After the regime change in Romania significant changes in the structure of the population can also be observed, one aspect of which is aging. Our research examines the Romanian aspects of the silver economy on the example of Érmellék micro region. The studied North Bihor area is a disadvantaged micro-region where the social and economic changes of the last 30 years have not brought an easier life. These social changes can be seen in ethnic change, aging, the feminization of aging, and low educational attainment. According to economic indicators, people living here are characterized by low income and commuting lifestyle for working purposes. Accession to the European Union is mostly reflected in the increase in the number of border crossings points and cross-border labor force migration in this region. Thus, our research concerns the examination of the situation of the aging and elderly generation in Érmellék along the measures and services of the silver economy. After defining the concept of the silver economy and presenting the dimensions of the Active Aging Index, an analysis of the empirical data follows. Our study interprets the silver economy as a set of economic opportunities that address both the public and consumer expenditures associated with an aging population and the specific needs of the population over 50 years. During the data processing, through qualitative approach of the elderly population quality of life, we sought the answer to the question of the extent to which the silver economy, or some of its dimensions, can be accessed in Érmellék. In our study, we integrated the analysis of information from focus group interviews, professional and in-depth interviews in the framework of the exploratory research into the dimensions provided by the Active Aging Index. Along with the applied analytical logic, the presentation of the individual dimensions was supplemented with the processing of qualitative empirical material in addition to the secondary data, so we could get to know the conditions of active aging in Érmellék and the possibilities of the regional silver economy. Keywords: silver economy, active aging, quality of life of the elderly, social care, employment of the elderly, social participation of the elderly

In order to conceptually define quality of life (QOL) in dementia, the literature on QOL in the elderly population, in chronic disease and in dementia was studied. Dementia is a progressive, age-related, chronic condition and to avoid omissions within the dementia-specific concept of QOL, a broad orientation was the preferred approach in this literature study. Adaptation is a major outcome in studies investigating interventions aimed at improving QOL in chronic conditions, but to date, it has not been used in the definition of QOL. It is argued that adaptation is an important indication of QOL in people with chronic diseases and therefore also in dementia. Some crucial issues in assessing dementia-related QOL that are relevant to clarify the continuing debate on whether QOL, particularly in dementia, can be measured at all, are discussed. Then the following conceptual definition is offered: dementia-specific QOL is the multidimensional evaluation of the person–environment system of the individual, in terms of adaptation to the perceived consequences of the dementia.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the oral health status and socio-economic conditions of the elderly, which are users of the Brazilian Unified Public Health System (SUS) and its relationship to a subjective indicator of impacts of oral conditions on quality of life (Oral Health Impact Profile OHIP-14). METHODS: It is a descriptive cross-sectional exploratory study developed in the second semester of 2011. The sample consisted of 76 elderly (65-74 years old) users of the public dental service at the Dental Specialties Center at the Faculty of Dentistry of Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. The methodological strategy adopted for data collection was the structured interview and secondary data were obtained from medical records and reports. To perform the statistical analysis it was used an exploratory analysis of multivariate data by means of STATA Software. RESULTS: The frequencies of the dimensions of the OHIP-14 with the greatest impact were pain (13.16%) and psychological distress (14.47%). The low impact association was represented by social disability (71%) and social disadvantage (63%). The gender, type of housing, necessity and prosthesis wearing were not associated with measures of quality of life related to oral health. It was observed a good correlation between the perception (r = 0.542, p <0.001), a moderate association between higher income (r = 0.28, p <0.01) and the scores of the OHIP. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the elderly which reported good self-perception of oral health and good income have expressed the perception that oral health reflects a good impact on quality of life.

Background: For aging healthy, the prevention and maintenance of oral health is essential in the general health of the individual. Objective: Thus, we sought to evaluate the elderly's perception of themselves, associating this information with their reported quality of life. Methods: This is an exploratory descriptive study with a quantitative approach. It was held in the Family Health Units in the city of João Pessoa-Paraiba-Brazil, in 2015. The Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index questionnaire was used to assess the Socio Dental Indicator. Results: Were 258 elderly, mostly female, married, who perceive their oral health positively, although they report having suffered limitations, being them physical, psychological, pain or discomfort. Conclusion: In the face of the evidence, measures are suggested to minimize the gaps, adopting more public policies aimed at the health of the elderly. These measures will ensure better conditions of service and development of projects with the aim of providing ageing with quality of life, to this age group. The results of this study may contribute to educational actions aimed at improving the care of the elderly.

