ABSTRACT Objectives: to identify if nurses care for themselves and describe such practices. Methods: this is an integrative review of the literature published between 2006 and 2018 and indexed in the Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online and Web of Science databases. Results: the sample totaled 20 articles, grouped by content similarity in the thematic categories “limits and possibilities for the care of the self”, “knowledge about practices on the care of the self” and “implications of care of the self in professional practice”. Final considerations: the knowledge about techniques on caring for the self allows nurses to develop themselves personally and professionally. We suggest to managers and administrators a redirection of the nursing practice that contemplates the strengthening of the nurse as the manager of care and leader of the team, as well as the inclusion of the concept of care of the self in the curricula of undergraduate and graduate nursing courses.

This essay argues that the engagement with Greece and Rome after The Will to Knowledge allowed Foucault to bring clarity to his conception of limited freedom in complex societies. The Classical fulfilled this function paradoxically by being jarringly different from and integral to the discourses of modern sexuality. Foucault’s engagement with the Classical in The Use of Pleasure and The Care of the Self continued his established method of uncovering the development of a discourse, or set of discourses, over time. He thereby demonstrated the historical specificity of understandings of sexuality and the self. It follows that if the ancient self was a historical construct, then the modern self must also be such. But Foucault’s Classical engagement leads him to an innovative position in which the disciplinary dynamics of ancient self-knowledge offer a practical philosophy. Foucault’s Greek philosophy could have effects through two related mechanisms: the care of the self through askesis (discipline) and the speaking of truth to power through parresia (free speech). Through the rigors of askesis, the self can be rendered an object of analysis and hence a critical position external to the self can be achieved. Externality allows the philosopher to exercise parresia since the constraints of society have been surpassed and consequently offers a prospect of agency and a measure of freedom. The second part of the essay questions the extent of that freedom by reading Foucault against Tacitus, particularly the Agricola and the mutinies episode in the Annales. These episodes show the limitations of parresia and how parresia is bound into the workings of imperial power (and not a position external to that power). In the Tacitean model, externality is a viable political stance (achieved by Agricola), but is problematic ethically. The essay concludes by contrasting Foucauldian and Tacitean models of historical change.

This article argues that commercial weight-loss organizations appropriate and debase the askeses—practices of care of the self—that Michel Foucault theorized, increasing members’ capacities at the same time as they encourage participation in ever-tightening webs of power. Weight Watchers, for example, claims to promote self-knowledge, cultivate new capacities and pleasures, foster self-care in face of gendered exploitation, and encourage wisdom and flexibility. The hupomnemata of these organizations thus use asketic language to conceal their implication in normalization.

Objetivo: analisar a prevalência da sífilis em mulheres profissionais do sexo, a partir das evidências científicas, no período de 2011-2016. Metodologia: Revisão integrativa realizada nas bases de dados: Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature, Web of Science, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online e na Scientific Electronic Library Online, por meio do cruzamento dos descritores profissionais do sexo and mulheres and prevalência and sífilis.

Objectives: To identify in the literature the main nursing actions for prevention and treatment of the most frequent complications in intestinal elimination stomies. Methods: Integrative review that followed the phases: identification of the theme and selection of the research question; establishment of criteria for inclusion and exclusion of studies; categorization of studies; evaluation of studies included in the integrative review; interpretation of results; and synthesis of knowledge. The period used was from January 2007 to June 2017, in the databases and in the portals Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), Excerpta Medica database (Embase), Web of Science, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and Scopus Info Site. The descriptors used were ostomy, nursing and postoperative complications. Results: Eleven articles answered the guiding question: which nursing actions can be used to prevent and treat complications in intestinal ostomies? The most commonly reported complications were a parastomal hernia, stenosis, retraction of the ostomy and mucocutaneous separation. The most cited nursing actions were preoperative demarcation and follow-up with specialist nurses in the pre- and postoperative periods. Conclusion: The role of the stomatherapist nurse is essential for the prevention and treatment of complications in the intestinal ostomies, but more studies of high impact are necessary to guide their actions.

Interprofessional collaboration is essential to maximize outcomes of young children who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing (DHH). Speech-language pathologists, audiologists, educators, developmental therapists, and parents need to work together to ensure the child's hearing technology is fit appropriately to maximize performance in the various communication settings the child encounters. However, although interprofessional collaboration is a key concept in communication sciences and disorders, there is often a disconnect between what is regarded as best professional practice and the self-work needed to put true collaboration into practice. This paper offers practical tools, processes, and suggestions for service providers related to the self-awareness that is often required (yet seldom acknowledged) to create interprofessional teams with the dispositions and behaviors that enhance patient/client care.

The notion of leadership competencies is a much-debated issue. In this article, we propose that how the leader makes sense of his or her competencies is key to leadership practice. Specifically, we look at how leaders reconcile discrepancies between the self-perceived proficiency of various competencies and their corresponding importance. Empirically, we study leaders within the music domain – how choral conductors make sense of their competencies in the shaping of their professional practice. We investigated how choral leaders in Scandinavia ( N = 638) made sense of their competencies in the face of demands in their working situations. A mixed methodology was used, comprising a quantitative survey with qualitative comments and in-depth interviews with a selection of the respondents. The results show that when choral leaders shape their practice, they frequently face competency gaps that compel them to act or adjust their identity. The key to this sensemaking process is how they move competency elements they master to the foreground and wanting elements to the background. The concept of ‘sensemaking affordance’ is introduced to account for how various leader competency categories are negotiated to safeguard overall efficacy.
