Background/aims Workers engaged in vehicle spray painting are at a risk of developing respiratory problems because of the solvents in the spray paints. Changes in respiratory functions and functional capacities caused by spray painting can be improved with respiratory exercises. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of respiratory exercises on the respiratory functions, functional capacity and quality of life in vehicle spray painters. Methods A total of 70 volunteers with similar characteristics participated in the study. The groups were divided into two groups randomly (35 study group, 35 control group). Respiratory functions (value of forced expiratory volume percentage in 1 second [FEV1]), forced vital capacity percentage [FVC], FEV1/FVC percentage, peak expiratory flow percentage [PEF (%)] and maximum voluntary ventilation percentage [MVV (%)]), functional capacity (6-Minute Walk Test) and quality of life (Short Form Health Survey [SF-36]) were evaluated. The study group undertook supervised breathing exercises 3 days a week for 6 weeks. The same exercises were given to the control group as a home programme. Home programmes were followed up by telephone calls. Evaluations were performed again after 6 weeks. Results In the study group, FEV1 (%) increased more than in the control group (P<0.05). The increase in PEF (%) was similar in both groups (P>0.05). In the study group, FEV1/FVC (%) and MVV (%) were significantly different before and after the intervention (P<0.05), but there was no difference in the control group (P>0.05). There was a greater increase in the study group than in the control group (P<0.05). 6-Minute Walk Test distance (m) before and after the intervention in both groups were similar (P>0.05). Before and after the intervention, a significant difference was found in the vitality and the social function domains of the SF-36 in the study group. In the comparisons of groups, a significant difference was found in the study group in the role-emotional, social function and bodily pain domains of the SF-36 after the intervention (P<0.05). Conclusions Breathing exercises can be recommended for vehicle spray painters to avoid an increase in respiratory resistance and to improve their quality of life.

Introduction: Vasovagal syncope presents a benign prognosis in terms of survival but is associated with significant impairment on quality of life (QoL). Poor emotional status contributes to the recurrence of events. Hypothesis: Among patients with recurrent vasovagal syncope, weekly sessions of psychotherapy may improve QoL and reduce the number of events during one year of follow-up. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted including 10 patients with recurrent vasovagal syncope and positive tilt test. Cardiac disease and ongoing psychotherapeutic interventions were the main exclusion criteria. After randomization, half of the eligible patients underwent weekly sessions of psychotherapy during 12 months, while the control group was followed according to the standard of care, without psychotherapy. QoL by SF-36 and recurrence of syncope and pre-syncope were compared between the 2 groups and also in each group pre and post randomization. Results: All patients had a positive tilt test (80% with mixed vasovagal response), 70% were female and the mean age was 47.4 ± 11.1 years. The average rate of events before inclusion was 4.1 (± 3.4) syncopes/year and 1.26 (± 0.5) episodes of presyncope/week. The groups were well balanced at baseline and all patients completed the planned follow-up of one year. In the assessment of QoL by SF-36, comparing before and one year after randomization, there was no statistically significant difference in the control group (49.9 ± 9.8 vs 46.9 ± 3.4, P = 0.20) but there was a significant improvement in the intervention group (44.9 ± 11.9 vs 68.8 ± 7.8, P < 0.01). Comparing both groups at 12 months, patients that underwent sessions of psychotherapy had better QoL (68.8 ± 7.8 vs 46.9 ± 3.4, P < 0.01). Regarding the recurrence of syncope events, there was no significant change in the control group; however, in the intervention group there was a significant reduction in the rate of presyncope episodes per month (5.6 ± 2.1 vs 1.7 ± 0.9; P = 0.02) and also a significant reduction in the rate of syncope per year (4.6 ± 3.3 vs 1.0 ± 0.7; P = 0.04). Conclusions: In a randomized clinical trial, patients with recurrent vasovagal syncope undergoing regular psychotherapeutic intervention had less recurrence of events and improved quality of life in one year.

