ABSTRACT In the sweet corn breeding, the selection of superior genotypes should consider many traits simultaneously. The best strategy to select traits simultaneously is through selection indexes. This study aimed to compare the efficiency of different selection indexes based on characteristics with direct effect on grain yield in segregating sweet corn populations. Eighteen traits were evaluated in eight sweet corn genotypes on generation F3. Data were submitted to analyses of variance and path coefficient analyses. We compared the direct and indirect selection and the following indexes: base, classical, desired gains and genotype-ideotype distance. According to path coefficient analyses, the traits which showed a direct effect about grain yield (GY) were stand, number of ears, ear diameter, number of grains per row and industrial yield, which composed the indexes. The base index provided the greatest total genetic gain, desired gains on all traits, uniform distribution of the gains and considerable gains on GY.

ABSTRACT The selection indexes aggregate information to multiple characters and, with this, they are able to carry out the selection of a set of variables simultaneously. The objective was to verify the genetic potential of agronomic traits and to select soybean F3:4 progenies based on different selection strategies. 123 progenies and the parents were sown in randomized blocks with two replications. The gains of direct selection by the indexes, the sum of “ranks” and the genotype-ideotype were lower for all characters when compared to the gains of direct and indirect selection. The rank sum index stood out for achieving the highest total gain with 37.11%. The index of the genotype-ideotype obtained a lower gain (-0.48%) for the character number of days for flowering compared to the sum index of “ranks” (-0.54%) and reached a negative gain for the attribute insertion height of the first pod with -1.82%. The genetic potential of the F3:4 population is high and allows different selection strategies to be applied to reach superior genotypes. The progenies UFU 72, UFU 116, UFU 86, UFU 45, UFU 117, UFU 56, UFU 5, UFU 106, UFU 6, UFU 4, UFU 73, UFU 101, UFU 96, UFU 90, UFU 123, UFU 116, UFU 88, UFU 65, UFU 70, UFU 3, UFU 69 and UFU 37 were selected by both selection indexes. The UFU 72, UFU 90, UFU 88 and UFU 69 progenies are agronomically superior both in direct and indirect selection, as in Mulamba and Mock (1978) sum of “ranks” selections and genotype-ideotype.

Abstract:The objective of this work was to characterize the performance of elite wheat genotypes from different Brazilian breeding programs for traits associated with grain yield and preharvest sprouting. The study was conducted in 2010 and 2011 in the municipality of Capão do Leão, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Thirty-three wheat genotypes were evaluated for traits related to preharvest sprouting and grain yield. The estimate of genetic distance was used to predict potential combinations for selection of plants with high grain yield and tolerance to preharvest sprouting. The combined analysis of sprouted grains and falling number shows that the TBIO Alvorada, TBIO Mestre, Frontana, Fundacep Raízes, Fundacep Cristalino, and BRS Guamirim genotypes are tolerant to preharvest sprouting. Combinations of TBIO Alvorada and TBIO Mestre with Fundacep Cristalino show high potential for recovering superior genotypes for high grain yield and tolerance to preharvest sprouting.

To assess correlation and to find out the direct and indirect effect of yield attributing traits on grain yield, thirty wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes were experimented at Kamalamai-04, Phant, of Sindhuli district, Nepal. The experiment was laid out in alpha-lattice design with three replications. Thirteen quantitative traits including grain yield of wheat were studied during this study. The grain yield of wheat has significant (P≤0.01) and positive genotypic and phenotypic correlation with number of spikes per meter (0.6**, 0.47**), grains per spike (0.69**, 0.65**), weight of grains per spike (0.69**, 0.61**), thousand kernel weight (0.87**, 0.74**), maturity days (0.5*, 0.47**), above ground mass yield (0.96**, 0.83**) and  harvest index (0.93**, 0.64**) of wheat. The genotypic correlation is higher in magnitude than the phenotypic correlation for almost all the studied traits. Path analysis of genotypic correlation showed a high positive direct effect of plant height (0.75), above ground biomass (0.6), spike length (0.43), and harvest index (0.29) on grain yield of wheat. Hence, for increasing yield of wheat in the breeding program, selection and hybridization can be made more effective and accurate by using those a significant positive correlation coefficient and direct effect on the grain yield of wheat.

