ABSTRACT The Submedium São Francisco Valley is renowned for its particular conditions for cultivating grapes for different uses. The production of grapes for juice is relatively recent, and thus, knowledge is still limited on components of the production system. The aim of this study was to characterize the quality and antioxidant activity of ‘BRS Magna’ grapes in irrigated crops of the Submedium São Francisco River Valley under the influence of training systems and rootstocks, in production cycles of the first half of the year. The experiment was conducted in the Experimental Field of Bebedouro/Embrapa Semiárido, in Petrolina, Pernambuco, Brazil. The following were studied: overhead trellis, lyre, and vertical shoot positioning (VSP) systems and rootstocks ‘IAC 572’ and ‘IAC 766’, in the production cycles corresponding to the first halves of 2017 and 2018. Experimental design was in randomized blocks, with sub-subplots through time and four replicates. Overall, responses depended on training systems, rootstocks, and production cycles, which determined specific traits of the grapes. Production in the first half of 2018 was characterized by high anthocyanin contents, high total extractable polyphenols, and higher antioxidant activity, and responses were differentiated according to training system and rootstock. Plants trained to overhead trellis and grafted on ‘IAC 572’ had higher accumulation of total extractable polyphenols and antioxidant activity in berries. Plants trained to VSP had increased sugar, yellow flavonoid, and anthocyanin contents in berries while lyre training system led to higher bunch mass.

Production system and environmental factors might cause changes in grapevine physiology, affecting grape yield, quality, phenolic composition, and antioxidant potential. The aim of this study was to characterize the quality and antioxidant potential of 'Isabel Precoce' grapes on different training systems and rootstocks in warmer seasons, in tropical conditions. Experimental design was in randomized blocks, in sub-subplots through time and four replicates. Three training systems (overhead trellis, lyre and vertical shoot positioning - VSP) and two rootstocks (‘IAC 572’ and ‘IAC 766’) were studied in the production cycles from July to October, 2017 and from July to October, 2018 in the Submedium of São Francisco Valley. Berry weight; cluster weight; color attributes; berry resistance to compression (COMP); titratable acidity; soluble solids; total soluble sugars (TSS); yellow flavonoids; total anthocyanins; total extractable polyphenols and antioxidant activity by ABTS●+ and DPPH● free radical capture methods were analyzed. Lyre and VSP resulted on increases of 6% and 17% in berry weight and COMP, respectively. Moreover, differences between production cycles were more intense for both variables. In production cycle from July to October 2017, lyre and VSP systems provided increases of 2 g 100 g-1 of TSS and higher anthocyanin and yellow flavonoid contents, while grapes trained in VSP had higher antioxidant activity. Mean values of anthocyanins reached 529.34 mg 100 g-1 in grapes harvested in October 2017. Some grape quality and chemical components showed high variation in warmer seasons of sucessive years, according to training system or rootstock and their combinations

Environmental and production factors might affect grapevine physiology. Estimating these effects is essential for planning the harvest and predicting the quality of grapes. The aim of this study was to characterize the quality and antioxidant potential of ‘BRS Cora’ grapes with different training systems and rootstocks in production cycles of the second half of the year under tropical conditions. The experimental design was randomized blocks with sub-subdivided plots over time. Three training systems and two rootstocks were studied in production cycles referring to the second halves of 2017 and 2018. In 2017, the grapes of plants trained with lyre and vertical shoot positioning (VSP) had the highest soluble solids and sugars contents, and in 2018, this response occurred with the overhead trellis system. There was lower variation in titratable acidity between cycles of grapevines trained with VSP and lyre, as well as in those grafted onto ‘IAC 572’. In 2018, lyre with ‘IAC 572’ promoted higher pigment accumulation. Climatic conditions in 2017 provided a higher accumulation of polyphenols and antioxidant activity in grapes of plants trained with lyre with ‘IAC 766’. The efficiency of the training system within each cycle, associated with the effect of the rootstock, resulted in differentiated responses according to climatic conditions.

