New Devonian microconchids (Tentaculita) from the Holy Cross Mountains, Poland

Tentaculitoid microconchid tubeworms from Devonian (uppermost Emsian-upper Givetian) deposits of the Holy Cross Mountains, Poland, include three new species from stratigraphically well-constrained lithological units:Polonoconchus skalensisn. gen. n. sp.,Palaeoconchus sanctacrucensisn. sp. andMicroconchus vinnin. sp. The microconchids inhabited fully marine environments during transgressive pulses, as is evidenced from facies and associated fossils.Polonoconchus skalensisn. gen. n. sp. andPalaeoconchus sanctacrucensisn. sp. inhabited secondary firm- to hard-substrates in deeper-water, soft-bottom environments. They developed planispiral, completely substrate-cemented tubes and planispiral tubes with elevated apertures, which is indicative of environments where sedimentation rate is low but competition for space (by overgrowth) may be high.Microconchus vinnin. sp., on the other hand, developed a helically coiled distal portion of the tube as a response to a high sedimentation rate. As the taxonomic composition of Devonian microconchids is poorly recognized at both regional and global scales, this new material contributes significantly to our understanding of the diversity of these extinct tube-dwelling encrusters.

A taxonomic revision of the flea beetle genus <em>Diphaulacosoma</em> Jacoby, endemic to Madagascar, is provided. This genus includes seven species of which three are new to science: <em>D. elegans</em> sp. n., <em>D. jenisi</em> sp. n., and <em>D. nigroscutis</em> sp. n. An updated catalogue including new material, new faunistic records, distributions, chorotypes, and ecological notes is supplied. Lectotypes for <em>Diphaulacosoma</em> <em>laevipenne</em> Jacoby, <em>D. bicolor</em> (Weise) and <em>D. scutellare</em> (Weise) are designated. Additionally, the revision comprises a key for the identification of all seven species considered, habitus photos, and microscope and scanning electron micrographs of diagnostic characters, including aedeagus and spermatheca.

Abstract. We reconstructed the ventilation record of deep water at 2100 m depth in the mid-latitude western North Pacific over the past 25 kyr from radiocarbon measurements of coexisting planktic and benthic foraminiferal shells in sediment with a high sedimentation rate. The 14C data on fragile and robust planktic foraminiferal shells were concordant with each other, ensuring high quality of the reconstructed ventilation record. The radiocarbon activity changes were consistent with the atmospheric record, suggesting that no massive mixing of old carbon from the abyssal reservoir occurred throughout the glacial to deglacial periods.

The study is based on new material from the collections of the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre in Leiden (RNHM) and the Hungarian Natural History Museum (HNHM) and addresses issues in two genera: Epeus Peckham & Peckham, 1886 and Ptocasius Simon, 1885 from Thailand. Both genera are of Asian/Indomalayan origin, the latter with a diversity hotspot in the subtropical valleys of the Himalayas. Based on morphological data, we propose three new species of Epeus (Epeus daiqini sp. nov. (♂♀), Epeus pallidus sp. nov. (♀), Epeus szirakii sp. nov. (♀)) and two new species of Ptacasius (Ptocasius metzneri sp. nov. (♂♀) and Ptocasius sakaerat sp. nov. (♀)). Additionally, we redescribed E. tener (Simon, 1877) and added photographs of morphological characters. The genus Ptocasius is redefined due to the inclusion of 37 species, previously included in Yaginumaella Prószyński, 1979. Relationships and distribution of both genera are discussed in reference to molecular, morphological and distributional data, published by other authors in recent years.

Ampelisca species are inhabitant of soft bottom marine benthic communities of tropical to cold – temperate zones. Prior to this paper, 11 species of the genus were recognized from Brazilian coast. Three new species of Ampelisca are herein described: Ampelisca longipropoda, Ampelisca meridionalis and Ampelisca youngi. The specimens were dredged from the continental shelf of Southwestern Atlantic Ocean between the latitudes 22°06’S and 34°32’S. A key to the Ampelisca species of the Brazilian coast is provided.