In the final steps of a breeding program, it is necessary to evaluate several traits, which makes it difficult to select the superior genotypes. This study aimed to compare nonlinear indexes in the selection of superior soybean inbred lines obtained by recurrent selection. The experiment was carried out in Londrina, Paraná State, Brazil. During the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons, 67 soybean inbred lines and two commercial controls (BMX Potência RR and NK 7059 RR) were evaluated. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replicates. The evaluated traits were: days to maturity, agronomic value, lodging, first pod insertion height, and grain yield. A combined analysis of variance for seasons was performed and the sum of ranks index, ideotype distance index, and cultivars selection index were applied. All traits were significant for the genotypic source of variation and showed complex genotype × environment interactions. The selection indexes were consistent with each other. The ideotype and cultivar selection index showed higher concordance on indication of 15 superior inbred lines with a coefficient of coincidence of 80%. The inbred lines SR-03, SR-12, SR-22, SR-41, SR-49, SR-55, SR-61, and SR-62 were indicated for all indexes and are therefore considered superior to other inbred lines.

<p>Development of rice varieties for tidal swamp areas is emphasized on the improvement of rice yield potential in specific environment. However, grain yield is a complex trait and highly dependent on the other agronomic characters; while information related to the relationship between agronomic characters and grain yield in the breeding program particularly for tidal swamp areas is very limited. The objective of this study was to investigate relationship between agronomic characters and grain yield of rice as a basis for selection of high yielding rice varieties for tidal swamp areas. Agronomic characters and grain yield of nine advanced rice breeding lines and two rice varieties were evaluated in a series of experiments in tidal swamp areas, Karang Agung Ulu Village, Banyuasin, South Sumatra, for four cropping seasons in dry season (DS) 2005, wet season (WS) 2005/2006, DS 2006, and DS 2007. Result from path analysis revealed that the following characters had positive direct effect on grain yield, i.e. number of productive tillers per hill (p = 0.356), number of filled grains per panicle (p = 0.544), and spikelet fertility (p = 0.215). Plant height had negative direct effect (p = -0.332) on grain yield, while maturity, number of spikelets per panicle, and 1000-grain weight showed negligible effect on rice grain yield. Present study suggests that indirect selection of high yielding tidal swamp rice can be done by selecting breeding lines which have many product tive tillers, dense filled grains, and high spikelet fertility.</p>

Agricultural experiment carried out during the 2014-2015agricultural season winter wheat planting classAba99in tow sites Al-Shattra and Al-Dwayah in Al-NaseriahExplanatory farmers' fields covered by the national program for the development of the cultivation of wheat in Iraq and four treatments were applied on wheat(Laser plus weed controlling, Laser plus weed controlling plus sulfur, Laser plus weed controlling plus sulfur plus other elements, Control for comparing), in Randomized Complete Block Design RCBD with three replications, Correlations and path coefficient analysis between (number of brunches, Spike Length, number of spikes/m2, grains number per spike, thousand grain weight and plant grain yield), Results showed that grain yield  had a positive significant correlation with each of number of spikes/m2 and grains number per spike (0.711**, 0.465**) respectively.Results of path coefficient analysis showed that the direct effect of number of spikes/m2  on grain yield was high and positive(0.5350), while the indirect effectsfor each of number of brunches and number of grains  per spike and thousand grain weight on grain yield wasmedium and positive (0.2571, 0.2557, 0.2434) respectively, and also the indirect effect for grain number per spike on grain yield through number of spikes/m2 was positive and medium(0.2479). Results also showed that number of spikes/m2 had  the highest contribution in yield as a direct effect 28.621%, followed by the corporate effect of number of spikes/m2  and number of grains in spike12.674%