ABSTRACT Seedless table grapes cultivars have been studied in the Sub-middle region of São Francisco Valley at northeast Brazil. For that region, it is important to identify cultivars with productive potential, better quality and efficiency, minimizing the expenses in terms of inputs and workforce, when compared to traditional cultivars. Specifically, the objective of this study was to determine the influence of different rootstocks on the quality and on the antioxidant potential of BRS Clara and Arizul table grapes cultivars of two production cycles. The experimental area belongs to the Experimental Field of Bebedouro/Embrapa Semiárido, located in the sub-middle region of São Francisco Valley, in Petrolina - PE, northeast Brazil. Both BRS Clara and Arizul cultivars were analyzed individually using IAC 313, IAC 572, IAC 766, SO4, Paulsen 1103 and Harmony rootstocks, during production cycles from October/2016 to February/2017 and from March/2007 to June/2017. The experimental design was planned in randomized blocks, in a 2 (production cycle) x 6 (rootstock) factorial, with three replications each. More favorable conditions to quality for ‘BRS Clara’ grapes, as evidenced by higher berry mass, lower soluble solids (SS)/titratable acidity (TA) ratio and higher antioxidant activity, were observed after the March-June, 2017 harvest, especially from scions grafted onto IAC 572, SO4 and Harmony. The Arizul cultivar was characterized by better quality after the March-July, 2017 harvest, showing higher berry mass, lower acidity and lower SS/TA ratio and a better color mainly in SO4 and Harmony rootstocks. Therefore, an appropriate rootstock enhances the quality of the grapes.

Abstract Objectives Currently, the intake of fruits and vegetables is lower than the recommended amounts, despite the known association between consumption of plant foods and prevention of several chronic diseases. Grapes are a widely accepted and consumed fruit, and one of the richest in phytochemicals that are beneficial to human health. Previously, we reported that growing cold hardy table grapes on two different grapevine training systems, Modified Munson (MM) and Vertical Shoot Positioning (VSP), modulates their amount of total phenolics and antioxidant potential at harvest. However, consumers access to fruit is usually not immediate upon harvest, but could take weeks/months before reaching stores. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether phenolics and antioxidant potential of table grapes grown on different training systems could be maintained post-harvest in cold storage. Methods Cold-hardy table grapes variety Mars were grown on two grapevine training systems, MM and VSP. At harvest, randomly picked grape clusters from each training system were placed in clamshells (2 clusters per clamshell) and placed in cold storage (0 ± 1°C). After 1, 2 and 3 weeks post-harvest, grapes (triplicate clamshells) were homogenized and Brix, titratable acidity, antioxidant potential and total phenolics were analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using 2-way ANOVA. Results Total phenolics were greater for MM compared with VSP (MM 2.56 vs. VSP 1.84 mM Catechin equivalents; P = 0.0001), but were reduced in cold storage irrespective of training system (P = 0.0002). The MM training system had greater Brix (MM 17.9 vs. VSP 15.8°Bx; P < 0.0001) and antioxidant potential (MM 1.24 vs. VSP 1.01 mM Fe2+ Equivalents; P = 0.0379) than VSP system. The results also showed an effect of training system x time interaction (P = 0.0371) on titratable acidity. Conclusions Our data suggest that greater total phenolics, antioxidant potential and Brix associated with the MM compared with VSP training system are maintained in the post-harvest period. Our data also suggest that nutritional properties of grapes is reduced post-harvest, despite being in cold storage. Thus, grapevine training system and cold-storage play a role in producing grapes with increased health-beneficial properties. Funding Sources USDA NIFA Hatch.

The present study evaluated the influence of training systems and rootstocks on the quality of Syrah tropical wines, produced at São Francisco Valley, Brazil. For this purpose, physicochemical characteristics, phenolic composition, and antioxidant activity were assessed in wines produced with grapes grown under divided trellis system (lyre) and esparlier or vertical shoot position (VSP) training systems, grafted on IAC 572, IAC 766 and Paulsen 1103 rootsotcks and harvested at two different periods. Harvest season had the strongest influence on wine quality, followed by the rootstock. Regardless of the training system and climatic variability between the harvests, the use of the IAC 766 rootstock led to wines with higher alcohol, anthocyanins contents and color intensity. The interaction between the espalier training system and the rootstock IAC 766 resulted in higher flavonols contents, phenolic acids, and malvidin-3-O-glucoside, which was detected as the major phenolic as quantified by HPLC. This wine also presented significant levels of procyanidins A2 and B2, which showed a positive correlation with the antioxidant activity.