To understand the processes controlling production, accumulation, and preservation of organic matter in the Lower Oxford Clay (LOC), we determined the hydrogen index (HI), the oxygen index (OI), the Tmax (from Rock-Eval), the content of total organic carbon (TOC), total carbon and total sulfur, and the carbon isotopic composition of bulk organic matter from 160 samples collected from 6 different quarries and one continuous core. With concentrations of TOC varying between 0.5% and 16.6%, the LOC is an organic-rich shale. For samples dominated by organic matter of phytoplanktonic origin, the hydrogen and oxygen indices and the Tmax (~418°) indicate low levels of maturity, and, thus, the shallow burial of the LOC through geologic time.Two main sources of organic matter can be distinguished: a major phytoplanktonic source with high HI and low OI and a minor terrestrial source with low HI and high OI. A third group, represented by samples with low HI and low OI, consists mainly of altered materials from the Middle Oxford Clay and the LOC. Selection of samples for chemical analysis was based on the macrofaunal assemblages defined by Duff (1975). These various biofacies are characterized by specific organic geochemical features indicating the relationship between conditions affecting faunal assemblages and those controlling accumulation and preservation of organic matter. For example, Duff's ‘deposit feeder shales', which are dominated by epifaunal bivalves and are depleted in infaunal organisms, exhibit the highest concentration and best preservation of marine organic matter, with an average TOC of 6.8% for 56 samples analyzed. The preservation of such organic matter requires a dysaerobic water column and a high sedimentation rate.Carbon isotopic compositions within the ‘deposit feeder shale’ biofacies (−27.6 to −23.2±) appear to have been controlled by the intensity of primary productivity. The highest-TOC, marine-dominated, 13C-rich samples reflect photosynthetic drawdown of dissolved-CO2 level, and, thus, originated in highly productive environments. On the other hand, variations in the carbon isotopic composition of organic matter in shell beds (−27.5 to −26±) probably reflect heterotrophic reworking of the organic matter, winnowing of the sediments, and mixing with a source of organic matter enriched in 13C, such as wood (δ13C from −25 to −23±). Such mixing phenomena may also explain the high variability of the carbon isotopic compositions of TOC-depleted and altered samples from the Middle and Upper Oxford Clay.The environment of deposition of the LOC would be characterized by the alternation of two major conditions: 1) periods of high productivity, dysoxic water column and high sedimentation rate leading to the development of organic-rich shales dominated by phytoplanktonic organic matter, and 2) periods of low productivity, oxic water column and high current activity implying winnowing and alteration of organic matter, and leading to the formation of shell beds where marine and terrestrial organic matter are mixed.

Four new Early Carboniferous athyridid species in three genera, including one new genus, Bruntonathyris, are described from the Qaidam Basin, northwest China: Lamellosathyris qaidamensis, Bruntonathyris amunikeensis, Bruntonathyris? heijianshanensis, and Lochengia qinghaiensis. Based on the new material and also on published information, we also reviewed the taxonomic composition and the stratigraphic and paleogeographic distributions of the three genera. As a result, Lamellosathyris is considered to be indicative of late Famennian to Viséan age, originating in late Famennian in central North America and Armenia of Russia, respectively. Later, the genus appears to have two migratory directions: one branch rapidly dispersed over Mississippi Valley, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico of central North America in Tournaisian; alternatively, another branch from Armenia migrated westerly to Belgium, France, Spain, Britain, Ireland, via the Moscow Basin and Ural seaway, eastward to the Tienshan Mountains and Qaidam Basin of northwest China during the Tournaisian to Viséan, and easterly along the southern shelves of the Paleo-Tethys to Iran and western Yunnan of southwestern China in Tournaisian. Both Bruntonathyris and Lochengia are restrictedly Tournaisian to Viséan in age, and probably originated in the Qaidam Basin. Later, Bruntonathyris migrated easterly to South China and Japan, and westerly to Urals, Moscow Basin, Donetsk Basin and Britain; Lochengia migrated easterly to South China and westerly to the Urals seaway and the adjoined Russian Platform (i.e., both the Moscow and Donetsk Basins).

The hitherto monotypic opilionid genus Fangensis Rambla, 1994 is re-evaluated from new material collected in northern, western and southern Thailand. The original description of F. leclerci Rambla (type material not traceable) was based on specimens belonging to at least three distinct species. Fangensis leclerci is thus redefined and the binomen restricted to specimens from a cave in northern Thailand only. Three new species are described, F. spelaeus, sp. nov. and F. cavernarus, sp. nov. from two caves in western Thailand and F. insulanus, sp. nov. from forests on two islands in southern Thailand. Taxonomic characters are discussed and relationships among Fangensis species and between Fangensis and other cyphophthalmids are evaluated using morphological data and ~4 Kb of molecular data from three loci, two nuclear ribosomal genes and a mitochondrial coding gene. Overall, data indicate monophyly of Stylocellidae and morphological and ribosomal data suggest monophyly of Fangensis, which is in turn divided into two clades, one composed of the three species from northern and western Thailand and the other represented by the species from southern Thailand. Observations on mating in F. leclerci are provided.