Background: The number of elderly people having physical disabilities and other chronic diseases has dramatically increased with the rapid aging of society. The importance of the care has been noticed again from the viewpoint of the prevention, and the effective care is expected for both sides to be assisted Kinästhetik/Kinaesthetics (hereinafter, referred to as Kinesthetics) and is noticed. The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between QOL and Kinsesthetics by conducting a comparative study on QOL, pain, and sensation of movement for elderly people under long-term medical treatment, and nurses and caregivers working at the same hospital and nursing homes. Methods: The subjects were elderly people, nurses and caregivers in geriatric wards of general hospitals and nursing homes in Austria, Germany, where Kinaesthetics clinical practice has been introduced the longest. We analyzed data from VSA-QOL (Visual Analog Scale for Quality of Life), SDS (Symptom Distress Scale) modified, pain (Numerical Rating Scale: NRS-Pain), Kinesthetic senses before and after assisting with movement, medical record surveys, functional evaluation BI (Barthel-Index), and Braden Scale for the elderly. SF -36 v2, pain (NRS-Pain) before and after the movement assistance, Kinesthetic senses in the movement support, problem on the health and countermeasure, and Kinaesthetics mastery situation were analyzed for nurses and caregivers. SOPMAS (Structure of the Observed Patient Movement Assistance Skill) evaluation was also carried out for both subjects. Results: The subjects were included in 115 elderly people of Kinaesthetics group, 34 Non-Kinaesthetics group, 149 nurses and caregivers of Kinaesthetics group, and 46 nurses and caregivers of Non-Kinaesthetics group. The QOL of the elderly in the Kinaesthetics group was significantly improved after 1 month (p=0.03). The eldely in the Kinaesthetics group showed a significant improvement for SDS after 1 month (p=0.01). There was a significant difference for Bowel in SDS in repeated measures analysis of variance (spherical assumption; time x group) (p=0.01). SF -36 v2 of Nurses and caregivers using Kinaesthetics showed a significant difference in the role emotional (p=0.04). The level of pain before and movement assistance (NRS) was further significantly enhanced in the Non-Kinaesthetics group. The muscle strain was significantly higher in the Non- Kinaesthetics group for both the elderly and nurses (p=0.01).Conclusion: Kinaesthetics applications enhance QOL among the elderly, nurses, and caregivers in Germany and Austria.

Abstract Background Cluster headache (CH) is a trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia (TAC) characterized by a highly disabling headache that negatively impacts quality of life and causes limitations in daily functioning as well as social functioning and family life. Since specific measures to assess the quality of life (QoL) in TACs are lacking, we recently developed and validated the cluster headache quality of life scale (CH-QoL). The sensitivity of CH-QoL to change after a medical intervention has not been evaluated yet. Methods This study aimed to test the sensitivity to change of the CH-QoL in CH. Specifically we aimed to (i) assess the sensitivity of CH-QoL to change before and following deep brain stimulation of the ventral tegmental area (VTA-DBS), (ii) evaluate the relationship of changes on CH-QoL with changes in other generic measures of quality of life, as well as indices of mood and pain. Ten consecutive CH patients completed the CH-QoL and underwent neuropsychological assessment before and after VTA-DBS. The patients were evaluated on headache frequency, severity, and load (HAL) as well as on tests of generic quality of life (Short Form-36 (SF-36)), mood (Beck Depression Inventory, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Rating Scale), and pain (McGill Pain Questionnaire, Headache Impact Test, Pain Behaviour Checklist). Results The CH-QoL total score was significantly reduced after compared to before VTA-DBS. Changes in the CH-QoL total score correlated significantly and negatively with changes in HAL, the SF-36, and positively and significantly with depression and the evaluative domain on the McGill Pain Questionnaire. Conclusions Our findings demonstrate that changes after VTA-DBS in CH-QoL total scores are associated with the reduction of frequency, duration, and severity of headache attacks after surgery. Moreover, post VTA-DBS improvement in CH-QoL scores is associated with an amelioration in quality of life assessed with generic measures, a reduction of depressive symptoms, and evaluative pain experience after VTA-DBS. These results support the sensitivity to change of the CH-QoL and further demonstrate the validity and applicability of CH-QoL as a disease specific measure of quality of life for CH.

