ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to analyze the growth of the Upiã tomato cultivar in the Vertical, Crossed Fence and Viçosa cultivation systems, in order to obtain explanations for the productive gains achieved in the Viçosa system. The experiment was conducted in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, from August 21st to December 5th, 2012, in the scheme of subdivided plots, being the plots represented by the cultivation systems: Vertical, using tape, 1.0×0.5 m spacing; Crossed Fence, staked with bamboo, 1.0x0.5 m spacing; and Viçosa, using tape, 2.0x0.2 m spacing. The subplots were composed by the sampling times of the plants: 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75 days after transplanting. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with four replications. Each plot was composed by three lines of 10 plants, making a total of 30 plants per plot, being evaluated the four central plants of each plot. We evaluated the dry matter of leaves (MSF), stem (MSC), inflorescences (MSI), fruits (MSFr) and total (MST). Using the foliar area index, measured by digital scanners and the previously obtained dry masses, we determined the physiological growth indices: foliar area index (IAF), specific foliar area (AFE), relative growth rate (TCR), and net assimilation rate (TAL). The Viçosa system altered the growth pattern of the tomato, quantified by the growth analysis, in comparison to Crossed and Vertical Fences. The prolongation of the second growth phase for the dry matter of fruits could possibly explain the productive gains obtained in the Viçosa system. Additional studies are required in order to clarify the relationship between the duration of the second phase of fruit dry matter growth, the physiological indexes AFE, IAF and TAL with the size and fruit yield of the tomato.

Shading screens are widely used to control excessive solar radiation, thereby changing plant growth. Thus, through physiological indices the objective was to evaluate the growth of three cultivars of minitomatoes under colored meshes. The experiment was conducted from April to July in the DTCS / UNEB experimental field in experiment DBC with subdivided plots, and four replicates, comprised of three shaded environments and the control treatment, three cultivars, and seven plant sampling seasons. For growth analysis, we used the destructive method, total dry matter was determined after drying it in an oven at 65°C. The total leaf area (LAI) was obtained using the software QUANT. Results showed that there was no interaction between environments and the other factors. Regarding leaf area index, cvs. Shani and Sweet Million stood out in all environments, whereas cv. Red Sugar had a similar behavior in all environments. Shani obtained the best indices in open sun environment and in the environment covered with red shading screen, and Sweet Million obtained the best index under gray shading screen. Red Sugar had the lowest LAI, and consequently, the lowest SLA and LAR. On the other hand, it showed the highest RPF, since it obtained the highest dry matter in leaves compared to the other cultivars. Cvs. Shani and Sweet Million showed the best: TAL, TCR, TCA and TCC.

SummaryTotal dry-matter yield of maize silage rose asymptotically as density was increased up to 17 plants/m2. Over the range 11–17 plants/m2, which is generally higher than is used in the U.K., the increase in yield was 1–1·6 t dry matter/ha which can justify the higher seed cost and although there was no adverse affect on time of maturity the risk of lodging increased at the highest density. During the harvest period whilst whole crop dry-matter percentage was rising from 23 to 28%, the ear dry-matter content rose steadily from 29 to 35%, whereas the leaf and stem dry-matter content remained essentially constant and only dried out at a later stage after a frost.Caldera 535 had a higher leaf area index and net assimilation rate than the earlier variety Julia which it outyielded by 15%. The additional yield was mainly stem tissue and the greater vegetative production caused an 11-day delay in reaching the silage stage of maturity (25% crop D.M.). NO differences occurred between density treatments and varieties in the forage quality components considered, namely percentage drymatter digestibility, modified acid-detergent fibre, crude protein and ash. Thus in U.K. conditions, total dry-matter yield exerts an overriding influence on the yields per unit area of these quality constituents. This contrasts with reports from the U.S.A. in which a reduced grain/stover ratio adversely influences silage quality.Removal of the whole ear (including husk and rachis) at an early stage in ear development resulted in a 50% reduction in the final dry-matter yield. In the earless plants, leaf area and net assimilation rate was lower, but the dry-matter content of the leaves and stem was considerably higher, and a marked purple coloration developed indicative of excess starch concentration. These results emphasize the need in maize silage not only for an adequate leaf canopy, best obtained early in the growing season by using high planting density and subsequently by using late maturing varieties, but also for sufficient sink capacity in the ear as well as in the stem fraction.