The current relevance of the research. The study of the quality of life is a core issue both at the scientists’ level and the level of government workers in the world. The main goal is not only to extend lifetime, but to improve its quality too. Ukraine’s desire to enter the European Community and the European Union is impossible without substantial improvement of the quality of life. However, the quality of life depends on the quality of labor potential, and hence on the prospects for the development of the country. Since the 70s of the XXth century, the state of the quality of life has begun to attract the attention of many researchers and practitioners in various fields of researches. The Council of the European Union adopted a development strategy in 2010 – ‘Europe 2020: A Strategy for smart, stable and inclusive growth’ based on the analysis of monitoring the quality of life of the European Union. The aim was to study the students’ components of the quality of life, depending on the place of study (countries) and the origin (nationality). Methods: synthesis and analysis of the current scientific and methodological studies on self-assessment of the quality of life using the SF-36 questionnaire and the methods of mathematical statistics. Results. Analyzing the students’ answers, we revealed the regularity among indicators of the physical and mental (psychological) components of the quality of life and the sex of the respondents, the year of study, self-evaluation of their study achievements, conditions of life. Besides, the main components that play the leading roles in shaping the overall picture of the quality of life and those that reduce the quality of students’ lives were found out. Due to the analysis of the correlations between indicators of the physical and mental (psychological) components of the quality of life, the interdependent components that form the basis of the students’ quality of life were highlighted. Conclusions. The study makes it possible to compare both the generalized results of the quality of the Ukrainian and Polish students’ lives and the individual components that form the physica l and mental (psychological) basis for the quality of life.

At a first sight, the consumption of cultural goods, services, events, and activities is expected to improve significantly the individual's wellbeing and quality of life and, reciprocally, overall good quality of life should stimulate the cultural access, participation, and consumption. First evidence that things could stay differently comes from the European Union where, paradoxically, the relatively high overall quality of life does not correspond to a similar level of cultural access, participation, and consumption. Are there significant connections between the consumption of cultural goods, services, events, and activities and the overall quality of life? Does cultural consumption contribute to a sound improvement of the individual's quality of life? May cultural consumption be defined as a trait of a sustainable lifestyle? These are the main questions this paper aims to answer based on the secondary data regarding cultural access, participation, and consumption, and quality of life at the level of the European Union. Keywords: Cultural consumption, quality of life, sustainable development

Abstract: The objective of this article is to offer an introduction about the aging process, to clarify the different conceptions, theories and ages from which we can approach the analysis of aging, to study the concepts of quality of life and active aging, as well as the relation that is maintained between quality of life, active aging and lifelong learning. In this sense, we deepen the university programs for older people as a practical example of socio-educational intervention oriented to active aging. We also analyze the specific case of the Elderly’s Open Room of the Pablo de Olavide University. This program has the versatility enough to adapt to the socio-educational needs of the elderly who are protagonists of their own learning. They create spaces of learning and experiences, which foster intergenerational relationships.

BACKGROUND: One of the more prevalent conditions associated with aging is urinary incontinence (UI), which may affect up to 55% of women and 34% of men older than 65 years. As a result of increasing longevity in developed nations, the proportion of UI-susceptible individuals continues to grow, presenting clinical and economic challenges to healthcare providers. OBJECTIVE: To assist the clinician in making informed decisions regarding UI, provide information on the wider ramifications of the disease, and provide a comprehensive overview of the condition. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE (1966–December 1998) was searched for relevant publications using the following search terms: UI, UI in the elderly, treatment of UI, oxybutynin, flavoxate, vasopressin, quality of life in UI, and economic impact of UI. DATA SYNTHESIS: Key articles relating to the etiology, diagnosis, classification, economic burden, quality of life, and treatment of UI were retrieved, and this information formed the basis of the review. CONCLUSIONS: Although UI can be controlled relatively well with existing therapies, only about 50% of affected patients may actually seek care. There are a variety of therapeutic options available for the treatment of UI, although pharmacologic intervention is presently a relatively minor component of overall care; this suggests that effective drug therapy might play a more significant role in the future. The economic burden associated with the care of the incontinent patient is substantial, and in the US the direct medical cost of the disease was estimated at $25.5 billion in 1995. The disease also has a large impact on the individual UI patient, negatively affecting many parameters normally associated with a tolerable health-related quality of life.