Background: NSAIDs are the most widely prescribed medications worldwide for their anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and analgesic effects However, their chronic use can lead to several adverse drug events including GI toxicity. The selective COX-2 inhibitors developed as gastro-sparing NSAIDs also suffer from serious adverse effects which limit their efficacy. Objective: Local generation of reactive oxygen species is implicated in NSAID-mediated gastric ulceration and their combination with H2 antagonists like famotidine reduces the risk of ulcers. The objective of this work was to design and synthesize novel methanesulphonamido isoxazole derivatives by hybridizing the structural features of NSAIDs with those of antiulcer drugs (ranitidine, famotidine, etc.) to utilize a dual combination of anti-inflammatory activity and reducing (antioxidant) potential. Method: The designing process utilized three dimensional similarity studies and utilized an isoxazole core having a potential for anti-inflammatory as well as radical scavenging antioxidant activity. The compounds were assayed for their antiinflammatory activity in established in vivo models. The in vitro antioxidant activity was assessed in potassium ferricyanide reducing power (PFRAP) assay employing ascorbic acid as the standard drug. Results: Compounds (5, 6, 9 and 10) showed anti-inflammatory activity comparable to the standard drugs and were also found to be non-ulcerogenic at the test doses. Compounds 6-10 exhibited good antioxidant effect in the concentration range of 1.0-50.0 µmol/ml. The test compounds were also found to comply with the Lipinski rule suggesting good oral absorption. Conclusion: A new series of isoxazole based compounds is being reported with good anti-inflammatory activity coupled with antioxidant potential as gastro-sparing anti-inflammatory agents.

Background: Quinoline derivatives have been attracted much attention in drug discovery and synthetic derivatives of these scaffolds present a range of pharmacological activities. Therefore, organoselenium compounds are valuable scaffolds in organic synthesis because their pharmacological activities and their use as versatile building blocks for regio-, chemio-and stereoselective reactions. Thus, the synthesis of selenium-containing quinolines has great significance, and their applicability range from simple antioxidant agents, to selective DNA-binding and photocleaving agents. Objective: In the present study we describe the synthesis and antioxidant activity in vitro of new 7-chloroN(arylselanyl)quinolin-4-amines 5 by the reaction of 4,7-dichloroquinoline 4 with (arylselanyl)-amines 3. Methods: For the synthesis of 7-chloro-N(arylselanyl)quinolin-4-amines 5, we performed the reaction of (arylselanyl)- amines 3 with 4,7-dichloroquinoline 4 in the presence of Et3N at 120 °C in a sealed tube. The antioxidant activities of the compounds 5 were evaluated by the following in vitro assays: 2,2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, 2,2-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), nitric oxide (NO) scavenging and superoxide dismutase-like activity (SOD-Like). Results: 7-Chloro-N(arylselanyl)quinolin-4-amines 5a-d has been synthesized in yields ranging from 68% to 82% by the reaction of 4,7-dichloroquinoline 4 with arylselanyl-amines 3a-d using Et3N as base, at 120 °C, in a sealed tube for 24 hours and tolerates different substituents, such as -OMe and -Cl, in the arylselanyl moiety. The obtained compounds 5a-d presented significant results with respect to the antioxidant potential, which had effect in the tests of inhibition of radical’s DPPH, ABTS+ and NO, as well as in the test that evaluates the capacity (FRAP) and in the superoxide dismutase-like activity assay (SOD-Like). It is worth mentioning that 7-chloro-N(arylselanyl)quinolin-4-amine 5b presented excellent results, demonstrating a better antioxidant capacity when compared to the others. Conclusion: According to the obtained results 7-chloro-N(arylselanyl)quinolin-4-amines 5 were synthesized in good yields by the reaction of 4,7-dichloroquinoline with arylselanyl-amines and tolerates different substituents in the arylselanyl moiety. The tested compounds presented significant antioxidant potential in the tests of inhibition of DPPH, ABTS+ and NO radicals, as well as in the FRAP and superoxide dismutase-like activity assays (SOD-Like).