The growth of three coconut cultivars of the tall type from germination up to 17 months of age was compared by growth analysis. These cultivars differ considerably in mean nut size. Within each cultivar a comparison was also made between the growth of seedlings from small, medium, and large nuts. There were considerable differences between cultivars in seedling growth up to 2 months but these differences did not persist. Similarly differences due to nut size within cultivars were recorded at early harvests but had disappeared by 6 months. Thus neither genotype nor nut size had any sustained effect on the plant size. Consumption of endosperm depended on seed size: evidently a lower, compensating net assimilation rate occurred in plants with large nuts to give a similar total supply of assimilate. This suggests that the potential supply of assimilate was not limiting the growth rate. Large nuts transfer dry matter from the endosperm more rapidly than do smaller nuts; hence under unfavourable conditions for photosynthesis, larger nuts may produce larger seedlings. It is suggested that any seedling selection should be done in a favourable nursery environment so that emphasis is placed on differences in seedling vigour due to genetic variation.

A field study was conducted during the Rabi season of 2009-2010 in the research field of Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), Dhaka. Six levels of GA3, viz. 0, 30, 50, 70, 90 and 110 ppm were sprayed at 18 days after sowing (DAS). GA3 treatments significantly increased plant height than the control plants. GA3 with 30 to 90 ppm significantly increased number of branches and leaves, leaf area, leaf area index (LAI), leaf dry matter and total dry matter at different growth stages. GA3 at 30 to 70 ppm gradually increased crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) and relative growth rate (RGR) and declined advanced growth stages. Number of dry pods /plant, number of seeds /pod, 1000 seed weight, fresh fodder, fresh pod, dry seed yield and harvest index also significantly increased. Groundnut is grown during July to October in kharif season, however area under early kharif (sowing in May) is increasing in Andhra Pradsh, where ever irrigation facilities exists. Hence to identify suitable variety for the situation, fourteen pre release and two released groundnut genotypes were evaluated during early kharif 2013 for growth, physiological traits and yield attributes. At harvest genotypes TCGS-1375 (41.331 g plant-1), TCGS-1342(41.059 g plant-1) significantly recorded higher total dry matter compared to all other cultivars and checks followed by TCGS-1330 (36.667 g plant-1), TCGS-1349 (36.433 g plant-1). TCGS-1342 recorded significantly higher Crop Growth Rate (CGR) value of 33.848 g m-2 day-1, where as TCGS-1346 (0.1265 g dm-2 day-1) and TCGS-1330 (0.1262 g dm-2 day-1) recorded significantly higher Net Assimilation Rate (NAR) values at 45-60 DAS. Cultivar, TCGS-1330 recorded significantly higher pod yield 4210.44 Kg ha-1 compared to other entries and checks. The results revealed that pre release genotypes, TCGS-1342, TCGS-1375, TCGS-1330, TCGS-1346 recorded high physiological efficiency in terms of growth and physiological traits viz. total dry matter (TDM), crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) and leaf area index (LAI) and also recorded high pod yield.