Abstract Background The consequences of obstetric fistula on affected women are more than the medical condition. It has extensive physical, psychological, social, and economic consequences on them. Obstetric fistula affects the entire health and entire life of women. Women suffering from obstetric fistula are often abandoned by her partner, relatives, and the community. This study aimed to determine the quality of life of obstetrics fistula patients before and after surgical repair. Methods Institutional-based prospective, before and after study design was conducted in the Jimma University Medical Center from November 1, 2019–October 30, 2020. A face-to-face interview was conducted with fistula patients who visited Jimma University Medical center, fistula clinic during the study period. All fistula patients were included in the study. Accordingly, 78 women who underwent surgical repair were interviewed. The means and the standard deviation were computed using conventional statistics formulas. The unpaired t-test was used to compare two independent means, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the quality of life before repair and after a successful repair. Linear regression analysis was done for identifying determinants of quality of life. A P value of 0.05 will be considered statistical significance. Result The overall quality of life of women was 58.17 ± 7.2 before the surgical repair and 71.20 ± 10.79 after surgical repair. The result indicates there is a significant difference in the mean value of pre and post-operative (P < 0.001). The overall satisfaction of women with their health status before the surgical repair was 22.5 ± 1.30and it has increased to 53.0 ± .90after surgical repair. The physical health dimension score was 16.51 ± 5.27 before the surgical repair while it has increased to 21.77 ± 5.38 after the surgical repair. The score of the social domain before the surgical repair was 5.19 ± 1.34 and it has increased to 7.13 ± 3.67 after the surgical repair. The score of the environmental health domain was 17.41 ± 2.89 before the surgery while it also increased to 21.65 ± 4.04 after the surgical repair. The results have shown there was a significant difference in the mean values of pre and post-operatives in both social and environmental scores (P < 0.001). The score of the psychological health domain before the surgery was 19.06 ± 1.46 and it was increased to 19.84 ± 3.21 after the surgical repair. The result showed there is a significant difference in mean value pre and post-operative (P = 0.048), though it is a slight improvement compared to other domains. Conclusion The overall quality of life of the patient with fistula was improved after successful surgical repair. Although all domains of quality of life had shown significant improvement after successful surgical repair, the psychological domain showed slight improvement.

Background and Objectives: The treatment algorithm of lateral compression B2 type pelvic fractures are still under debate. Some authors advocate conservative treatment, while others recommend surgical approach. The clear indications for isolated anterior or posterior ring fixation or combined anterior-posterior pelvic ring fixation of B2 type fractures remain unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the functional outcomes and quality of life after isolated posterior pelvic ring fixation and combined anterior-posterior pelvic ring fixation for the treatment of B2 pelvic fractures. Materials and Methods: Patients aged 18 to 65 years with B2 type pelvic fracture hospitalized in a single trauma centre over a period of 3 years were included in the research. Based on the attending surgeon’s preference, patients were treated with isolated posterior or combined anterior-posterior pelvic fixation. The quality of life and pelvic function were assessed using SF-36 and Majeed questionnaires, respectively. Patients filled in the questionnaires twice: during the first hospitalization (concerning their pre-trauma state—timepoint I) and one-year after the injury (timepoint II). Results: A cohort of 32 patients with B2 type pelvic fracture was enrolled in the analysis: 23 (72%) were female and 9 (28%) were male. The mean age was 35.3 ± 11.9 years. In this cohort 13 (41%) patients underwent isolated posterior pelvic ring fixation (group I) and 19 (59%) patients underwent combined anterior-posterior pelvic ring fixation (group II). No statistically significant differences were observed between the groups in both timepoints concerning Majeed, SF-36 PCS and MCS scores. However, in both groups Majeed and SF-36 PCS scores were statistically significantly lower one year after pelvic fracture compared with pre-trauma state, while SF-36 MCS scores did not differ. Conclusions: No differences were found in quality of life and functional outcomes between isolated posterior pelvic ring fixation and combined anterior-posterior fixation for the treatment of B2 type pelvic fractures.

The aim of the research was to study the quality of life in hearing impaired patients of different age. 100 patients referred to the city audiology centre because of their hearing disorders were examined: 50 patients from 34 to 59 years old and 50 patients from 60 years and older, from which 32 patients were of older age (60 to 74 years old) and 18 of oldest age (75 to 86 years old). A degree of hearing loss was assessed according to results of pure tone audiometry. To study the quality of life all patients filled in the questionnaire MOS SF-36, which evaluates physical and psychological components of health, and the questionnaire HHIA(E)-S, designed specifically for patients with hearing disorders. The HHIA(E)-S scale was found to show high correlation with hearing loss degree in patients younger than 60 years old ( R =0,98 with statistically significant difference, p <0,05), with decreasing correlation in patients from 60 years and older ( R =0,98; no significant difference while assessing various hearing loss degrees). Considerable difficulties in this age group may be explained by the fact, that older and especially oldest patients have a challenge with hearing aids usage (or they are of low efficiency for them) and with assessing theirs difficulties on the questionnaire scales. The HHIA(E)-S scale is useful as a screening tool for early detection of hearing loss, referral of patients to an audiologist and prompt hearing aid fitting.