In plant breeding, a novel genotype-by-yield trait (GYT) biplot approach was introduced to select superior genotypes based on multiple traits. The present study demonstrated the application of the GYT biplot model to evaluate the superior wheat advanced lines from a panel of 24 genotypes to select the ideotype for end users. Results show that the genotype-by-trait (GT) biplot covered 57% of the total variation of the data to reveal that grain yield was strongly associated with 1000-grain weight and grain width. In contrast, the GYT biplot explained 90.2% of the total variation which was significantly much higher than GT biplot. According to tester vector view of GYT biplot almost all the yield trait combinations were associated with each other at different degree of association; whereas the genotypes present within the acute angles of tester vectors (yield trait combinations) had the trait profile contributed positively towards grain yield. The polygon biplot of GYT had eight sectors, out of which only three had the yield trait combinations. The eight genotypes were the polygon vertex among which the advanced line DF1906 of first sector was designated as the best genotype for spike length, number of spikelets per spike, grain weight per spike and number of grains per spike. Additionally, the DF1912 of second sector was early maturing coupled with high 1000-grain weight while DF1917 of third sector had short stature and gave the highest harvest index. The average tester coordination (ATC) biplot grouped 13 genotypes as superior and nine as inferior genotypes and recommended two advanced lines DF1912 and DF1917 as ideotype based on balanced traits profile. These findings strengthened the argument that the GYT biplot analysis is better than other selection indices and guaranteed the selection of superior genotypes and rejection of inferior ones based on multiple traits yield combinations. © 2021 Friends Science Publishers

The goal of this work was to determine the combining ability of three white oat parental genotypes (UPF 18, URS21 and URS 22) and to estimate the heterosis of F1 hybrids in two conditions, with and without water stress. The results indicate a large effect of the environment on the evaluated characters (cycle, leaf area, plant stature, grain yield per plant, main panicle weight and number of grains of the main panicle). The condition without stress was the most efficient for the selection of superior genotypes. Based on the general and specific combining ability, the cultivar URS 22 was shown to be indicated for cycle and stature reduction, while UPF 18 lead to increases in leaf area, main panicle weight and number of grains of the main panicle. The specific cross URS 22 x URS 21 was the best for the selection of superior genotypes.

A field experiment was conducted in alpha lattice design in subtropical region of Nepal in the wheat crop to determine the association between yield and yield attributing traits through correlation and path analysis. The result showed highly significant variations among the genotypes for all the traits under study. Simple correlation coefficients revealed that the association of grain yield with biological yield followed by harvest index, plant height, thousand grain weight and Area Under SPAD Retread Curve (AUSRC) at anthesis were positive and highly significant (at 1% level of significance). The positive and significant (at 5% level of significance) association of grains per spike followed by flag leaf area with grain yield was also found. Path analysis showed that biological yield and harvest index had the highest positive direct effect on grain yield. While other traits contribute to the grain yield significantly indirectly via biological yield and harvest index. This suggests that biological yield and harvest index having significant positive correlation and high direct effect on grain yield explained the true relationship and the direct selection of the genotypes through these traits is effective for improving yield potentiality.SAARC J. This research sought to determine the correlations between grain yield and yield components and to measure the direct and indirect effects of yield components on grain yield in barley by using correlation coefficient and path analysis methods, respectively. This research was conducted with ten varieties of two-rowed barley under the ecological conditions of the coastal zone of northwest Turkey during the years 2003-2004. Agronomic traits such as grain yield, plant height, spike length, kernel number per spike, kernel weight per spike, spike number per m2, harvest index and 1000-kernel weight were determined. The data from two years were combined. Correlation analyses indicated that the grain yield was positively and significantly associated with all the yield components except 1000-kernel weight. The highest correlation coefficients were found between grain yield and kernel number per spike (r = +0.406), and between grain yield and harvest index (r = +0.474). Results of path analyses indicated that harvest index had the greatest direct effect (+0.7716) on grain yield followed by spike number per m2 (+0.3359) and kernel number per spike (+0.2081). Percentages of their direct effect were 71.97%, 48.47% and 28.22%, respectively. On the other hand, most of the indirect effects of yield components on grain yield were found to be significant and positive. Because of the significant effects of the harvest index, spike number per m2 and kernel number per spike on grain yield, they may be regarded as criteria for barley improvement and breeding programs.