Background: The genus Verbascum is well documented for its antioxidant potential but Verbascum sinaiticum is comparatively less studied plant. The current study was carried out to search for antioxidant nutraceuticals from this species. Objective: To explore the antioxidant potential of Verbascum sinaiticum and to identify its active constituents. Methods: The methanolic extract of air-dried aerial part of the Verbascum sinaiticum was partitioned with hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate. The water-soluble part of ethyl acetate afforded six phenylethanoid glycosides by repeated chromatography over Sephadex LH-20, silica gel and ODS columns. Antioxidant activity of solvent extracts and isolated constituents were evaluated by DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assays. Results: Six phenylethanoid glycosides was isolated and characterized as Verbascoside, Eukovoside, Martynoside, Jionoside D, Campneoside I and Campneoside II, from the most active fraction. Conclusion: Verbascum sinaiticum demonstrated prospective antioxidant activity. The watersoluble part of EtOAc (WSEAE) was found the most active extract whereas Verbascoside was identified as the most potent constituent. All isolated compounds exhibited significant antioxidant activity whereas their synergistic effect was found prominent in the parent fraction.

Abstract Silvopasture systems (SPS) area management option to enhance delivery of ecosystem services and diversification of income. This study evaluated productive responses of signalgrass (UrochloadecumbensStapf.) in monoculture or in SPS in the sub-humid tropical region of Brazil during six months of the rainy season. The experimental design was randomized complete block with three replications. Treatments were signalgrass + Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth. (SPS-Mimosa); signalgrass + Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) (SPS-Gliricidia); and signalgrass monoculture. Cattle were managed under continuous stocking with variable stocking rate. Response variables included herbage mass (HM), herbage accumulation (HA), stocking rate (SR), average daily gain (ADG), and gain per area (GPA). Herbage mass (HM) was greater (P < 0.0001) on signal grass monoculture (2045 kg DM/ha) than in SPS (1370 kg DM/ha, average for both SPS). Herbage accumulation rate was similar for signalgrass in monoculture and SPS-Gliricidia (avg. 61 kg DM ha-1 d-1), and both were greater than SPS-Mimosa (37 kg DM ha-1 d-1). Average daily gain was greater(P < 0.0001) for SPS-Gliricidia (1.1 kg head-1 d-1), followed by signalgrass in monoculture (0.9 kg head-1 d-1), and SPS-Mimosa (0.3 kg head-1 d-1). Stocking rate ranged from 0.6 animal units (1AU = 450-kg animal) per ha in April to 2.2 AUha-1 in June. Stocking rate and animal performance per area were similar for signalgrass in monoculture and SPS-Gliricidia, and both greater than SPS-Mimosa. Gliricidia enhanced animal performance and provided ecosystem services. Mimosa, however, reduced animal performance likely due to the competition with signalgrass. Mimosa trees, however, are an important source of income (timber used for fence posts) and that might overcome the losses in animal performance.

Introducing alternative cultivars with enhanced water use efficiencies can help alleviate pressure on groundwater for crop irrigations in Mississippi (MS) Delta. A two-year field study was conducted in 2019–2020 to compare the water use efficiencies (WUE) of recently released and pre-released soybean {Glycine max (L.) Merr.} cultivars in maturity group (MG) III (‘P37A78’, ‘LG03-4561-14’), IV (‘Dyna-gro 4516x’, ‘DS25-1, DT97-4290’), and V (‘S12-1362’, ‘S14-16306’) in the MS Delta. The experimental design was a split-plot with cultivar as the first factor and the second factor was water variant irrigation (IR) and no irrigation (RF, rainfed), replicated three times. The MG IV cultivar Dyna-gro 4516x recorded the highest grain yield and WUE: grain yields were 4.58 Mg ha−1 and 3.89 Mg ha−1 under IR and RF, respectively in 2019, and 4.74 Mg ha−1 and 4.35 Mg ha−1 in 2020. The WUE were 7.2 and 6.9 kg ha−1 mm−1, respectively, in 2019 under IR and RF, and 13.4 and 16.9 kg ha−1 mm−1 in 2020. The data reveals that ‘Dyna-gro 4516x’ (MG IV), ‘LG03-4561-14’ (MG III), and ‘P37A78’ (MG III) are best adapted to the early soybean production system (ESPS) in MS Delta region for sustainable production for conserving water resources.
