilitator to catalyze learning and empowerment. Conclusion: There were some domains of core competency in the training of adolescents, suggesting that nursing students act as health promoters. Challenges for Nursing are the implementation of a theoretical contribution of CompHP in undergraduate and ongoing training to carry out health promotion action.

Purpose The purpose of this research is to explore the career development and workplace learning of Finnish multiple jobholders who are university graduates. Design/methodology/approach 45 in-depth interviews were conducted with graduate multiple jobholders in Finland. The transcripts were analyzed by abductive content analysis using the Chaos Theory of Careers. Research participants were recruited via social media, invitations, snowball sampling and through networks. Findings Meaningful work was the attractor, the central factor in the decision to be a multiple jobholder. Interviewees attempted to adjust to future changes through their learning and choice of jobs and reported on their role as creators of future working life. Interviewees regarded organizing of their work and timetable as a core competency with their identity closely linked to their competencies and networks. Research limitations/implications The author acknowledges that the national context of Finland is unusually favorable to those becoming multiple job holders. Practical implications The identification of meaningful work as the key attractor, the intention to adapt to future contexts and the specifying of organization of work and timetabling as core competencies in multiple jobholding have clear practical implications at the national, local, organizational and individual levels. Originality/value Little has previously been known of the role of multiple jobholding as a facilitator in skill development and limited knowledge of how the various jobs combine into one portfolio. Previous studies have focused on individuals who take a second job to earn more money. Elite multiple jobholding has attracted little research attention yet seems to have an important role in achieving changes in society.

The objective of this study was to identify vulnerability to tuberculosis (TB) related to knowledge about the disease among 76 nursing students and professionals. A quantitative descriptive study was conducted using a closed questionnaire for the collection of data regarding transmission, preventive and biosafety measures, diagnosis, and prejudice regarding the disease. The SAS software version 9.1.3 was used for data analysis, with the level of significance set at 5% (p < 0.05). Nursing students and professionals showed a vulnerability to TB related to knowledge about transmission, preventive and biosafety measures, and diagnosis of the disease. With respect to transmission, vulnerability was higher among nursing professionals. The results indicate the need for investment by healthcare institutions surrounding this topic in view of the important role of nursing in the establishment of strategies for prevention and control of the disease.

AbstractSelf-efficacy is one of the most ubiquitous term found in social, psychological, counselling, education, clinical and health literatures. The purpose of this chapter is to describe and evaluate self-efficacy theory and the studies most relevant to the nursing context. This chapter provides an overview of the development of self-efficacy theory, its five components and the role of self-efficacy in promoting emotional and behavioural changes in a person’s life with health problems. This chapter also discusses the role of self-efficacy in nursing interventions by providing examples of studies conducted in health promotion in patients and academic performance of nursing students.

In spite of the fact that IT outsourcing has been repeatedly proven to improve firms’ performance, few studies of the strategic importance of IT outsourcing have been undertaken in Eastern cultural contexts. To better understand IT outsourcing performance in an Eastern culture, the authors draw on the strategic orientation-performance framework as they investigate the unique capabilities of firms that determine IT outsourcing performance. The authors highlight the strategic role of client-vendor relationships, and explain that these relationships are influenced by IT outsourcing process management capacity, core competency orientation, and relationship-specific investment in IT outsourcing practices. The quality of this client-vendor relationship, in turn, affects the performance of the IT outsourcing unit. Empirically examining their research model through structural equation modeling, the authors present new insights for IT outsourcing by emphasizing the role of strategic decision making. The authors’ findings can enable client firms in Eastern cultures to improve the outcomes of their outsourcing decisions.

Abstract. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the flight-related core competencies for professional airline pilots and to structuralize them as components in a team performance framework. To achieve this, the core competency scores from a total of 2,560 OPC (Operator Proficiency Check) missions were analyzed. A principal component analysis (PCA) of pilots’ performance scores across the different competencies was conducted. Four principal components were extracted and a path analysis model was constructed on the basis of these factors. The path analysis utilizing the core competencies extracted adopted an input–process–output’ (IPO) model of team performance related directly to the activities on the flight deck. The results of the PCA and the path analysis strongly supported the proposed IPO model.