The quantitative aspects of banana plant growth (omitting roots) at Alstonville, New South Wales, are described. Dry matter distribution, leaf area index (L), net assimilation rate (E), leaf area ratio (F) and relative growth rates (R), were measured. For a spring planting, only 1695 kg ha-l dry matter were produced in the first twelve months but 6780 kg were produced in the first half of the second year as the bunch and first ratoon crop developed. The plant crop was characterized by early leaf growth (high F) whereas in the ratoon crops, corm growth was a feature of early growth stages. Leaf area index was less than 1 for the first twelve months but reached 5 after 18 months. Plants were 3.1 m X 1.9 m apart. Net assimilation rate was affected by internal and external factors. The main internal control was the growth of suckers, which tended to increase E. Removal of the suckers in autumn or winter caused a sudden drop i i ~ E and absolute growth rate but when they were removed in early summer E was increased. The external controls affecting E were solar radiation, temperature and soil moisture, although the amount of variation explained in correlations was low. - R appeared to be constant in the plant crop within morphologically defined growth stages. This was not so in moon crops and R was probably a resultant of ontogenetic and climatic drifts. Desuckering in autumn and winter decreased R. Early summer desuckering increased R.

An experiment to study the growing pattern of a chickpea variety, IAC-Marrocos, was carried out at the Monte Alegre Experimental Station, SP, during 1987 and 1988. The dry matter production of all parts of the plant, as well the leaf area index, were weekly evaluated. Exponential quadratic models of regression were adjusted to total dry matter, leaf dry matter and leaf area index, and a linear model to dry matter of grain. Based on the growth analysis it was concluded that the chickpea is a rustic eatable plant that can be recommended as an alternative winter crop for similar climatic conditions as those of the experiment.

Single plants of Festuca arundinacea (cv. S170) were treated with gibberellic acid (GA) and the sequence of effects on the growth of the whole plant and of various organs followed by means of growth analysis. The first effect of GA was to change the distribution of dry matter between shoot and root and between tillers within the shoot without affecting total plant weight. Shoot growth was increased and resulted in a larger amount of photosynthetic tissue with a higher net assimilation rate; total plant weight increased as a consequence of these effects. The significance of these results in interpreting previous work on the effects of GA on dry matter production in grasses and other plants is discussed.

AbstractThe growth of jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis L) is affected by genetic and environmental factors.  One of the environmental factors involved is growing space. Growing space related to each plant of areas occupied is stated by the distance between plants. A Research has been conducted as long three months in dry season with average daily temperature of 25 to 31OC on altitude of 25 to 500 meter, to determine the timing of the application of cutback technology based on an analysis of growth of jack bean plants (Canavalia ensiformis L) in different growth spaces.  The research was conducted in the trial form using a randomized block design. Variables of plants growth analysis observed is leaf area index (LAI), leaf area is computed by gravimetric method; net assimilation rate (NAR), and relative growth rate (RGR) is determined based on the dry weight of plants; in all three rooms grew, namely 75 cm x 100 cm (control), 75 cm × 75 cm and 75 cm × 50 cm, each repeated three times. The result shows that the trend of leaf area index increased at net assimilation rate (g-1.cm-2.week-1) and relative growth rate (g-1.g-1.minggu-1) decreasing at the time the plant to the age 8 weeks after planting.  The best time for the application of reduction technology to jack bean plants (Canavalia ensiformis L) in all tested growing spaces, is recommended when plants are between 7 and 8 weeks after planting

A pot experiment showed that 100 and 200 ppm naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) plant height, number of leaves per plant and number of tillers per plant were found to increase due to 100 ppm NAA only in BRRI dhan-29 (V1) and varied significantly at 60 DAS. Total dry matter (TDM) was found to increase up to harvest due to both the treatments in V1, whereas, in BRRI dhan-50 (V2) also increased at 15 and 30 DAS and the variation was non-significant. There was an increasing tendency in leaf area per plant due to T1 treatment in both the varieties except at 45 DAS in V2. Significant variations were observed at 15 and 30 DAS only in V1. Relative growth rate (RGR) was maximum at early stage of growth and then declined in both the varieties. RGR was significant during 0 to15 and 45 to 60 DAS in case of V1. Net assimilation rate (NAR) was non-significantly affected and found to increase during 15 to 30 DAS following both the treatments in V1, but in V2 due to T2 treatment only.
